They are not strictly competing choices: OBS can encode the stream while Restream distributes it. Neither tool’s cited documentation guarantees uninterrupted broadcasting, and a continuous stream is not the same as a complete replay archive.
Restream and OBS do different jobs
OBS: production and encoding
OBS is streaming software that encodes and sends your broadcast to a platform such as YouTube. If YouTube is the only destination, a direct OBS-to-YouTube workflow avoids adding a distribution service you may not need. Restream: distribution and service workflows
Restream describes its multistreaming service as accepting a live feed from software such as OBS and distributing it to multiple platforms. It also documents its browser-based Studio and scheduling prerecorded video as live. Those are different workflows; the existence of prerecorded scheduling does not establish that a particular plan supports an indefinite continuous loop. Restream and its Help Center describe these options.
You can use OBS with Restream: OBS remains the encoder and Restream handles distribution. For a single ordinary landscape YouTube broadcast, Restream’s documented option to send landscape and portrait as separate YouTube live events through its OBS plugin is specialized, not a requirement. Restream’s YouTube setup also says you must own the channel to add it; being a manager or editor is not enough. Restream: Stream to YouTube.

Which setup should you choose?

Set up OBS directly for a YouTube stream
This is the do-it-yourself route for a YouTube-only broadcast. YouTube’s interface labels can change, so use the current Live Control Room and OBS controls shown in your installed versions rather than relying on an older tutorial’s screenshots.
- Enable YouTube Live early. Restream’s YouTube setup page says first-time streaming requires phone verification and a 24-hour activation wait. Complete this before your intended start time. Confirm that you own and can access the channel.
- Create or select the YouTube live stream. In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room, configure the stream, and obtain its stream key. Treat the key like a password: do not publish it or include it in a recording. If it is exposed, replace or reset it in YouTube before going live again.
- Connect OBS to YouTube. In OBS, open Settings → Stream, select YouTube as the service when available, and connect the account or choose the stream-key method. If using a key, copy it from YouTube into OBS without sharing it. Verify the destination and stream settings before starting.
- Configure the source and output. Add the video, scene, or other content you intend to broadcast. Set output resolution and bitrate to values your connection and YouTube ingest can sustain. Use a wired Ethernet connection where practical; OBS warns Wi-Fi may be unstable. There is no bitrate value established here that fits every resolution, frame rate, encoder, connection, or YouTube limit.
- Check the connection before committing to a long session. Start a test stream, monitor OBS for dropped frames, and confirm in YouTube’s Live Control Room that the picture and audio arrive as intended. OBS says dropped frames can indicate an unstable connection to the ingest server or a bitrate higher than the connection can sustain.
- Keep the system operational. A direct OBS broadcast depends on the computer, OBS process, network, router, and power remaining available. Monitor the stream and have a way to respond to interruptions. A wired cable can reduce Wi-Fi-related instability, but cannot prevent an ISP outage, platform interruption, router or power failure, or computer failure.
Keep bitrate and network stability in perspective
OBS troubleshooting guidance says that 75% of total upload speed is a starting point for setting bitrate, not a universal target or a guarantee. Real capacity can vary, and other traffic competes for bandwidth. If OBS reports dropped frames, lower the bitrate and retest; also check whether the connection to the selected ingest server is stable. OBS recommends wired networking because Wi-Fi may be unstable. A Cat6 Ethernet cable is an optional way to connect a computer to a router where wired networking is practical; it is not a 24/7 reliability guarantee. It cannot remedy failures elsewhere in the chain.
Plan separately for continuity and replay
A continuous signal can still be interrupted
Restream says it has no stream-duration limit, but warns that its server may undergo maintenance and restart when a stream runs continuously for more than 24 hours. Its guidance suggests restarting every 24 hours to prevent potential issues. This is a vendor operational caveat, not evidence that every stream will be interrupted or that a daily restart prevents every outage. Restream: How long can I stream for?

For a 24/7 broadcast, decide who will monitor it and how you will recover from a local computer, network, power, service, or platform interruption. The cited documentation does not establish a failover guarantee for either OBS or Restream.
A full-day broadcast is not one guaranteed replay
YouTube’s official encoder help says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Restream’s YouTube setup page gives the same under-12-hour archive qualification. Do not assume a continuous 24/7 signal will produce one complete saved replay; uninterrupted delivery and replay availability are separate requirements. YouTube Help: Live stream with an encoder.

Troubleshooting common 24/7 problems
- OBS shows dropped frames: Check connection stability and whether bitrate exceeds sustainable upload capacity. Lower bitrate and retest; OBS’s 75% upload-speed figure is a starting point only.
- Wi-Fi interruptions: Where practical, connect the computer to the router with Ethernet. This addresses only the local wireless link, not outages elsewhere.
- YouTube does not accept the first live stream: Check that Live is enabled, complete phone verification, and allow the 24-hour first-time activation period stated on Restream’s setup page.
- Restream cannot add the YouTube channel: Its setup instructions require channel ownership, not manager or editor access.
- A stream runs beyond a day on Restream: Account for its warning that maintenance may restart a server after more than 24 continuous hours; its suggested daily restart is operational guidance, not an uptime guarantee.
- You need a full replay of a 24-hour broadcast: YouTube’s cited automatic archive guidance applies to streams under 12 hours. Do not rely on that rule to promise one complete archive of a longer continuous stream.
- The stream stops despite a wired connection: Check the computer, OBS process, router, ISP, power, destination service, and YouTube status; Ethernet cannot eliminate those failure points.

Copyright and channel-policy checks
Having permission to broadcast every video, song, image, and other element matters whether you use OBS, Restream, or a cloud loop. A stream being prerecorded or continuously repeated does not itself establish that the content is cleared or that a channel meets YouTube’s monetization requirements. Review the rights for the material and YouTube’s current policies before scheduling or starting a long-running broadcast.
