Set YouTube’s channel-level filters in YouTube Studio, choose participation and slow-mode controls for the individual stream in Live Control Room, and assign trusted moderators. For a continuous broadcast, schedule human handoffs if you expect chat to be watched around the clock: a 24/7 stream does not mean YouTube is staffing or continuously reviewing its chat.
Set channel-wide chat moderation in YouTube Studio
Start with the defaults that apply across your channel. In YouTube Studio, open Settings → Community moderation → Content controls.
Choose a held-message level
Under live-chat messages, select None, Basic, or Strict for potentially inappropriate messages. Basic and Strict hold messages identified by YouTube for the channel owner or a managing moderator to show or hide. If nobody acts, a held message stays hidden; it is not automatically published.
The available levels do not come with a documented universal recommendation for meditation streams or published false-positive rates. As a practical starting point, use a review level your team can manage, then adjust it in response to actual chat. YouTube cautions that “No system is perfect, but this feature can make it easier for you to moderate live chat messages on your live stream.” YouTube Help: Moderate live chat.

Add blocked words
In the same moderation settings, add recurring spam phrases, scam terms, or other language unsuitable for your channel. YouTube says messages containing or closely matching words on this list are blocked from live chat. Revisit the list as patterns change: word matching can reduce repeated spam, but it does not replace human review.
Choose who can participate in this stream
For a meditation stream intended to welcome new viewers, open chat paired with held-message review and trusted moderator coverage is a reasonable starting policy. Tighten access if observed disruption warrants it; the choice is a community decision, not a YouTube-prescribed setting.

Open chat
Open chat has the fewest participation barriers. It can suit a channel where newcomers are welcome, but gives spammers no subscription or membership hurdle.
Subscriber-only chat
Subscriber-only chat can add friction when spam is disruptive. You can require viewers to have been subscribed for a selected period. YouTube says viewers are notified of the requirement, and their subscriber status is publicly visible to other viewers when they participate.

Members-only chat
Members-only chat limits participation to channel members and therefore changes community access more substantially. Subscriber-only and members-only chat cannot be enabled at the same time. Consider the access trade-off before using either gate for a stream that is meant to be broadly welcoming.
How to slow down YouTube live chat
For a stream-specific posting delay, open the stream in YouTube Studio → Live Control Room, edit the stream, open Customization, then set the delay under Message delay. Slow mode limits how often an individual user can post. It can be used alongside subscriber-only chat.

The channel owner, moderators, and channel members are exempt from slow mode, so it does not impose the same limit on every participant. Use the smallest delay that addresses the observed pace of chat; the cited YouTube documentation does not identify one best delay for meditation streams.

Choose roles based on the access people need. Standard moderators can help clean up messages, apply timeouts, hide users, and review held messages. Managing moderators have broader in-chat controls, including participant mode, blocked words, and toggling chat, but they do not get access to YouTube Studio or Live Control Room. Write down who is covering each period, how moderators should handle borderline messages, and whom to contact when a problem needs the channel owner. If continuous human review is important, arrange coverage windows and handoffs yourself. YouTube’s moderation tools do not provide a built-in 24/7 staffing service or guarantee unattended coverage.
Review held messages and archived chat
During operation, check whether held messages are being handled as intended and update filters to reflect real chat patterns. YouTube says held messages can be shown at their original time or kept hidden; automated review may miss material. Moderation controls do not exempt a stream or its chat from Community Guidelines, and YouTube may disable live chat when those rules are violated. See YouTube Help: Moderate live chat.
Live-chat replay is on by default for stream archives, according to YouTube. You can turn it off for an individual archive. Decide whether your moderation policy and community expectations should also apply to replayed chat.
