Start with FFmpeg’s error log and determine whether the process, the input, or only the YouTube output stopped. An Indian VPS location alone does not establish the cause. If FFmpeg is still encoding but its RTMP/RTMPS output fails, verify YouTube’s current endpoint and consider FFmpeg’s FIFO muxer to retry temporary network-output failures.
First identify what stopped
Before changing settings, capture the failure as it happens. Redact the stream key anywhere you share logs or commands; it grants access to your live stream.
- Record the full FFmpeg command with the stream key removed, the FFmpeg version and build, and the failure timestamp with its time zone.
- Save the complete stderr output around the failure, not just the final line.
- Check whether FFmpeg exited or remained running, and whether input frames and timestamps continued.
- Check YouTube Live Control Room: did the encoder disconnect, or did YouTube report an unhealthy stream while the encoder remained connected?
- If available, note VPS provider events and timestamped outbound latency or packet-loss observations.
The first error and the order of events matter. A broken output connection can stop writes even while input and encoding continue: RTMP publishing uses TCP, so a problem on the output connection is distinct from a stopped input. FFmpeg documents RTMP’s TCP transport in its protocol documentation.
Use the symptom to choose a branch
| What you observe | What to investigate next |
|---|---|
| FFmpeg exits | Inspect its first error and the process supervisor or service logs. A restart policy can restart an exited process; it does not repair a persistently broken network route. |
| FFmpeg stays up and reads or encodes, but output writes fail with errors such as a broken pipe or I/O error | Investigate the RTMP/RTMPS connection and verify the endpoint. FIFO output recovery may help with temporary muxer or network-output failures. |
| Input frames or timestamps stop before output errors appear | Diagnose the input source or demuxing path first; changing YouTube output settings will not restore missing input. |
| FFmpeg reports output but YouTube does not ingest the stream | Check the active endpoint, stream key, stream state, encoder compatibility, and Live Control Room status. |
These branches narrow the investigation; they do not identify the cause on a particular host without its logs and connection evidence.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Verify YouTube’s current RTMPS endpoint
YouTube describes RTMPS as RTMP carried over TLS/SSL. Get the active RTMPS URL and stream key from YouTube Live Control Room rather than relying on an old command or a guessed hostname. YouTube notes that the ordinary RTMP URL may appear by default; choose the RTMPS details when configuring a compatible encoder. See YouTube’s RTMPS setup and troubleshooting guidance.
- For an SSL-certificate error, confirm the URL begins with
rtmps, matches the server shown in Live Control Room, and that your FFmpeg build supports RTMPS. - If the SSL error persists and the active URL permits a port to be specified, YouTube advises trying port 443.
- For connection timeouts, verify the server URL and RTMPS support. Do not substitute a port or hostname without checking the active endpoint.
- Keep the stream key private. Redact it from terminal captures, logs, tickets, and screenshots.
Configure FFmpeg FIFO recovery for temporary output failures
FFmpeg’s FIFO pseudo-muxer places a queue between encoding and muxing and runs the actual muxer in a separate thread. Its FIFO documentation says that recovery is especially useful with network output. The project’s illustrative command is:

ffmpeg -re -i INPUT -c:v libx264 -c:a aac -f fifo -fifo_format flv
-drop_pkts_on_overflow 1 -attempt_recovery 1 -recovery_wait_time 1
-map 0:v -map 0:a rtmp://example.com/live/stream_name
This is an example, not a ready-to-run YouTube command. Replace INPUT and the placeholder destination with your actual source and the current YouTube URL plus stream key. Protect the key when constructing, saving, or sharing the command. Confirm that your installed FFmpeg build has the options, and test on a noncritical stream before relying on the change.
Know what each recovery option changes
-f fifoselects the FIFO pseudo-muxer;-fifo_format flvsets the underlying output format used in FFmpeg’s example.-attempt_recovery 1asks FFmpeg to try recovering output after a failure. It cannot make YouTube accept a reconnect or restore content that was missed while disconnected.-recovery_wait_time 1is the example’s retry interval, not a universal best setting. Choose a retry policy appropriate to your stream and test it.- The documented default for
max_recovery_attemptsis zero, meaning unlimited attempts. Set a finite limit if endless retries are undesirable. -drop_pkts_on_overflow 1allows encoding to continue by dropping packets if the FIFO queue fills. This favors keeping up with real time at the cost of omitted content. Without dropping, the encoder can block while waiting for the muxer to catch up.
A reconnect is not a promise of seamless playback. Viewers may see a gap or missing content, especially if packets were dropped or the server does not accept the renewed connection. The full option behavior and example are in the FFmpeg FIFO muxer manual.

Do not mistake TCP keepalive for reconnection
FFmpeg’s RTMP protocol option tcp_keepalive=1 enables the operating system’s basic SO_KEEPALIVE mechanism, which can help detect dead peers on long-lived idle connections. FFmpeg does not use this option to set platform-specific keepalive timings such as TCP_KEEPIDLE; operating-system defaults apply. It is not a reconnect loop, a bandwidth remedy, or a general fix for packet loss on a stream that is actively sending data. See the FFmpeg protocol documentation.
Separate FFmpeg recovery from process supervision
FIFO recovery addresses output or muxer failures while FFmpeg is running. A service manager or other supervisor addresses a process that has exited. If you use a restart policy, check its logs and avoid treating repeated restarts as proof that the network path has recovered. If FFmpeg remains alive and its output connection repeatedly fails, process supervision alone will not solve that connection problem.

When to involve the VPS provider
Escalate when the logs show resets, timeouts, or repeated output failures, and provide evidence rather than assuming the VPS location is responsible. Include:
- UTC timestamps of failures and the destination hostname and port, never the stream key.
- FFmpeg stderr, version/build, and whether the process and input remained healthy.
- Timestamped latency or packet-loss observations, if collected.
Ask the provider to check outbound-path stability, egress or firewall policy, maintenance, and host-level network events at those times. These are questions to investigate, not proof that the provider is at fault. If comparing another region or provider, change one variable at a time and compare the same evidence. Available documentation does not establish an India-specific failure pattern or implicate any Indian VPS provider.
