To set up a black-screen sleep-music live stream on YouTube, enable live streaming in advance, create an encoder stream in YouTube Studio, send it a black video source and music you have the rights to use, then test the preview and connection before going live. For an overnight broadcast, check audio and stream health, and do not rely on YouTube to archive streams longer than 12 hours.
Before you set up the stream
Enable YouTube Live early
Your channel must be verified and must not have had live-stream restrictions in the preceding 90 days. First-time live-stream activation can take up to 24 hours, so enable it well before the planned broadcast. See YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance.
Confirm the music rights
You need the rights to use the music in both the live broadcast and any replay. YouTube’s Livestream terms say creators represent that they have the necessary rights for live content on Google services, including music licensing rights from artists, record labels, publishers and other rights participants. Use original music or a license that expressly covers your intended YouTube live use and archive. A “royalty-free” label, a free download, or owning the audio file does not by itself establish that the license covers this use; check its scope and attribution requirements.
Create the YouTube stream and connect your encoder

In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or schedule a stream for encoder software. Follow the stream setup prompts.

Copy the stream URL and stream key shown for that stream into the encoder’s destination or streaming settings. The stream key is a private credential: do not publish it, show it on screen, or share it with anyone who should not be able to send video to your stream.

In the encoder, create a scene with a black image or black video source and add the sleep-music file or another permitted audio input. If the audio is shorter than the broadcast, configure that source to repeat in the encoder. The exact control varies by software; confirm the audio starts again cleanly at the end of the file.
YouTube’s encoder setup guidance explains the stream connection and Live Control Room workflow. A computer running compatible streaming software is one way to send a feed; YouTube does not establish a minimum computer specification for this setup.
Choose encoder settings and test them
Start with YouTube’s baseline settings
YouTube’s recommended encoder settings list H.264 video, constant bitrate (CBR), AAC or MP3 audio, and a recommended two-second keyframe interval; the interval should not exceed four seconds. Its table lists 2 Mbps for 720p at 30 fps. That is a published baseline, not a special preset for a static black-screen image. Test the actual encoder configuration you plan to use rather than assuming any setting will suit every connection or software setup.

Allow upload headroom
YouTube recommends about 20% more upload bandwidth than the total bitrate of your stream. For example, if the configured total stream bitrate is 2 Mbps, allow about 2.4 Mbps of available upload capacity. This is a planning margin, not a guarantee of stability; other devices or changing network conditions can reduce the bandwidth available during an overnight broadcast. See YouTube’s streaming tips.
Preview before the scheduled start

Configure the stream at least two hours before the scheduled event and start the encoder at least 15 minutes before it, as YouTube advises in its encoder tips.

Open the Live Control Room preview. Confirm that the image is black, the music is audible and clean, and the stream health indicator does not show a connection problem.

Listen for silence, clipping, unexpected gaps, or a click where the music repeats. Verify that the audio source is set to loop if the track is shorter than the planned broadcast.

Go live and manage the overnight broadcast
When the preview is ready, start the event in Live Control Room unless you have enabled auto-start for the stream. During the broadcast, check stream health and confirm that audio remains present and the visual remains black. To finish, stop the stream in the encoder and end it in Live Control Room, following YouTube’s stream workflow.
Plan around the 12-hour archive limit
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. It does not promise automatic archiving for longer streams. If keeping a replay matters and the broadcast may exceed 12 hours, arrange a local recording or split the broadcast into shorter streams; do not assume a longer stream will be available as a complete replay. Live streaming is not available. Check that the channel is verified and has no live-stream restrictions in the preceding 90 days. If this is the first activation, allow up to 24 hours for it to take effect.

The encoder will not connect. Check that you copied the stream URL and matching stream key from the intended YouTube Studio stream, and that the key was not replaced or exposed. Re-enter the values in the encoder and check the Live Control Room preview.

The stream health is poor or the feed drops. Compare available upload bandwidth with the total stream bitrate and aim for YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom. Check whether other devices or applications are using the connection, then test again before the scheduled broadcast.

The screen is not black or the music stops. Check the selected scene and video source, confirm the intended audio input is active, and verify the music source’s repeat setting. Review the preview and listen through the track transition before going live.

The replay is missing or incomplete. YouTube documents automatic archiving for streams under 12 hours, not a guarantee for longer streams. For a longer broadcast, use a local recording or divide the schedule into shorter streams if preserving the archive is important.

Music receives a copyright claim or is unavailable. Recheck whether the license covers live use on YouTube and the replay, and whether required attribution has been supplied. Having an audio file or seeing it described as royalty-free is not proof of those permissions.
