1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsTo restart a podcast livestream after OBS crashes, use an external process supervisor to detect that OBS has exited and relaunch it with OBS’s --startstreaming launch parameter. OBS’s automatic reconnect can help when the stream connection drops while OBS is still open; it cannot restart an OBS process that has stopped.
Choose the recovery method for the failure
First distinguish an OBS crash from a lost connection. They need different fixes:
| What happened | Use | What it cannot do |
|---|---|---|
| OBS is still open, but the stream disconnects or drops frames | OBS’s reconnect settings and network troubleshooting | Reconnect settings cannot relaunch OBS after it exits. OBS’s connection guide identifies dropped frames and intermittent disconnections as network-path problems. |
| OBS crashes or is force-quit | An external process supervisor that relaunches OBS with --startstreaming |
The launch parameter starts streaming when OBS launches; it does not monitor for a crash or guarantee that the platform will continue the same broadcast. OBS’s launch-parameter guide |
| A media or capture source freezes while OBS stays open | Source-level recovery or troubleshooting that source | The Freeze Watchdog plugin describes restarting selected frozen, blank, or unresponsive sources—not relaunching a crashed OBS process. Plugin documentation |
| The computer loses power or restarts | Power protection and operating-system startup automation, as appropriate | A UPS by itself neither monitors OBS nor configures it to resume streaming. |
Configure OBS to start streaming on launch
OBS documents --startstreaming as a launch parameter that automatically starts streaming. Set up OBS and verify this launch behavior manually before configuring a supervisor. The parameter does not select the correct show or provide credentials for you: confirm OBS has the intended account or service, stream key, profile, scene collection, and starting scene. Keep the stream key private.
- Save and check the intended OBS setup. Open OBS and confirm the destination, stream credentials, profile, scene collection, and starting scene for the podcast broadcast.
- Launch OBS with
--startstreaming. On Windows, add the parameter to the OBS shortcut’s target; OBS’s guide explains the shortcut method. On macOS, the documented Terminal form isopen -a "OBS" --args --startstreaming. This checks that OBS launches and attempts to start streaming with your configuration. See OBS’s launch-parameter instructions. - Check the result at the destination. Confirm OBS starts the intended stream and that the platform receives it. Do not assume the parameter alone will reopen the right platform-side live event.
Windows working directory
For an automated Windows launch, OBS says to set the task’s “Start in…” working directory to the folder containing obs64.exe. The executable location depends on how OBS was installed. The launch guide describes using the OBS executable folder as the working directory; a shortcut’s launch target and a task’s working directory are separate settings.

macOS launch
OBS documents passing launch parameters through open -a "OBS" --args, including from Terminal or an Automator workflow. This passes arguments to OBS but does not watch for a later crash or restart the application.
Linux launch
The reviewed OBS launch guide does not provide a Linux systemd or other process-supervisor recipe. Use documentation for your Linux distribution and chosen supervisor to configure process monitoring; do not treat the launch parameter itself as a monitor.

Add an external supervisor to restart OBS
A supervisor is a separate operating-system service or maintained third-party process-monitoring tool. Configure it to start OBS on boot and restart OBS if its process exits unexpectedly, passing --startstreaming to the OBS launch command. OBS’s launch guide documents the argument and platform launch details, not a particular supervisor configuration.
- Set the launch command. Use the OBS executable and the
--startstreamingargument. Apply the platform-specific working-directory requirement where relevant. - Enable boot startup if required. If the computer may reboot during the podcast schedule, configure the supervisor to start OBS after the operating system starts.
- Set a delay and finite retry or backoff policy. A brief delay can avoid immediate repeated attempts; a finite policy limits a rapid restart loop if OBS cannot start or the system is unhealthy. These are safeguards, not settings prescribed by OBS.
- Prevent duplicate instances. Configure the supervisor to check for an existing OBS process before launching another. Confirm how your chosen supervisor handles a slow shutdown or a process that has not fully exited.
- Test recovery before relying on it. Run a controlled test of the complete path, including the destination platform’s response, rather than assuming the supervisor and launch argument guarantee a resumed broadcast.
Test the complete podcast broadcast recovery path
Test at a safe time, using the same OBS configuration and destination account intended for the podcast. YouTube recommends testing before a stream and monitoring stream health during it. An OBS restart does not guarantee that a live event remains active or that the platform accepts an encoder reconnect; verify the behavior for your service and account configuration. - Confirm that a normal manual stream reaches the correct destination.
- Launch OBS with
--startstreamingand confirm it starts the intended broadcast. - Simulate a controlled OBS process exit and verify that the supervisor starts only one OBS instance.
- Check whether the platform resumes the correct live event, or whether its event state requires a different action.
- Test a relaunch while the internet connection is unavailable. A restarted application cannot restore a network that is still down, and the platform may not accept the reconnect.
- After a recovery, check stream health and OBS logs. If OBS remained open and only the connection failed, investigate the network path rather than adding a crash-restart loop.
Troubleshoot common restart failures
- OBS relaunches but does not stream: Check that the supervisor passes
--startstreaming, and confirm the intended destination, credentials, profile, scene collection, and starting scene in OBS. Test the launch command manually first. - The automated Windows launch fails or behaves differently: Check that the task’s “Start in…” directory is the folder containing
obs64.exe, as OBS specifies. Also verify the executable path used by the task. - OBS opens more than once: Review the supervisor’s process detection and restart behavior. Add an existing-instance check and verify it during a controlled test.
- OBS is open but the stream is disconnected: Treat this as a connection problem, not an OBS process crash. OBS’s connection guide discusses dropped frames and intermittent disconnections in relation to the network path between the computer and remote ingest server. Check network access, ingest selection, bitrate, drivers, and firewall conditions as applicable. OBS connection troubleshooting
- A source is frozen but OBS is still running: Troubleshoot that source or consider source-level recovery. The Freeze Watchdog project claims support for selected frozen, blank, or unresponsive sources; it does not claim to restart OBS after a process crash. Its documentation reports testing with OBS Studio 32.1.1 on 64-bit Windows and Linux and cautions that compatibility with nearby versions is not guaranteed. This is the project’s claim, not an OBS endorsement. Freeze Watchdog documentation
- The platform does not resume the show: Check the service’s live-event state and test its encoder reconnect behavior. A successful OBS restart alone does not establish that the same platform-side event will continue.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your podcast uses uploaded recordings rather than a live camera, StreamNeo can keep a YouTube channel live from those videos without leaving a computer running at home. The setup is: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. StreamNeo loops the uploaded video from the cloud; it does not broadcast a camera feed.
- Nothing has to stay on at home: the stream runs in the cloud, so your computer and home connection need not remain on.
- Every quality uses one flat price per slot: videos stream as uploaded, up to 4K 60fps, without re-encoding or quality tiers.
- StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream.
- The first day is free, with no card required.
Monthly: $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo for details, or start your free day.
