OBS can send a continuous worship feed to YouTube, but a single broadcast running past 12 hours may not be archived at all, and its rewind feature may be limited or unavailable. For a stream that needs a dependable replay, plan shorter sessions and record a local copy as well. The basic setup is to enable live streaming on an eligible YouTube channel, create an encoder broadcast in YouTube Studio, connect OBS with the server URL and private stream key, then test and monitor the picture, sound, and connection.
What a 24/7 OBS stream requires
OBS is the encoder: it takes the church’s video and sound sources and sends them to YouTube. YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room creates and manages the viewer-facing broadcast. Both sides must be set up, and the operator should confirm that YouTube receives a usable preview before making the stream public.
The computer running OBS, the camera and audio sources, power, and an internet connection must remain available for the feed to continue. OBS and YouTube do not guarantee unattended operation or automatic recovery from a computer, power, or network failure. Assign someone to check the stream and decide who will respond if it stops.
Check channel eligibility
YouTube requires a verified channel with no live-streaming restriction in the preceding 90 days. YouTube’s current help page also lists a limit of 10 active streams per channel and three per stream key. Check the channel’s eligibility before building the setup; see YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility and setup guidance.

Choose a workable operating plan
Decide whether the priority is one uninterrupted viewer-facing feed or a usable YouTube replay. These goals can conflict: YouTube warns that a stream longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all, and DVR rewind can be limited or unavailable on streams longer than 12 hours. If an archive matters, schedule sessions shorter than 12 hours, plan the transition between them, and make a local recording. Test the restart or handoff with a private or unlisted broadcast before relying on it. See YouTube’s archive guidance and DVR guidance.
YouTube also documents a default live-stream resource in its API that can exist indefinitely; that API detail is not a promise that an individual broadcast will be archived indefinitely or have uninterrupted DVR. See the LiveStreams API documentation.

Set up YouTube Studio and OBS
- Enable live streaming and sign in. Confirm channel verification and eligibility, then open YouTube Studio while signed in to the church channel.
- Create or schedule an encoder stream. In YouTube Studio, open the live-stream creation flow and choose an encoder-based stream. Set its title, visibility, and schedule as appropriate for the church. Use the Live Control Room for the broadcast’s preview and stream health.
- Copy the connection details. In the stream’s settings, copy YouTube’s server URL and stream key. Treat the key like a password: anyone who obtains it may be able to send a broadcast to the channel. Do not show it on screen, include it in public instructions, or share it beyond trusted operators.
- Connect OBS. In OBS, open Settings > Stream, select YouTube as the service if available, and enter the stream key. If using a custom server option, copy the server URL and key from YouTube into the corresponding fields. Keep the key private on any computer used for the stream.
- Add the church’s existing video and sound. In the OBS scene, add the camera or capture source used by the church and the correct audio input from its sound system. Confirm that the chosen camera output and mixer output are compatible with the computer and that OBS meters respond to the intended microphones and program audio. A capture card or audio interface may be needed for a particular setup, but neither is universally required.
- Set a conservative video mode. For ordinary worship video, begin with 1080p at 30 frames per second rather than choosing 4K or a high frame rate by default. In OBS, set the canvas and output resolution and frame rate under Settings > Video. YouTube transcodes the incoming live video into viewing formats; a higher input resolution does not guarantee a better viewer experience if the connection cannot sustain it.
- Set the encoder output. Under Settings > Output, configure streaming for H.264, CBR (constant bitrate), and a two-second keyframe interval. YouTube recommends a maximum keyframe interval of four seconds. Its current guidance recommends 10 Mbps video bitrate for H.264 1080p30 and 12 Mbps for H.264 1080p60. These are platform recommendations, not a tested church configuration; choose a setting your measured connection can reliably sustain.
- Configure sound. YouTube’s current recommendation for stereo AAC is 44.1 kHz and 128 kbps. Select AAC audio in OBS and confirm that the correct audio source is active, at a clear level, without clipping or an unintended mute.
- Start a test and inspect both sides. Start the encoder from OBS and wait for the Live Control Room preview. Confirm that the picture, audio, scene framing, and stream health are acceptable before making the broadcast public or announcing it. Test with representative movement and sound rather than a silent, static scene.
YouTube recommends RTMPS for encoder connections and supports H.264, H.265, or AV1 video up to 60 fps; OBS and the computer must support the selected encoder. The H.264 figures above are a practical starting point for a common 1080p setup. See YouTube’s current encoder settings, bitrate, and resolution guidance and its encoder setup steps.
Test the connection and plan for continuous operation
A stable upload connection matters more than selecting the highest available resolution. Test the church’s actual upload path at the chosen bitrate, ideally at the time of day and from the location where the stream will run. Leave upload headroom for normal variation and other network use; a connection that barely matches the encoder bitrate can still drop frames.

- Run a test long enough to catch changes in sound, picture, and connection health, and include representative motion and audio.
- Watch OBS’s connection indicator and dropped-frames counter. OBS says an increasing dropped-frames count alongside a yellow or red connection indicator can mean the destination connection is unstable or cannot keep up with the selected bitrate.
- Check the YouTube Live Control Room preview and stream-health messages as well as the OBS window. A healthy encoder display alone does not verify that the YouTube broadcast looks and sounds right.
- Agree who checks the live picture and sound, how they will contact the person responsible, and what to do if the computer or internet connection fails. Consider backup power or internet only where it addresses a real local risk; neither prevents every outage or a YouTube interruption.
- If replay is important, confirm that local recording is running and that the church has a process for storing and checking the resulting files. Local recording is a second copy, not a substitute for confirming music permissions.
OBS’s Tools > Auto-Configuration Wizard can provide a starting point for basic settings, but it does not replace a real test of the church’s sources, internet connection, and YouTube preview. Consult the OBS Help Portal for its dropped-frame guidance and troubleshooting.
Handle worship music rights before going live
YouTube scans live streams for matches to third-party content, including copyrighted music. If it detects content that remains in the stream, the broadcast may be interrupted or terminated; a claim may also be placed on an archived live video after the broadcast ends. YouTube’s terms state that the content provider is responsible for having the necessary rights to use live content, including relevant music rights.

A church’s license does not necessarily prevent YouTube from interrupting a live stream. YouTube says the rights owner may need to add the channel to its Content ID allowlist. Before broadcasting a service or continuous worship playlist, check whether the church’s permissions cover the actual songs, arrangements, sound recordings, territories, live transmission, and replay or archive uses involved. Coverage depends on the church’s situation; these steps are not legal advice. See YouTube’s live-stream copyright guidance and its livestream terms and conditions.

Quick Recap
Troubleshoot common failures
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check or do |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube shows no incoming signal or preview. | OBS is not sending, or the server URL or stream key does not match the stream. | Check that OBS is streaming, then compare the server URL and key with the active broadcast’s settings in YouTube Studio. Keep the key private. Recheck the Live Control Room after correcting the connection. |
| OBS dropped frames increase; its connection indicator turns yellow or red. | The connection to YouTube may be unstable or unable to sustain the selected bitrate. | Test the upload path, reduce the video bitrate or output resolution, and test again. Do not raise quality until the connection sustains the lower setting reliably. See OBS’s Help Portal. |
| The picture works but worship audio is silent, distorted, or clips. | OBS may be listening to the wrong input, or the mixer level or mute state may be wrong. | Check the selected audio source and OBS meters, then verify the mixer’s output, mute state, and level with representative sound before going live. Confirm audio in YouTube’s preview as well. |
| The broadcast is live but the YouTube archive is missing or incomplete. | A stream longer than 12 hours may not be captured; an archive is not guaranteed for a continuous 24/7 broadcast. | For future broadcasts, use sessions shorter than 12 hours and run a local recording. Test the planned transition between sessions. |
| A live stream is interrupted after music begins. | YouTube may have matched third-party content, or the rights owner may not have allowlisted the channel. | Review YouTube’s copyright notice and the rights for the material. If the church has permission, contact the rights owner about Content ID allowlisting; a license alone may not prevent interruption. |
| The stream stops when nobody is at the computer. | The computer, power, network, or encoder may have stopped; an unattended OBS setup has no guaranteed automatic recovery. | Assign a monitor and response plan, check the computer and connection, and consider whether backup power or internet is appropriate. Test recovery actions before relying on them. |
