How to Start a 24/7 YouTube Lo-Fi Radio Stream with OBS

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To run a 24/7 lo-fi radio stream on YouTube with OBS, prepare an eligible channel and rights-cleared music and visuals, build an OBS scene, connect it to a YouTube broadcast with a private stream key, then test the feed before making it public. OBS sends the video and audio; your computer, power and internet connection must keep working for the stream to remain online. Neither OBS nor YouTube promises uninterrupted 24/7 uptime.

Before you build the stream

Check that your YouTube channel can go live

YouTube’s current live-streaming guidance says the channel must be verified, must not have had a live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days, and the streamer must be at least 16. Check the channel’s eligibility before spending time configuring OBS: YouTube Help: Get started with live streaming.

Clear the music and visual rights

Use music and visuals you created or have permission to use for a YouTube livestream and, if you plan to keep an archive, for that archived use too. Save the applicable license terms and permissions. A track’s availability online or a “copyright free” label does not by itself establish that your use is covered.

YouTube scans live streams for matches to third-party content. A match can lead to a warning, placeholder image, interruption or termination. YouTube says even a licensed stream may be interrupted if the rights owner has not added the channel to its Content ID allowlist. If the broadcast is archived, Content ID claims may be made after the live stream ends. See YouTube Help: Copyright issues with live streams.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Copyright and licensing requirements depend on the catalog, rights, country and intended use; this guide does not determine whether a particular license covers your stream. YouTube’s scanning does not grant permission to use a track.

Set up the OBS scene

  1. Install OBS. Download OBS Studio from the official OBS Project site. OBS is free and open source, and its help materials say it can be used commercially without restrictions.
  2. Create a scene. Add a music playback source and a static image, looped animation or other visual you have permission to use. Check that the picture is framed correctly and not black.
  3. Check audio. Play the track and watch the OBS audio meters. Confirm that the music is reaching the stream mix, is not unintentionally silent, and is not clipping.
  4. Set the output. OBS’s Auto-Configuration Wizard is a useful starting point for basic output settings. Then verify the codec, resolution, frame rate, bitrate and keyframe interval against YouTube’s guidance and what your computer and connection can sustain.

For a largely static or gently animated lo-fi scene, 720p/30 or 1080p/30 is a reasonable practical starting target—not a YouTube-mandated preset. Prefer a stable feed over a higher resolution your connection or computer cannot reliably deliver.

Choose encoder settings for a stable feed

YouTube recommends RTMP or RTMPS, constant bitrate (CBR), keyframes every two seconds (no more than four seconds apart), and up to 60 frames per second. It supports AAC or MP3 audio; for stereo, use the documented stereo AAC or MP3 options. Consult YouTube Help: Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions for the current table and protocol guidance.

Output target YouTube recommended bitrate: AV1/H.265 YouTube recommended bitrate: H.264
1080p at 30 fps 10 Mbps 14 Mbps
720p at 30 fps 6 Mbps 8 Mbps

These bitrate values are YouTube’s recommendations in its encoder table retrieved on October 3, 2026; they are not guarantees of quality or stability. The codec matters: the recommended rates differ between H.264 and AV1/H.265. Set an output your upload connection can sustain with headroom, rather than matching its measured maximum. Test with representative audio and motion, then monitor YouTube’s stream health.

Connect OBS to YouTube and start the broadcast

  1. Create or select a broadcast. In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or select the live broadcast. Copy its stream key. Treat the key as a credential: anyone with access to it may be able to send an encoder feed to your channel.
  2. Configure OBS for YouTube. Select YouTube as the streaming service, or use the key-based setup, and enter the broadcast’s stream key. Check that the service, video output and audio source are the ones you intend to use.
  3. Send the encoder feed. Start streaming in OBS. OBS connects directly from your computer to the streaming destination; it does not send this feed through an OBS relay server.
  4. Check the incoming feed. Wait for the preview in YouTube’s Live Control Room. Confirm that both audio and video are present and that the picture and sound are correct.
  5. Start the viewer-facing broadcast. Follow the current Live Control Room prompts to start the public broadcast. Studio and OBS screens can change, so rely on the controls currently shown rather than an old button-by-button walkthrough.

Test and monitor before relying on a 24/7 run

  • Run a non-public test. Test the complete scene, including representative audio and any motion, before the intended launch. YouTube recommends testing first and monitoring stream health and messages during a live event.
  • Watch OBS connection status. OBS says rising dropped frames and a yellow or red connection indicator can signal an unstable connection or an output bitrate the connection cannot sustain. OBS drops frames to avoid buffering. Reduce the bitrate or improve connection stability if this happens.
  • Check YouTube stream health. Confirm the incoming stream remains healthy and audio and video continue to reach the control room.
  • Plan for local dependencies. With OBS running on your own computer, the stream depends on that host, its power, operating-system behavior, the playback source and internet service. A dedicated mini PC is optional, not a requirement, and no specific model or minimum specification is established here.

The official OBS and YouTube materials cited above do not prescribe a complete restart supervisor, redundant power or network design, or a maximum uptime. A 24/7 local stream therefore needs operational monitoring and a plan for interruptions; do not assume OBS alone will recover every failure.

Common problems and practical fixes

Symptom Likely issue What to check
YouTube preview does not appear OBS is not sending, or the service/key does not match the selected broadcast. Confirm OBS is streaming, the YouTube service and stream key are correct, and the selected broadcast is the one open in Live Control Room.
Preview has no sound The music source is not reaching the stream mix. Check the source’s OBS meters and audio routing; play a test track and verify sound in the YouTube preview.
Picture is black, cropped or wrong The visual source is missing, hidden or framed incorrectly. Check scene sources and visibility in OBS, then inspect the preview before going public.
Dropped frames or unstable connection indicator The upload path may not sustain the configured bitrate. Lower bitrate, test the connection again and prioritize stable delivery over resolution.
Stream interruption after music begins A third-party content match or rights-owner action may be involved. Review YouTube’s alert and the applicable rights. If licensed, ask the rights owner about Content ID channel allowlisting; a license alone may not prevent an interruption.

Or let it run in the cloud
