How Much RAM Does a 24/7 Nature Stream Need on a VPS?

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

There is no official, universal RAM requirement for running a 24/7 nature stream on a VPS. If the VPS only relays an already-encoded stream without decoding or re-encoding it, 2 GB of RAM is a reasonable starting point for a test—not a guaranteed minimum. Leave room for the operating system and monitoring, then measure the instance during a representative run.

If the VPS also runs OBS, builds scenes, renders browser overlays, applies filters, or transcodes video, its needs depend on that extra work. RAM is only one part of sizing: CPU or GPU capacity, network throughput, and the stream’s stability also matter.

First identify what the VPS does

Relay only: receive and forward an encoded stream

A relay-only VPS receives an already-encoded feed and forwards it to the destination. With FFmpeg stream copy, input packets are copied without decoding or encoding. That avoids the processing work of transcoding and makes a modest test instance—around 2 GB RAM—a reasonable place to start. It is an estimate for testing, not a documented minimum or a guarantee that a particular workload will run reliably.

Stream copy cannot apply frame filters. If the nature footage needs visual changes, overlays, or other frame-level processing, a simple relay may not meet the requirement. See the FFmpeg documentation for stream-copy and transcoding behavior.

Render or transcode: create or change the video on the VPS

Running OBS to compose scenes, render browser sources, or apply filters adds work beyond forwarding. Transcoding also decodes and re-encodes the video; FFmpeg describes this as computationally expensive in most cases. The actual resource demand depends on the encoder, resolution, frame rate, scene, sources, and filters. Do not assume that adding RAM alone will solve performance problems.

OBS uses GPU resources to composite and render scenes, and says that more sources, filters, browser sources, higher resolution, and higher frame rate can affect performance. Its published system requirements do not set a RAM threshold for this use case. OBS also cautions that having a compatible system does not guarantee it can stream or record successfully.

How to size and test a VPS

  1. Choose the workload. Decide whether the instance will only relay an encoded feed, or also render scenes, filter video, or transcode it.
  2. For relay-only, begin with a modest test instance. Around 2 GB RAM is a reasonable estimate to test. Keep operating-system and monitoring needs in mind; treat the result as workload-specific, not as a published minimum.
  3. For processing, test the real production setup. Use the intended codec, resolution, frame rate, sources, filters, encoder, and destination. OBS notes that CPU needs vary substantially with encoder, resolution, FPS, and scene complexity. Check whether the VPS actually exposes a suitable hardware encoder before planning to use one; OBS explains the trade-offs in its hardware encoding guide.
  4. Observe a representative run. Track peak memory, CPU, network throughput, and dropped or reconnected stream behavior. A brief launch test may not reveal problems that emerge during longer operation.
  5. Set headroom and recovery based on evidence. Keep capacity for the operating system and monitoring, and decide how the service will restart and reconnect. There is no source-backed universal memory buffer or guaranteed continuous-uptime target, so base both on observed workload and your reliability needs.

What else matters besides RAM?

CPU, GPU, and encoder availability

For stream copy, the VPS avoids decoding and encoding; for transcoding or scene work, processing capacity can become a more important constraint. Hardware encoding can shift work from the CPU to a specialized GPU component when supported, but availability depends on the instance. Verify the VPS’s actual capabilities rather than assuming it includes an accessible GPU encoder.

Network transfer and egress

A relay receives the incoming stream and sends it onward, so its network capacity and transfer allowance matter. OBS’s SRT/RIST guide advises considering roughly twice the video-stream bandwidth for a proxy’s receive-and-send traffic. That is bandwidth guidance, not a RAM estimate. Check the VPS plan’s transfer allowance and any egress charges against the intended stream and operating period. See the OBS SRT/RIST guide.

Storage and operational controls

If the VPS will retain recordings or source files, include their storage needs separately from RAM. Also compare plans for usable memory, CPU allocation and sustained performance, hardware-encoder access where needed, network transfer and egress costs, and monitoring and restart controls. These are workload-based comparison criteria, not a ranking of VPS providers.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is to keep uploaded nature footage looping on YouTube, StreamNeo is an alternative to managing a VPS: upload the video or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. The stream runs from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. Each slot streams the uploaded video at its original quality up to 4K 60fps for one flat price per slot; there are no quality tiers. StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card, and the monthly option is $9.99 per month. Troubleshooting a 24/7 stream

  • Memory rises or the process is killed: inspect peak memory during the actual workload and identify whether OBS, filters, browser sources, or other services are running. Reduce unnecessary work or test a larger instance; do not treat 2 GB as a guaranteed fit.
  • Frames drop or the output stutters: check CPU load, GPU or encoder availability, scene complexity, resolution, frame rate, and network throughput. OBS’s encoding performance troubleshooting guide covers how rendering and encoding load can affect output.
  • The relay disconnects or repeatedly reconnects: examine the feed, destination, and network path, then confirm the service’s restart and reconnect behavior. Include such events in a representative test rather than judging stability from memory usage alone.
  • Transcoding is unexpectedly expensive: verify that transcoding is necessary. If the input can be forwarded unchanged, FFmpeg stream copy avoids decode-and-encode work, but it cannot apply frame filters.
  • The VPS runs out of transfer or incurs unexpected charges: account for both incoming and outgoing traffic. A relay’s receive-and-send bandwidth requirement is separate from its RAM allocation.
