Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsUse two separate safeguards: FFmpeg’s FIFO muxer can retry a failed network output while FFmpeg is still running; a process supervisor can relaunch FFmpeg after it exits. Neither can restore a failed video source, power, internet connection, invalid stream key, or YouTube service. For a locally hosted stream, configure both layers, then test and check the result in YouTube Live Control Room.
Know which failure you are trying to recover from
“Restart FFmpeg” can mean two different things. If the process is alive but its RTMP output has dropped, FFmpeg’s FIFO muxer has recovery options for retrying network output. If FFmpeg has exited, an external supervisor must start it again. A supervisor does not repair an output connection inside a still-running process, and FIFO recovery does not relaunch an exited process.
| Failure | Relevant safeguard | What it cannot do |
|---|---|---|
| Temporary network-output failure while FFmpeg remains alive | FIFO muxer recovery options | Restore an unavailable source or network |
| FFmpeg exits unexpectedly | Operating-system process supervisor | Guarantee that the restarted stream is healthy |
| Host reboots | Supervisor configured to start at boot | Keep the host powered or connected |
| Local power or internet is unavailable | A UPS may help with brief local power interruptions, depending on load and capacity | A UPS does not fix internet, software, or YouTube outages |
The official sources cited here provide general FFmpeg and YouTube guidance, not India-specific ISP reliability, power-outage figures, or carrier comparisons. A suitable upload speed depends on your chosen stream settings and measured connection.
Set up FFmpeg output recovery
Check the FFmpeg build you will run
Before relying on FIFO options, check that the installed FFmpeg binary supports them. FFmpeg’s online documentation is regenerated as versions change, so verify syntax and behavior against your installed version using its local documentation or help output. The current FIFO documentation describes attempt_recovery, recovery_wait_time, recover_any_error, and max_recovery_attempts. Read the FFmpeg FIFO muxer documentation.

ffmpeg -re -i INPUT -f fifo -fifo_format flv -drop_pkts_on_overflow 1 -attempt_recovery 1 -recovery_wait_time 1 rtmp://DESTINATION
The example uses real-time input processing, FIFO output in FLV format, packet dropping when the FIFO queue overflows, recovery attempts, and a one-second recovery wait. FFmpeg describes this approach as continuing to process in real time through a temporary network outage while attempting to recover output. It is illustrative documentation, not a tested production command for your particular YouTube stream. See FFmpeg’s RTMP FIFO recovery example.
Choose retry and queue behavior for your source and your tolerance for packet loss or delay. Do not assume a recovery message means viewers are receiving a healthy picture and sound; verify the stream in YouTube Live Control Room and on its watch page.

Configure a supervisor to relaunch an exited process
FIFO recovery only operates while FFmpeg is alive. To restart the command after a crash or other exit, configure a service manager for your operating system to start it at boot and restart it after an unexpected exit. Set a sensible restart delay and retain logs so you can distinguish repeated crashes from successful recovery.
Service-manager syntax and the conditions under which a process is restarted vary by operating system and configuration. Verify the appropriate service manager’s current manual for your host rather than copying a generic unit file or assuming one setting covers every exit condition. Check that the command’s input files and configuration are available when the service starts, and that secrets such as the stream key are not exposed in logs.

Connect FFmpeg to YouTube and choose stream settings
- Get the connection details: In YouTube Live Control Room, create or open the stream and provide the YouTube server URL and stream key to your encoder. Keep the key private. Follow YouTube’s current encoder setup instructions.
- Choose a profile for your actual connection: YouTube’s current encoder guidance covers RTMP/RTMPS, H.264, H.265, or AV1 video, and constant bitrate (CBR). Select resolution, frame rate, and bitrate using its current tables and your measured outbound capacity, not a copied preset that may exceed your connection. See YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrate, and resolution guidance.
- Set keyframes: YouTube recommends a two-second keyframe frequency and says not to exceed four seconds. Confirm that your encoder output meets the current recommendation.
- Leave bandwidth headroom: YouTube recommends keeping total streaming bitrate within available upload bandwidth with 20% headroom. If you use primary and backup streams, account for both streams as well as the recommended headroom. This is general YouTube guidance, not an India-specific guarantee. Review YouTube’s streaming tips.
- Check stream controls: YouTube’s live settings include latency choices and Auto-start/Auto-stop options. Lower latency can increase playback buffering; Auto-start/Auto-stop can start or stop streaming through the encoder when enabled. Confirm the options and their behavior in your current stream configuration: Manage live stream settings.
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That statement does not guarantee that one continuous 24/7 event will remain uninterrupted or retain indefinite event continuity. Plan to monitor the live event rather than treating archiving as a recovery mechanism.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Test recovery before depending on it
- Start the stream with a representative source and check picture, sound, and status in Live Control Room.
- Test a temporary output interruption while FFmpeg remains alive. Review FFmpeg logs to see whether FIFO recovery is attempted and whether output resumes.
- Separately stop the FFmpeg process unexpectedly. Confirm that the supervisor relaunches it and that the new process can read its input and access the stream configuration.
- Reboot the host and confirm the service starts at boot.
- After each test, verify stream health in Live Control Room and on the watch page. A process marked active is not proof that viewers are receiving a healthy feed.
Do these tests before leaving a stream unattended. They reveal different failure paths; passing one does not prove the others work.

Troubleshoot the symptom, not just the process status
| Symptom | Likely area to check | Useful next step |
|---|---|---|
| FFmpeg is running, but output dropped | RTMP destination, outbound connection, and FIFO recovery logs | Check recovery options and test the network path; confirm status in Live Control Room. |
| FFmpeg exited and did not return | Supervisor configuration, restart conditions, and service logs | Check why the process exited and whether the service manager is configured to start and relaunch it. |
| FFmpeg restarted, but there is no healthy stream | Input availability, stream URL or key, and current YouTube stream status | Inspect encoder errors and credentials, then verify the feed in Live Control Room. |
| Encoder reports healthy output, but viewers see problems | Outbound internet connection or YouTube-side stream health | Test the outbound connection and use YouTube’s live stream troubleshooting guidance. |
| Encoder output itself looks poor | Source quality, encoder errors, or CPU load | Check the input, encoder logs, and host load; compare the result with YouTube’s stream-health information. |
| Host is off or cannot reach the internet | Power, host availability, or network service | Restore local power or connectivity. FFmpeg recovery and process supervision cannot make an unavailable host or network available. |
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is a loop of uploaded videos on YouTube rather than a live camera or a live FFmpeg input, StreamNeo is a cloud alternative: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops uploaded videos from the cloud, so no computer or home connection has to stay on. It supports the video as uploaded up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, with no re-encode or quality tiers, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream.
The first day is free with no card, one free day per account. The monthly option is $9.99 per month. The service is for YouTube and uploaded videos; it does not go live from a camera. Start your free StreamNeo day.
