First find where the sync error begins; don’t start by adding an arbitrary delay or changing VPS providers. Compare a short local recording, the VPS relay output if you can access it, YouTube’s live playback, and the processed archive. A steady offset can often be corrected with a measured source delay. Drift that grows over time calls for checking clocks and timestamps instead: a fixed delay shifts the starting point but cannot correct a timing-rate mismatch.
Find which part of the stream chain is out of sync
Audio and video pass through several stages: capture or source, OBS or FFmpeg encoding, VPS relay, YouTube ingest and processing, then live playback or the archive. The first comparison that shows a mismatch narrows the search. A local recording that is already wrong points to an earlier stage than a recording that is in sync while YouTube playback is not.
Make a brief test with a visible clap or another sharp, repeated sound and an obvious movement. Save a local recording, and compare it with the VPS relay output if that output is accessible, YouTube live playback, and the archive after processing. Also compare the operator’s monitoring audio separately: what you hear locally may be delayed even when the encoded stream is not. YouTube recommends testing with representative audio and movement and monitoring stream health during the event (YouTube encoder settings and live-stream guidance).
Classify the problem: fixed offset, growing drift, or monitoring delay
The offset is steady from the start
Measure whether audio leads or trails video and by how much, using a recording with distinct visual and audible events. OBS community troubleshooting recommends comparing separated audio and video tracks in a recording before applying a correction; treat this as a practical diagnostic, not a formal OBS guarantee (OBS forum sync discussion).

Apply a matching audio Sync Delay or video Render Delay to the source that is actually early. The exact control and label can vary with OBS version and source type, so check the properties and filters available for the implicated source. Change one setting, record the original value, repeat the same test, and measure again. Do not stack guessed delays across OBS, the relay and the player.
The stream starts close to sync, then drifts
A constant delay will not fix cumulative drift. Compare short and longer recordings, then check where the drift first appears: local recording, relay output, monitoring path, or YouTube rendition. Investigate source clock consistency and timestamp handling among capture devices and processing stages. OBS’s source API describes synchronizing audio and asynchronous video using their mutual timestamps and represents an audio sync offset in nanoseconds; that documents an API behavior, not a guarantee that every external capture chain has correct timestamps (OBS Source API Reference, OBS Studio 33.0.0).

A 2017 OBS forum report described a stream that appeared in sync in a local recording and Nginx RTMP view but varied on YouTube live or saved output, with drift reported over about an hour. It is one user’s account, not proof of a general YouTube defect or a verified root cause (OBS forum case).
Only the operator’s monitoring audio is delayed
Do not assume a monitoring delay is present in the encoded stream. Test against the local recording and remote playback independently. An OBS forum participant discussed a possible audio-monitor buffer or clock issue, but that is a hypothesis to test for the affected setup, not a universal explanation.

OBS reports dropped frames
Treat dropped frames as a connection or bitrate problem, not as proof of a lip-sync offset. OBS says dropped frames mean the connection to the remote ingest server is unstable or cannot sustain the selected bitrate. Its troubleshooting guidance suggests lowering video bitrate and gives 75% of total upload speed as a starting point, not a universal YouTube bitrate target; it also suggests testing another server or service (OBS dropped frames troubleshooting).
Run a controlled OBS or FFmpeg diagnosis
- Record the setup. Note the OBS version, operating system, input devices, output mode, source list, relevant audio and video delay settings, and logs from the interval when the issue occurs.
- Capture a repeatable test. Include a visible clap or other sharp sound and clear movement. Save the local recording, and compare each available downstream output in the same way.
- Locate the first bad stage. Write down whether the mismatch appears in monitoring, the local recording, relay output, YouTube live playback, or the archive. Avoid changing unrelated stages before this is clear.
- Make one measured change. For a stable offset, adjust the implicated source’s audio Sync Delay or video Render Delay by the measured amount. For growing drift, examine timestamps and clocks rather than adding a fixed delay.
- Inspect FFmpeg relay timing if applicable. Check input and output stream timestamps. Where you can access the relevant stream, FFplay’s statistics can show audio/video synchronization drift. Its audio-, video-, or external-master-clock choice is documented mainly as a debugging option; observe with it rather than treating it as a blind production correction (FFplay documentation).
- Repeat the same test. Keep the duration and test events consistent, change only the implicated setting, and compare the result. A correction should address the observed pattern without creating a new offset elsewhere.
Check YouTube during a realistic pretest
Use YouTube Live Control Room’s stream-health messages during a pretest and, if needed, a live test. Include audio and movement representative of the intended content, as YouTube advises, and inspect the live rendition as well as the archive after the test ends. Live playback and the processed archive are separate comparisons; if they differ, record which one is out of sync rather than assuming the cause is YouTube. YouTube’s guidance also says Live Control Room can automatically detect encoder resolution and frame rate, so do not assume a manual resolution setting is required unless the stream key is configured that way (YouTube encoder settings and live-stream guidance).

Common mistakes and what to do instead
- Adding a delay without measuring: First identify whether audio leads or trails and estimate the offset from a recording.
- Using a fixed delay for progressive drift: Check clocks and timestamps across the stages where drift begins.
- Trusting monitoring alone: Compare monitoring with an encoded recording or remote stream before changing stream settings.
- Blaming the VPS or YouTube immediately: Compare each accessible stage and keep logs. A single report of different behavior across endpoints cannot establish a general platform fault.
- Changing multiple settings at once: Preserve the original values and change one implicated source or stage per test.
- Treating dropped frames as the sync diagnosis: Investigate bitrate and connection stability separately from audio/video timing.
