Yes—OBS can run on a remote server and send a continuous broadcast to YouTube. The server must provide the graphics and display environment OBS needs, enough sustained encoding capacity for your scenes and output settings, and reliable network egress. YouTube’s RTMPS stream URL and a private stream key connect OBS to your channel. A running encoder does not guarantee a single YouTube archive for a broadcast longer than 12 hours.
Before you start: confirm YouTube live access
Your channel must be verified and must not have had a live-streaming restriction in the prior 90 days. YouTube’s current eligibility guidance is at Get started with live streaming. In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or schedule an encoder stream so you can retrieve its connection details.
Choose a remote host that can actually run OBS
A VPS or dedicated server is a hosting option, not proof that OBS will run adequately on it. OBS’s Linux requirements include OpenGL 3.3-compatible graphics and an X window system or Wayland. OBS cautions that meeting minimum system requirements does not guarantee capacity for a particular stream; encoder choice, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity all affect workload. See the OBS system requirements and Linux installation guidance.
Compare remote and locally controlled machines
| Consideration | Remote VPS or dedicated server | Home or office machine |
|---|---|---|
| Graphics and display | Confirm the service provides graphics compatible with OBS and a usable X11 or Wayland session. | Confirm the machine and its graphics drivers meet OBS requirements and remain available to the session. |
| Sustained encoding | Check the specific host’s capabilities against your resolution, frame rate, encoder, and scene workload; test before relying on it. | Check the computer’s sustained encoding performance with the actual OBS scene and output settings. |
| Network | Verify stable outbound capacity and any egress charges with the provider. | Verify stable upload capacity and account for interruptions to the local connection. |
| Administration and recovery | Plan secure remote administration, process recovery, and alerts. | Plan for power, network, and application recovery when nobody is present. |
| Recording and storage | Determine where local recordings will be stored and how they will be retrieved or retained. | Confirm adequate local disk space and a separate backup if the recording matters. |
There is no universal server size or provider plan established for this workflow. The right host depends on your scene, codec, resolution, frame rate, and network needs. A provider-authored Vultr guide to an Ubuntu streaming server is an example, not a performance guarantee or a recommendation of a specific plan.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Install OBS for your chosen Linux distribution
Use the OBS installation instructions for the distribution and version on your host. Exact package commands differ by OS release, so do not copy an installation command intended for a different release. Make sure the host has the required graphics support and display session before configuring OBS.
Connect OBS to YouTube with RTMPS
- Create the stream in YouTube Studio: Open Live Control Room and create or schedule an encoder stream. Find the current stream URL and stream key in its stream settings.
- Open OBS settings: In OBS, open Settings > Stream. Choose the built-in YouTube RTMPS service if it is available, or select a custom service and enter the current RTMPS URL shown in Live Control Room.
- Add the stream key: Copy the key from YouTube into OBS’s stream-key field, then save. OBS’s service list includes
rtmps://a.rtmps.youtube.com:443/live2, but use the URL YouTube currently supplies for your stream as authoritative. YouTube recommends RTMPS, which encrypts the connection using TLS/SSL; see YouTube’s RTMPS guidance and OBS’s YouTube streaming guidance.
Treat the stream key as a credential: YouTube describes stream keys as similar to a password and address. Do not put it in public configuration, logs, screenshots, or source control. If it is exposed, replace or reset it in YouTube Studio and update OBS.

Set video and audio output for the stream
In OBS, open Settings > Output and Settings > Video to configure the encoder and output. YouTube’s standard RTMP/RTMPS recommendations support H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1, up to 60 fps. The platform recommends constant bitrate (CBR) and a 2-second keyframe interval, with no more than 4 seconds. Its current encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions table gives bitrate recommendations by output resolution and frame rate.
- Choose an output resolution and frame rate your host can encode continuously, rather than assuming the highest option is best.
- Set the video bitrate according to YouTube’s table for that output and confirm the host’s stable upload capacity can sustain it.
- Use CBR and set the keyframe interval to 2 seconds.
- Select a supported audio codec and configure audio to suit the source material and the current YouTube settings guidance.
- If you need HDR, consult YouTube’s separate HDR requirements; they have different codec and device constraints from a basic SDR setup.
There is no single correct bitrate without knowing the resolution, frame rate, codec, and reliable outbound bandwidth. A bitrate that exceeds the connection’s sustained capacity can make the stream unstable.

Test the full path before leaving it unattended
- Start OBS and check that YouTube Live Control Room receives the encoder signal and shows a preview.
- Play the stream as a viewer and verify both picture and audio, including any scene changes or media that should loop.
- If you need an independent recording, enable OBS recording and verify that the file is created and continues to grow on the host.
- Monitor the stream during a representative run. YouTube recommends checking audio and video rather than treating a successful start as proof that everything is healthy; see its live streaming tips.
- Test how you will regain access, restart OBS if needed, and receive an alert if the encoder or broadcast stops.
Plan for long-running broadcasts and archives
“Nonstop” can mean OBS keeps sending an encoder feed; it does not mean YouTube will preserve one uninterrupted replay. YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, but warns, “If your stream exceeds 12 hours, it may not be captured at all.” Very long broadcasts can also have limited or unavailable DVR rewind. See YouTube’s live-stream archive guidance and DVR guidance.
If a durable recording is important, do not rely on a single broadcast longer than 12 hours as your only copy. Arrange local recording and verify the file, or plan archive-friendly segments. For a long-running setup, keep the host powered, protect the stream key, monitor network and stream health, and have a recovery path. These operational measures reduce avoidable risk; they do not guarantee uninterrupted service.

Common problems and what to check
- OBS has no usable preview or display on the server: Verify compatible graphics support and an active X11 or Wayland environment. A headless or very small instance should not be assumed suitable without testing.
- YouTube does not receive the stream: Check that the current stream URL and key match the selected YouTube stream, that OBS is using RTMPS, and that the host can reach the destination over the network. Replace an exposed or outdated key.
- Stream health is poor or video drops: Compare the configured bitrate with YouTube’s recommendation for your output and confirm sustained outbound capacity. Reduce the output workload if the host or connection cannot maintain it.
- Audio is missing or incorrect: Confirm the intended OBS audio source is active, the selected output audio codec is supported, and audio is audible in the Live Control Room preview and viewer playback.
- The broadcast is live but no replay appears: Check the broadcast duration. YouTube may not capture streams exceeding 12 hours; use an independent recording if an archive is essential.
- The process stops while nobody is watching the host: Check host power and network availability, configure process recovery and alerting, and test those recovery measures before depending on them.
