Check YouTube’s Live Streaming API first: for the stream bound to your broadcast, liveStream.status.streamStatus set to active means YouTube reports receiving data from your encoder. Then check the stream’s health, the broadcast’s separate live status, the VPS encoder and public playback. No single check proves all four are working.
What each check can—and cannot—tell you

The API’s stream resource describes the incoming audio-video feed; the broadcast resource describes the event viewers watch. YouTube’s overview of broadcasts and streams explains the distinction.
Check YouTube’s receipt and health states
Use the Live Streaming API with the Google Account that owns the channel. Retrieve the liveStream bound to the broadcast, then inspect its status fields. YouTube’s LiveStreams resource reference documents the states and health fields.
Interpret streamStatus
active: YouTube reports that it is receiving data through this stream. This is the clearest API-level check that the VPS is sending data that reaches YouTube.inactive: YouTube reports it is not receiving data through the stream. Check the VPS encoder, its destination and stream key, and the network path.error: Investigate the reported error and the encoder’s configuration or connection.ready: The stream has valid CDN settings; this does not mean video is currently arriving.created: The stream resource exists, but this state alone does not establish that an active feed is reaching YouTube.
Interpret healthStatus and configuration issues
goodmeans there are no configuration issues at warning severity or worse.okmeans there are no error-severity configuration issues; warning-level issues may still exist.badmeans the stream has error-severity issues.noDatameans YouTube’s live streaming backend has no health information. It is inconclusive about whether the encoder has stopped.
When present, inspect configurationIssues for each issue’s type, severity, reason and description. Treat health as a separate signal from receipt: active can coexist with a health warning or error.

Check whether the broadcast itself is live
An active incoming feed and a live public broadcast are different states. If YouTube reports the bound stream as active but viewers cannot watch, inspect the liveBroadcast.status. The broadcast may still need a manual transition to live, may be configured for auto-start, or may be in a transition.
YouTube says broadcast transitions typically take 5–10 seconds and can take up to a minute. Poll the broadcast status while a transition completes rather than treating the first non-live response as a definitive failure. Its Life of a Broadcast guide describes the lifecycle and recommends confirming that the bound stream is active before transitioning a broadcast.

Run the checks in order
- Identify the correct broadcast and bound stream. In the API, use the channel owner’s authorized Google Account and identify the stream bound to the broadcast you mean to check. A channel may have more than one stream or broadcast resource.
- Read
liveStream.status.streamStatus. If it isactive, YouTube reports receiving encoder data. If it isinactiveorerror, move to the VPS and connection checks below. Do not interpretreadyas a live feed. - Read
liveStream.status.healthStatusandconfigurationIssues. Note the overall health value and any issue severity and description.noDatais not proof of a stopped encoder. - Read
liveBroadcast.status. If the feed is active but the broadcast is not live, determine whether a manual transition is required, auto-start is expected, or a transition is still in progress. Allow time for the transition and poll again. - Check the VPS encoder independently. Confirm that the expected encoder process exists and that its output or logs have recent timestamps. The exact process check depends on your operating system and encoder; a running process alone does not prove YouTube is receiving data.
- Check the public broadcast independently. Open it as a viewer and confirm it plays and appears current. API receipt confirms data reached YouTube, not that the visible content is changing or that playback works for every viewer.
Access limits and alternatives
Live Streaming API requests must be authorized by the Google Account that owns the broadcasting channel. If you do not have that access, ask an authorized channel operator to check the API or current YouTube Studio live control room. The exact Studio interface steps can vary; the API fields above provide the specific receipt and health signals described here. YouTube documents account authorization in its Live Streaming API overview.
The YouTube Data API’s Videos resource also documents liveStreamingDetails metadata, but the receipt check in this workflow is the bound stream’s status.streamStatus.

Troubleshoot by symptom
YouTube reports inactive or error
- Confirm the VPS encoder process is present and producing recent output.
- Check that the encoder is targeting the intended YouTube ingest destination and using the stream key associated with the bound stream.
- Check the VPS network path and any encoder or YouTube error details available to you.
- Recheck
streamStatusafter correcting a problem; a process restart by itself is not confirmation that YouTube is receiving data.
YouTube reports active, but viewers cannot watch
- Inspect the separate
liveBroadcast.statusand determine whether the event needs a manual transition or is still transitioning. - Allow for the transition interval and poll the broadcast status again.
- Open the public broadcast and check playback independently.
YouTube reports active, but the picture looks frozen
- Compare the public image over time and check whether it appears current.
- Inspect recent encoder output on the VPS to see whether it is still producing output.
- Do not treat
activeas proof of visually changing frames: it establishes data receipt, not that the image content is fresh.
Health is noData or there are configuration warnings
- For
noData, rely on the receipt state and independent VPS and playback checks; the health value alone is inconclusive. - For reported configuration issues, read the severity and description. A warning is not the same as an error, and
okonly rules out error-severity configuration issues.
