Then test a direct YouTube stream, check encoder settings and upload capacity, inspect network routing, and reconnect the YouTube channel only if that destination is the isolated problem. This sequence avoids changing settings at random.
Find out which part of the stream is disconnecting
At the next drop, note the time and what each part of your setup reports. The key question is whether the source stopped sending, Restream stopped receiving it, or only the YouTube destination appears affected.
- Check whether your encoder reports a network disconnect or continues streaming.
- Check whether Restream appears to receive the source and whether its status indicates a problem with YouTube alone.
- Check whether YouTube Studio still shows an incoming stream.
- Record any error message and the time it appeared; status indicators can help narrow the cause but are not, by themselves, proof of it.
If you can, try streaming directly to YouTube without Restream. Restream recommends this test when a YouTube stream will not start. If the direct test also fails, investigate the encoder, local network, ISP, or YouTube path rather than assuming Restream is the cause. If direct streaming is stable but the Restream route is not, focus on Restream ingest, the YouTube channel connection, or the network route to Restream. Check encoder settings and bitrate
Compare your encoder output with Restream’s YouTube-specific guidance. The settings below are published recommendations, not a guarantee that your connection can sustain a given stream.

- Keyframe interval: 2 seconds recommended; 4 seconds is the stated maximum.
- Resolution and frame rate: Restream lists resolutions from 240p to 2160p and frame rates up to 60 fps.
- Bitrate: Restream’s YouTube setup guide gives an overall range of 3,000–40,000 Kbps, depending on resolution and frame rate.
Restream’s more specific YouTube bitrate recommendations are:

Restream advises keeping an encoder’s bitrate at no more than half the available upload speed. Under that rule of thumb, a 10 Mbps upload rate corresponds to a bitrate ceiling of 5 Mbps. Upload speed can fluctuate, and a single speed test does not establish that the route will remain stable throughout a broadcast. If the connection cannot sustain the target, lower bitrate or resolution and check whether the stream becomes stable. Restream’s general encoder guide gives 2,500–4,000 Kbps as a baseline for 720p/30 and 4,500–6,000 Kbps for 1080p/30; use the YouTube-specific recommendations above for platform-oriented targets and the general figures as starting points. Check network stability and routing
Rule out Wi-Fi instability
If practical, connect the streaming computer or encoder to the router over Ethernet and compare results. Restream recommends a wired connection where possible. This can help identify Wi-Fi instability, but it will not fix an ISP outage, poor upstream routing, encoder misconfiguration, or a problem at the destination. Restream’s network diagnosis guidance and mobile-streaming guidance both discuss wired connections.

Ask about firewall rules on managed networks
On an office, school, venue, or other managed network, ask its administrator to check whether security rules permit the Restream services required by your streaming mode. Restream lists *.restream.io and these ports:

Investigate route problems carefully
Restream describes traceroute as a way to inspect route hops and delays. It suggests live.restream.io for automatic server detection, or a specific Restream server hostname when applicable. If the route suggests an issue with your connection, possible next steps include asking your ISP about line or routing problems, reducing bitrate, using Ethernet, or restarting the router or modem. Asterisks in traceroute output can mean a hop did not respond; that alone does not prove that hop caused the stream to drop. Restream explains the procedure in its network troubleshooting guide.
Reconnect the YouTube destination when it is the isolated problem
If the encoder and Restream source appear stable but YouTube alone is affected, verify that Restream is connected to the intended Google account and YouTube channel. Restream’s documented recovery flow recommends removing and re-adding the channel if needed and resetting the YouTube stream key as part of reconnection.

Take care when resetting a key: if your encoder uses that key, update its credentials to match the new one before trying again. Also check how the YouTube event was created. Restream says a stream created through the YouTube mobile app cannot be used to go live through Restream because the event is locked to mobile streaming. If the connection still fails, test directly on YouTube and review the stream settings. Follow the current steps in Restream’s YouTube troubleshooting guide.
Reduce dead air while you recover
Use Disconnect Protection for a temporary fallback
Restream Disconnect Protection can show a fallback video when an RTMP or SRT source drops. Restream says it requires a Business or custom Enterprise plan, must be configured before going live, and offers fallback windows of 5, 15, or 30 minutes. If the source reconnects within the selected window, the live feed resumes; if the window expires first, the stream ends and must be restarted. It can reduce dead air, but it does not repair the source or network problem. See Restream’s Disconnect Protection instructions.
Consider a backup source for higher-stakes broadcasts
Restream also documents a backup-stream option and recommends using separate network connections for primary and backup sources to reduce the chance that one connection failure takes both offline. A backup adds setup and operational complexity, so it may be unnecessary for a casual stream. It provides resilience, not a fix for the primary source’s underlying fault.
