To run a 24/7 YouTube music stream with one still image, create a YouTube Live event and send it a video feed from an encoder: the image supplies the picture and your music supplies the audio. For a do-it-yourself setup, the encoder and computer must stay online and stable. Before you start, confirm that you have the necessary rights to broadcast the music. Also plan for replay: YouTube says streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all.
What you need before you start
- A YouTube channel eligible for live streaming. YouTube requires channel verification and no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. First-time enablement may take up to 24 hours, so enable it ahead of your planned broadcast. YouTube says streamers must be at least 16 years old. See Get started with live streaming and Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
- A computer running a software encoder, such as OBS, or a hardware encoder. YouTube documents both encoder-based workflows; a particular device or minimum computer specification is not established in its guidance.
- A still image you are allowed to use, an audio source containing music you are allowed to broadcast, and a reliable internet connection with enough upload capacity for your chosen video settings.
- A local recording plan if you want a backup of the broadcast or a replay that YouTube might not retain.
Set up the YouTube Live event
- In YouTube Studio, open Go Live and create or schedule a live stream. If this is your first stream, complete channel verification and live-stream enablement well before the event.
- Use the event’s encoder workflow to obtain its stream URL and stream key. Enter them in your encoder’s streaming settings. Treat the key like a password: anyone who has it may be able to send a feed to your event. YouTube’s encoder setup is described in Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
- Choose the event’s visibility and schedule deliberately. Use a private or unlisted rehearsal first if you want to check the setup without making the broadcast public.
Build the picture-and-music feed
In your encoder, add the static artwork as the video source and route the licensed music into the audio source. Arrange the image to fill the frame at the resolution you intend to send, and check that it is legible and not stretched or cropped unexpectedly. The precise method for holding a still image on screen or routing audio depends on the encoder and operating system; it is an implementation choice, not a YouTube feature guarantee.
Set the audio to play continuously for the planned session. Before going live, check that it is audible, not clipping, and does not stop when a track ends or a playlist advances. If you are using music playback software alongside an encoder, test how the two behave when the computer locks, sleeps, or changes audio devices. Disable sleep and automatic restarts that would interrupt a broadcast, while keeping the system secure and monitored.
Choose stable encoder settings
YouTube’s published recommendations are a practical starting point, not settings tested specifically for a static image. For H.264, YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR), a two-second keyframe interval, and RTMPS for secure ingestion. Do not set a keyframe interval above four seconds. Its recommended H.264 bitrates include these frame-size and frame-rate combinations:

| Output | YouTube recommended H.264 bitrate |
|---|---|
| 720p at 30 fps | 3 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 5 Mbps |
YouTube’s encoder settings and bitrate guidance is at Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions. Choose a resolution appropriate for the artwork and connection, and make sure available upload capacity can sustain the encoder’s output. These bitrate figures are recommendations for the stated H.264 modes, not a guarantee of stream quality on a particular connection. YouTube lists AAC or MP3 for audio encoding.
Test, go live, and keep the setup running
- Run a speed test and confirm that the upload connection is stable. A speed-test result is only a snapshot; it does not guarantee uninterrupted service.
- Start the encoder and check the YouTube Live Control Room preview and stream-health messages. Confirm the image appears correctly, listen for the music, and verify that levels are steady.
- If you plan to keep a local archive, start recording and confirm that the file is being written. A local recording is a backup only if the computer has enough storage and remains operational.
- When the rehearsal checks pass, start the scheduled or public event using YouTube’s Live Control Room prompts. Monitor stream health and audio/video output during the broadcast.
- Keep the computer powered, connected, and awake, and keep the encoder and audio source running. A computer-based setup depends on local power, internet, operating-system stability, and the encoder staying active; YouTube does not guarantee unattended operation.
Plan around YouTube archives and DVR
A continuous 24-hour event is not the same as a channel being available around the clock. YouTube says a live stream longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all and recommends a local archive backup. Its archive guidance is at Archive live streams. If preserving YouTube replays matters, schedule shorter events rather than relying on one event to cover the full day. Reconnecting between events requires a workflow you choose and test.

Long broadcasts also have a DVR limitation: viewers may not be able to rewind through the full stream, and DVR availability or rewind range may be reduced for streams longer than 12 hours. Do not promise viewers they can rewind to the beginning of a continuous broadcast. See Use live chat and live stream DVR.
Clear the music rights before broadcasting
You are responsible for securing the rights needed for your live content, including music licensing rights from artists, record labels, publishers, and other rights participants. Buying a track, crediting the artist, or seeing it described as “free” does not by itself establish permission for a live broadcast. Check that the license covers the intended use and territory; the status of an individual track depends on its actual license.

YouTube scans live streams for third-party content. If it detects a match, it may replace the stream with a placeholder image, interrupt it, or terminate it if the content remains. If you have permission to use third-party music, YouTube advises asking the rights owner to allowlist your channel through Content ID; licensed music can still trigger an interruption if the channel is not allowlisted. Read Livestream terms and conditions for YouTube’s rights terms and matching guidance.
Choose a setup that fits your continuity needs
| Approach | What it involves | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Computer with software encoder | Send the image-and-music feed from software such as OBS using the YouTube event’s stream URL and key. | Uses hardware you may already own, but depends on that computer, connection, and encoder staying active. |
| Hardware encoder | Send the feed through a dedicated encoder device configured for the event. | Can suit a dedicated broadcast workflow, but is not required for a still image and music. |
| Cloud service | Upload prerecorded videos and have a service send them to YouTube continuously. | Can avoid leaving a home computer running; check service terms and capabilities against your needs. |
YouTube’s encoder guide lists software and hardware options and describes Gyre as a cloud-based option for continuous streams of prerecorded video; its current pricing and terms are not established here. See Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.

Troubleshoot common problems
- YouTube does not show an incoming feed: Check that the event is open, the encoder has the matching stream URL and key, and the key has not been changed. Keep the key private.
- The preview buffers or stream health reports problems: Check connection stability and upload capacity, then reduce resolution or bitrate to a setting the connection can sustain. Re-test before restarting the public event.
- The image is missing, cropped, or stretched: Check that the image source is active and its dimensions and placement match the encoder’s output canvas.
- There is no music or it stops: Check the encoder’s selected audio input, system playback routing, and whether the playlist or player has reached its end. Listen to the Live Control Room preview.
- YouTube interrupts or replaces the broadcast: Review the Live Control Room notice and resolve any third-party-content match. If the music is licensed, contact the rights owner about Content ID allowlisting; permission alone does not ensure the channel has been allowlisted.
- The replay is missing or incomplete: A stream over 12 hours may not be captured. Use shorter events when YouTube replay retention matters and maintain a verified local recording if a backup is needed.
