Measure the combined power draw of the computer or encoder, modem/ONT and router, size a UPS or inverter-and-battery system for that load and the outage duration you need, and test the complete setup. Backup power alone cannot keep a stream live if the internet path also fails.
Map what must stay on
Start with the full signal path, not just the computer. List every device needed to keep the stream going:
- The encoder or computer running the stream.
- The modem or optical network terminal (ONT), if separate.
- The router and any required network switch.
- Any audio or video hardware that must remain active.
A pre-rendered ambience video or a lower-power encoder may reduce the backed-up load, but confirm what your particular stream needs before excluding equipment. If a device loses power, the stream may stop even if the rest of the setup remains on.
Measure the load and choose a backup duration
Find the continuous power draw of each device, then add together the devices that need to run at the same time. Use measured operating draw where possible; a device’s maximum rating or a UPS’s advertised capacity does not by itself tell you how long your complete setup will run.

Decide how much outage time you want to cover before choosing equipment. Actual runtime depends on the connected load, battery capacity and condition, conversion losses, and how the backup system behaves under load. Without those details, an exact runtime cannot be promised.
- Include the modem/ONT and router in the total unless they have a separate, compatible backup supply.
- Allow for all devices that need to operate together, not only the encoder.
- Ask the supplier or installer to confirm output compatibility and expected runtime for your measured load and target duration.
Choose a UPS or inverter-and-battery arrangement
UPS for a defined, measured load
A UPS can be a practical choice when its output and battery arrangement suit the equipment and the outage window you need to cover. Check compatibility with the encoder and network devices, changeover behavior, battery details, service availability and safety certification. A router mini UPS may help power network equipment independently, but make sure its output and connectors match that equipment.

Inverter and battery for a longer backup requirement
An inverter-and-battery system may be worth considering when you need to support the combined load for longer. The right configuration depends on the actual wattage, desired runtime, equipment compatibility, battery maintenance and installation requirements. Compare those factors rather than choosing by a battery-capacity label alone.
No particular consumer model or runtime has been verified for this setup. For fixed wiring or household electrical installation work, follow applicable Indian safety requirements and use an appropriately licensed contractor under the required supervision. The Ministry of Power’s summary of Rule 10 of the Electricity (Rights of Consumers) Rules, 2020 says that “the distribution licensee shall supply 24×7 power to all consumers,” while noting specified exceptions and state or local context; that statement is not a guarantee against a particular outage at your home. Plan for internet loss as well as power loss
A powered router cannot maintain a stream if the ISP’s equipment or upstream network is unavailable. A second broadband connection or mobile-data path could provide an alternative, but whether it will work depends on coverage and service conditions at your address. Check sustained upload capacity, data limits and cost, and whether the network infrastructure remains available during local outages. The Department of Telecommunications describes ISP licensing as enabling providers to offer internet access across India; it does not establish which provider is reliable at a specific address. Test any backup route with the actual encoder and YouTube setup. Confirm how the encoder behaves when the primary connection fails and whether switching paths lets the stream recover. Do not assume that a phone hotspot or a second ISP will sustain the required upload just because it connects successfully.

Set the stream to fit the connection
Choose a resolution and bitrate that the available upload can sustain consistently. YouTube recommends leaving 20% bandwidth headroom beyond the total stream bitrate, including primary and backup streams where applicable. Its guidance warns: “A disruption on your connectivity could mean a broken stream.” YouTube Help: Streaming tips.
As one specific reference point, YouTube’s current H.264 encoder table recommends 14 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps. That is platform guidance for the listed codec and setting, not a requirement for every low-motion forest ambience stream; other codecs, resolutions and frame rates have different recommendations. If your upload is constrained, consider a lower resolution or bitrate and test it under real conditions. YouTube Help: Live encoder settings, bitrates and resolutions.

- Test stream quality before relying on the setup for a continuous broadcast.
- Monitor stream health after the stream starts and during connection changes.
- Choose settings based on measured upload capacity, leaving YouTube’s recommended headroom.
Test the outage and recovery path
- Start the stream using the encoder, network equipment and settings you intend to use.
- In a controlled test, remove mains power from the equipment connected to backup power. Verify that the encoder, modem/ONT and router stay on as required.
- Separately test the loss of the primary internet connection. If you have an alternate path, switch to it using the procedure you intend to use during a real outage.
- Check the encoder’s reconnection behavior and YouTube’s stream health. Confirm the stream recovers and remains reachable to a viewer.
- Record what failed, adjust the power or connectivity plan, and repeat the test until the full chain behaves as expected.
YouTube recommends testing and monitoring stream quality; its encoder guidance also describes testing failover with backup encoders. A test is more useful than assuming that a UPS rating or a backup network subscription guarantees continuity. YouTube Help: Streaming tips and encoder settings.
Troubleshoot common interruptions
