Sometimes, but not automatically. Viewer location can affect advertising prices because advertisers target different geographies and competition varies between ad markets. But “outside India” is not one market, and YouTube does not publish a universal India-versus-other-countries rate comparison. Whether a live viewer generates revenue also depends on whether an ad is served, the ad format, and other factors.
How viewer location can affect YouTube ad revenue
Advertisers can target audiences by geography, and YouTube says competition in the ad market differs by location. As a result, CPM can vary with viewer geography. That explains why changing a stream’s audience mix may change its ad results; it does not establish that every country outside India has higher ad prices than India, or that a viewer in any particular country will earn more.
“Outside India” covers many distinct advertising markets. A channel’s results depend on its actual audience and ad delivery, not a single worldwide rate for non-Indian viewers. CPM, RPM, and the figures that matter
CPM and RPM answer different questions. YouTube defines CPM as advertiser cost per 1,000 ad impressions, before YouTube’s revenue share. It is not the creator’s take-home rate. RPM is creator revenue per 1,000 views after revenue share and includes multiple revenue sources, not just ads. Because RPM uses all views as its denominator, it is not a pure measure of ad price.

- Viewer geography: where viewers are located; ad-market competition can vary by location.
- Ad impression: an individual ad shown. It is not the same as a view of the stream.
- Monetized playback: a video playback that included an ad. It is not interchangeable with an ad impression.
- CPM: advertiser cost per 1,000 ad impressions before the creator’s revenue share.
- RPM: creator revenue per 1,000 views after revenue share, including more than advertising.
These distinctions matter when comparing audiences: a higher CPM does not by itself tell you what the creator earned per view or per stream. YouTube Help: YouTube partner earnings overview
Why some live viewers may not see an ad
A stream can have monetization enabled without serving an ad to every viewer. YouTube says ad availability, advertiser targeting, viewer geography, recent ad exposure, and whether a viewer has Premium can affect whether an ad appears. YouTube also cautions that live ad slots are not guaranteed to serve. That means a location-based revenue comparison should account for ad delivery as well as ad prices. If one group of viewers receives fewer ads, total revenue may differ even if advertiser prices are higher in that group.
How live-stream ad formats and settings work
When monetization is enabled for a live stream, YouTube can serve pre-roll, display, and mid-roll ads. Pre-roll and display ads are automatically enabled when monetization is turned on; mid-roll ads may be automatic or manual. Enabling a format or creating an ad slot does not guarantee that an ad will serve.

Automatic mid-rolls
YouTube recommends automatic mid-rolls, which can show ads at natural breakpoints. Creators can choose a low, medium, or high frequency, and viewers may receive ads at different times. The setting can affect ad delivery, but it cannot guarantee a particular number of ads or a fixed income increase for an individual stream.
What YouTube’s reported uplift means
YouTube reported an average over 20% uplift in in-stream ad revenue per hour among channels using live automatic mid-rolls compared with channels not using them. YouTube reported this result in January 2024, averaged across 207 countries. How to compare your own India and international audiences
- Open YouTube Studio Analytics for your channel and select the Live filter to view ad revenue from live streams and live replays.
- Compare comparable periods. Use periods with similar stream formats and durations, and compare the locations represented in your own audience data rather than treating all non-Indian viewers as one group.
- Look at ad revenue alongside monetized playbacks. Total revenue alone does not distinguish a change in ad prices from a change in how often ads were served.
- Keep metrics separate. Do not use total RPM as a country-specific ad rate: RPM includes revenue sources beyond ads and counts all views in its denominator.
- Allow for delivery differences. Ad formats, ad availability, recent ad exposure, and Premium status can influence whether viewers see an ad.
YouTube identifies the Live filter in Analytics as the way to view revenue from live streams and live replays. This is the relevant starting point for evaluating your channel; it does not turn the results into a universal rate table for other creators. YouTube Help: Understand ad revenue analytics
