YouTube does not guarantee how much a creator will earn, and it says live ad slots are not guaranteed to show ads. To find your actual ad earnings, check the estimated ad revenue for live streams in YouTube Analytics—not a generic online rate or total RPM.
Why there is no standard payout per 1,000 live views
A view is not the same as an ad impression or a monetized playback. Some viewers see no ad, and YouTube decides whether an available live ad slot serves one. As a result, multiplying a published advertising rate by total live views will not reliably predict creator earnings. YouTube says there are no guarantees about how much—or whether—a creator will be paid under the Partner Program. YouTube partner earnings overview · Monetize your live stream
RPM, CPM, and live-stream ad revenue are different
| Metric | What it measures | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| RPM | Creator revenue per 1,000 views after revenue share. YouTube’s RPM can include ads, YouTube Premium, memberships, Super Chat, and Super Stickers. | It describes broader creator revenue, not necessarily ads alone. |
| CPM | Advertiser spend per 1,000 ad impressions before YouTube’s revenue share. | It is not the creator’s earnings per 1,000 video views. |
| Playback-based CPM | Advertiser spend per 1,000 ad-supported playbacks. | An ad-supported playback is not the same as an individual ad impression or total view count. |
| Estimated ad revenue | Revenue attributed to ads, shown separately from broader RPM. | Use this when the question is specifically about ad earnings. |
YouTube defines these metrics in its ad revenue analytics guide. A channel’s ad revenue cannot be calculated by multiplying CPM by all live views: some views have no ads, while ad impressions and monetized playbacks are distinct counts.
How to check what your live streams actually earned
- Open YouTube Studio and go to Analytics for your channel.
- Open the revenue report and choose the Live filter to focus on live streams and live replays.
- Read estimated ad revenue for ad-only earnings. Use RPM only if you want the broader per-view figure that can include Premium and eligible fan-funding revenue.
- When comparing streams or periods, keep the metric and date range consistent. Compare like with like rather than treating total views, monetized playbacks, and ad impressions as interchangeable.

What makes live-stream ad earnings vary
- Ad eligibility and availability: A view may have no ad because ads are off, the content is not advertiser-friendly, no suitable ad is available for that viewer, or another delivery factor applies.
- Viewer and advertiser context: YouTube identifies viewer geography, recent ad exposure, Premium subscriptions, and advertiser targeting as factors that affect whether ads appear. Geography can also affect CPM because advertising-market competition varies.
- Format and timing: Live streams can use pre-roll, display, and mid-roll ads. Mid-rolls may be inserted automatically or manually; an available slot still is not a guarantee that an ad will serve.
- Season and ad mix: Time of year, viewer geography, and the mix of available ad formats can influence CPM, according to YouTube’s analytics guidance.
- What the reported metric includes: RPM can include Premium and eligible fan-funding revenue, so it may be higher or otherwise different from estimated ad revenue.
What YouTube’s 55% revenue share does—and does not—mean
YouTube says the Watch Page Monetization Module pays creators 55% of net revenue from ads displayed or streamed on public videos on the Watch Page. The stated share also applies when public videos are streamed in the YouTube player on other sites or applications. It is a revenue-share term, not a payout per 1,000 views, a CPM, or an RPM. To earn Watch Page ad and YouTube Premium revenue on live-stream videos, creators must accept the Watch Page Monetization Module; the creator’s YouTube Studio agreements contain the applicable contractual details. Live ad controls and other ways to earn
YouTube supports pre-roll and display ads on monetized live streams, with mid-rolls inserted automatically or manually. The platform also documents an option to insert live ads using an Elgato Stream Deck with the YouTube plugin. This is an ad-insertion control, not a guarantee of more ad delivery or higher earnings.
