To replace the video without ending your YouTube live stream, keep OBS connected to the same live event and switch the program output to a prepared replacement source or scene. Do not click Stop Streaming in OBS or End Stream in YouTube Live Control Room. Test the exact file and transition before changing a public 24/7 feed.
What changes—and what stays connected
YouTube receives the outgoing feed from your encoder. In this workflow, OBS continues sending that feed while you change what OBS outputs. Replacing a source or switching scenes is therefore separate from ending the stream: ending it means stopping the encoder’s transmission or using YouTube’s End Stream control. See YouTube’s encoder instructions.
The steps below assume OBS is already streaming to the intended YouTube live event. The cited documentation does not guarantee that every file, computer, or encoder configuration will switch without a brief interruption, black frame, or dropped frames, so rehearse using the same setup before relying on it live.
Prepare and switch to a replacement in OBS
- Prepare the replacement before going live with it. In OBS, add the clip as a Media Source in the current scene, or make a separate scene for it. Check the image dimensions, how it fits the canvas, and whether its audio is appropriate. In the Media Source properties, set playback behavior such as looping or restarting when the source becomes active to match your plan. OBS notes that a source configured to close its file when inactive may take a short time to appear while it reloads. See the OBS Media Sources guide.
- Choose how you want to manage multiple clips. For manual, inspect-before-switching control, place each video in its own scene. For sequential or repeated playback, OBS’s VLC Video source can use a playlist with separate loop and shuffle options; VLC must be installed for that source type to be available. Confirm playlist order and behavior in a test. The same OBS guide documents these source options.
- Preview a planned scene change. If using separate scenes, enable Studio Mode in OBS. Prepare the replacement in the edit/preview area and check it before taking it to the live output with the selected transition. OBS says viewers cannot see Studio Mode itself. See the OBS overview guide.
- Switch the content, not the connection. While OBS remains connected to the same YouTube live event, switch the active scene or source. Use the intended cut or transition. Do not press Stop Streaming in OBS or End Stream in Live Control Room. The stream key does not need to be changed or published for a source replacement; treat it like a password. See YouTube’s encoder instructions and YouTube’s stream key guidance.
- Verify what viewers receive. Check YouTube’s preview and the public watch page, and listen for audio continuity. YouTube advises monitoring audio and video quality. If anything is wrong, switch back to the known-good scene or source while leaving the encoder connected. Test this recovery path before making the replacement on your public channel. If the current scene already contains a single media file, OBS media controls can restart or advance playback. For a planned replacement, separate scenes make it easier to inspect the new clip before it reaches the live output. A transition is optional; choose one that suits the production and test it first.

Choose between separate scenes and a playlist

Neither arrangement is best for every nature stream. Choose based on whether you need a manual preview, automatic sequence, or a particular transition; rehearse the exact configuration before putting it on air.
24/7 stream and archive cautions
YouTube says a live stream under 12 hours can be automatically archived, while a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. A 24/7 broadcast should not be treated as a guaranteed complete YouTube archive. If preserving the feed matters, keep a local recording and verify that it is being saved. The 12-hour threshold and archive guidance come from YouTube’s live stream archiving information; the accessed page does not state a publication year.

Changing a source does not require sharing or resetting your stream key. YouTube describes the key as the credential/address an encoder uses to send a feed. Keep it private and use OBS’s existing connection to the event.
Troubleshooting a live replacement
- The stream ended or disconnected: Check whether Stop Streaming was pressed in OBS or End Stream was selected in Live Control Room. A source switch alone is not the same operation as ending the stream. Reconnect only if necessary, and verify the correct event before sending again.
- The new clip is black or appears late: Confirm that the media file loads and that its source is visible in the active scene. If the source closes its file while inactive, allow for reload time; test the behavior before the live change.
- The picture is cropped, stretched, or the wrong size: Check the source dimensions and its fit in the scene canvas before switching. Preview the scene in Studio Mode so you can correct framing before viewers see it.
- Audio disappears, overlaps, or changes unexpectedly: Check the replacement’s audio and the other active sources in the scene. Monitor the YouTube preview and listen at the watch page during a test switch.
- A playlist plays the wrong clip or order: Review the VLC playlist order and loop or shuffle settings. Test the complete intended sequence rather than assuming the source will behave as expected.
- The image or sound breaks up during the transition: The official documentation does not establish that every encoder, computer, codec, or file will switch without dropped frames or black frames. Test with the same production configuration and use a simpler cut or prepared scene if the chosen transition is unreliable.
