Keep the encoder’s YouTube output running and change or sequence the media feeding it; do not stop sending content from the encoder unless you intend to end the stream. For a known sequence, prepare compatible files and use FFmpeg’s concat demuxer. For manual control, use an OBS Media Source and switch sources in OBS. Neither method guarantees a gapless transition, and YouTube’s documentation does not promise that a disconnected encoder will resume the same broadcast.
What “keep the stream live” means
A YouTube live stream has an outgoing encoder connection and an upstream media source. The encoder sends a feed to YouTube using a server URL and stream key. You can change what the encoder reads while leaving that configured output running, where your software supports it. These are separate operations: replacing the media input is not the same as ending the YouTube stream.
YouTube’s encoder instructions say to stop sending content from the encoder to end the stream. They also state: “All streams under 12 hours will be automatically archived.” That archive statement does not establish what happens to a particular broadcast after an encoder disconnect or restart. The Live Streaming API likewise distinguishes a liveStream, the feed sent to YouTube, from liveBroadcast resources associated with it; that distinction is not a reconnect guarantee. Choose a source-changing method

These are alternatives for handling the input, not different YouTube output protocols. If you need to choose clips interactively, OBS is the more direct GUI approach. If the order is known in advance and files are prepared compatibly, FFmpeg’s sequential list is a better fit. Neither source documentation promises that viewers will see a seamless transition.

Option 1: Use OBS to change or loop a media source
Set up a file source
- In OBS, add a Media Source to the scene that feeds your live output. Browse to the video file. OBS documents support for formats including MP4, TS, MOV, FLV, MKV, AVI, GIF, and WebM. OBS Media Sources
- In the source properties, enable Loop if that file should restart when it reaches the end. OBS documents the default as Off; looping does not itself mean the transition is gapless.
- Configure OBS’s YouTube output with the server URL and stream key shown in YouTube Live Control Room, then start the encoder. Keep that output running when changing the upstream source. Do not use the encoder stop action if the goal is to leave the current YouTube stream open.
- To change the content manually, prepare another Media Source and switch the scene or source shown in the program output. If you replace a file on disk, use a separate source/file or otherwise verify that OBS has loaded the intended new media; the cited documentation does not establish a universally safe hot-reload procedure.
What viewers may see
Changing a source while OBS continues sending its output avoids deliberately stopping the encoder, but it is not a promise that the transition is invisible. Viewers may see a brief visual or audio discontinuity, depending on the source change and encoder behavior. Test the exact scene and file workflow privately or with an unlisted stream before relying on it for a scheduled programme.
Option 2: Use FFmpeg for a prepared sequence
FFmpeg’s concat demuxer reads a list of files and demuxes them one after another as though their packets had been joined. It is suited to a sequence decided before processing begins, rather than a general interactive playlist. The files need the same streams, codecs, and time base. The demuxer adjusts timestamps using each file’s duration, so inaccurate duration information can lead to artifacts; mismatched streams can also cause problems. Prepare and validate the list
- Place the intended clips on the server and check that they have compatible stream layouts, codecs, and time bases. Do not assume that two files with the same extension are compatible.
- Create a concat list in the sequence you want FFmpeg to read. The concat demuxer uses a text file of file entries and directives; follow its documented syntax and ensure the paths resolve from the FFmpeg process’s working environment.
- Run FFmpeg with the concat demuxer as the input and configure the output for the YouTube ingest destination and stream settings you have chosen. The appropriate output settings depend on the files and desired stream; the cited documentation does not establish one command or encoding profile that suits every case.
- Keep the FFmpeg process and its YouTube output running for the sequence. Do not treat editing the list after FFmpeg has opened it as a documented live source-switching control. To change the sequence, plan and validate the input workflow before the process starts, or use a source-control system designed for interactive switching.
FFmpeg can read regular files and network streams and write outputs. Stream copying passes compressed packets without decoding, filtering, or encoding, but it is suitable only when the input streams are compatible with the output requirements. Keep the server-to-YouTube connection distinct from the media workflow
Your server may run OBS or FFmpeg, but the software still needs a configured YouTube ingest destination and stream key. YouTube’s standard encoder setup uses a server URL and key. Keep the credentials private; anyone who obtains the stream key may be able to send content to that channel’s ingest.

HLS is a separate YouTube ingest path, not a requirement for replacing ordinary prerecorded files. YouTube describes HLS for HDR or codecs unsupported by RTMP and says it has higher latency because it sends segments rather than one continuous RTMP stream. Its HLS instructions specify TS segments of 1–4 seconds, a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments, an HLS stream key, and an encoder capable of HLS. Optional: move processing to managed cloud infrastructure
A server-side encoder can run on a remote machine rather than a home computer, but hosting is an operational choice, not a YouTube requirement. Google Cloud’s Live Stream API describes an input endpoint and a channel that transcodes live input to HLS or DASH output; that is a managed streaming category and does not establish that it is necessary or suitable for every prerecorded-file-to-YouTube workflow. Common problems and what to check
- The YouTube stream ends when you change a clip: Check that you changed the media source rather than stopping the encoder or its output. YouTube says stopping content transmission from the encoder ends the stream.
- The next FFmpeg file has glitches or timestamp problems: Check stream and codec compatibility, time bases, and duration accuracy across the files. The concat demuxer’s timestamp adjustment relies on durations.
- The new file does not appear after editing a playlist: The concat documentation describes reading a sequential list, not reliable live reloading of an already-open list. Use a planned sequence or an interactive source-control workflow instead.
- A transition is visible or audible: Neither the OBS Media Source documentation nor the FFmpeg concat documentation guarantees gapless transitions. Validate the specific media and switching method before a live programme.
- The encoder disconnects and the broadcast’s status is unclear: The cited YouTube instructions do not define a general reconnection window or guarantee that restarting an encoder resumes the exact same broadcast. Check Live Control Room before restarting, and do not promise continuity to viewers.
- HLS has more delay than expected: HLS uses segments and YouTube describes it as higher latency than RTMP. Confirm that HLS is actually needed and use its dedicated encoder and segment requirements.
