If a YouTube stream’s sound stops, first check whether the picture also stalls. If both stop, compare another internet connection and device; if the picture continues silently, note whether the fault affects one stream or several before changing settings. Those checks help distinguish a viewer-side playback problem from an issue with one live stream, but they do not by themselves identify the cause.
First identify what is stopping
Before changing settings, compare the symptom in a few simple ways:
- Picture and sound both stop or buffer: investigate playback, device, and connection.
- Picture continues but sound stops: note whether it happens on one stream or on multiple streams. The general YouTube playback guidance does not offer a specific audio-track repair for this symptom.
- Only one stream is affected: try that stream on another supported device or connection, and compare it with another YouTube stream.
- Several viewers report the same interruption on one live stream: the operator should check the stream’s health and outgoing feed. This is a reason to investigate the source stream, not proof of a particular fault.
YouTube says network congestion and other factors can cause live programming issues or delays, even when the connection seems good. That makes connection and stream checks worthwhile, but it does not establish that congestion, YouTube, a cloud host, or an Indian ISP caused a particular interruption. YouTube’s playback troubleshooting guidance covers different steps for computers, mobile devices, and TVs.
Try viewer-side fixes for your device
On a computer
- Try another internet connection and replay the stream. For example, compare Wi-Fi with mobile data if available.
- Close and reopen the browser. Check for computer and browser updates, and reduce the number of open tabs.
- Restart the computer and try again. YouTube also suggests trying Chrome.
- If your device supports a wired connection, using it can be a useful comparison with Wi-Fi. YouTube’s guidance is to try another connection; it does not promise that Ethernet will fix an audio dropout.
On a phone or tablet
- Switch between Wi-Fi and mobile data, then replay the stream.
- If you are using an app other than YouTube, try the YouTube app or youtube.com.
- If playback buffers or loads poorly in the YouTube app, clear the app cache and try again.
These are general playback steps, not instructions for repairing a particular audio track.

On a TV
- Check the internet connection and playback quality.
- Close and reopen the YouTube app, then sign out and back in.
- Restart the TV or streaming device and check for system software updates.
- Test the stream on another supported device to see whether the symptom follows the stream or stays with the TV.
If the issue appears to be in the live stream
When the sound drops only on one live stream—or several viewers report the same problem at the same time—the stream operator should inspect YouTube Live Control Room and the encoder’s outgoing stream. Ordinary viewers should not change encoder settings to address a suspected ingestion problem.
YouTube’s Live Streaming API health documentation describes ingestion warnings that include keyframes arriving too infrequently, multiple audio streams when only one is allowed, and insufficient video delivery. These checks apply to the stream being sent to YouTube; they are not diagnoses of an individual viewer’s playback problem.

When the problem persists
Gather details before reporting the issue: the device and operating system, YouTube app or browser and version, the affected stream link and time, whether the picture continues when sound stops, and whether other streams, devices, or connections work. In the YouTube app, send playback feedback through Profile > Help and feedback > Send feedback. If other services also fail on the device, YouTube advises consulting the device manufacturer’s support site.
What is—and is not—specific to India
The available guidance does not establish an India-specific cause, statistic, outage, or playback rule for this symptom. A Google India Blog announcement dated 12 March 2026 said YouTube Premium Lite background play and downloads were beginning to roll out to subscribers in India. That announcement concerns subscription features, not a fix for interrupted audio on a cloud-hosted stream: YouTube Premium Lite gets background play and downloads.
