You can run a continuous YouTube broadcast from a Windows VPS by configuring OBS Studio to play a media source, entering your YouTube stream URL and key, and arranging for OBS to start after a planned restart. The VPS must be able to encode and upload your chosen stream reliably; installing OBS alone does not guarantee uninterrupted service. Follow the setup below, then test boot, reconnect, and archive behavior before relying on it.
Before you set up the VPS
Make sure the channel can livestream
YouTube requires a verified channel with no live-streaming restriction in the preceding 90 days. First-time live-streaming enablement can take up to 24 hours, and YouTube states a minimum age of 16 for livestreaming. Check the current requirements in YouTube’s live-streaming getting-started guide and encoder setup guide before scheduling a broadcast.
Check what the VPS actually provides
OBS lists Windows 10 or Windows 11 and a DirectX 10.1-compatible GPU among its basic system requirements. Those are not a guarantee of streaming capacity: encoding load depends on the encoder, resolution, frame rate, and scene. A virtual GPU or encoder may not behave like a local graphics card. Confirm what the VPS exposes, along with its sustained outbound bandwidth, streaming terms, reboot policy, and network path to YouTube; then test the precise configuration you plan to use. Set up OBS and the prerecorded source
- Install OBS Studio on the VPS. Use a Windows version supported by OBS. Confirm that the VPS has enough resources for your planned encoder and scene, rather than treating the listed baseline requirements as a performance guarantee.
- Create a scene and add media. In OBS, create a scene, add a Media Source, and select the video file stored on the VPS. OBS Media Source supports common video and audio formats and includes a Loop option. Enable looping if the file should repeat, and preview playback and audio before connecting to YouTube. Check what appears or sounds at the end of the file and as it restarts. See OBS Media Sources and the OBS Quick Start Guide.
- Choose an encoder and stream quality. Set resolution, frame rate, encoder, and bitrate in OBS to match the VPS’s tested capacity and the quality you need. YouTube advises choosing settings that are reliable for the available upload connection and testing with audio and movement similar to the real broadcast. There is no single bitrate that is right for every VPS, resolution, frame rate, codec, or network. Monitor stream health and messages during testing. YouTube transcodes live input into multiple output formats for viewers. Use YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions guide for current recommendations.
- Connect OBS to the YouTube stream. In YouTube Studio, create or select the stream in Live Control Room. Copy its stream URL and stream key into OBS’s streaming settings. Treat the key like a password; reset it if you think it has been exposed. Depending on the setup, YouTube may require you to select Go live in Live Control Room after OBS sends its signal. Confirm that the broadcast is actually live rather than assuming the encoder connection published it.
- Run a test broadcast. Check the video, audio, loop point, stream health, and any YouTube messages. Test the VPS’s actual upload capacity under the intended settings, not just its advertised or idle network speed. Verify that viewers can see and hear the stream as expected.
Start OBS automatically after a restart
OBS documents a --startstreaming launch parameter, which starts streaming when OBS launches. For Windows Scheduled Tasks or another automated launch, OBS says to set the working directory to the folder containing obs64.exe. The parameter does not itself ensure Windows signs in, the network is ready, OBS reconnects successfully, or every failure is recovered.

- Configure the Windows launch mechanism to open the OBS executable with
--startstreaming. - Set the launch task’s working directory to the folder containing
obs64.exe. - Test a planned restart and confirm whether OBS opens, the source plays, and YouTube receives the stream. Repeat under realistic network conditions and check what happens if the connection drops.

Plan around YouTube’s archive limit
YouTube states: “All streams under 12 hours will be automatically archived.” Its encoder guidance does not promise automatic archiving for broadcasts lasting 12 hours or more. A continuous 24/7 broadcast should therefore not be treated as one guaranteed replayable video. If archives matter, plan regular stops and restarts under the stated limit, then verify the resulting videos in YouTube Studio. See YouTube’s encoder guide.

Keep the broadcast rights-safe
Before looping a documentary, soundtrack, or other media, make sure you have the rights or permission needed to livestream it on YouTube. A file playing successfully in OBS does not establish that you may broadcast it. Review YouTube’s current rules and account notices before going live, and do not assume that credit, a short excerpt, or a loop makes third-party material permissible. Troubleshoot common failures
- OBS does not start streaming after a restart: Confirm the launch parameter is
--startstreaming, the task points to the intended OBS executable, and its working directory is the folder containingobs64.exe. Test whether Windows sign-in or network readiness is preventing the launch. - YouTube receives no signal: Check the stream URL and key in OBS, confirm the key corresponds to the selected stream in Live Control Room, and verify outbound connectivity from the VPS. Reset the key if it may have been exposed.
- The stream connects but has health warnings or unstable output: Reduce the quality settings to a level the VPS’s measured upload and encoder capacity can sustain. Test with representative audio and motion, and check YouTube’s current encoder guidance.
- The video or audio stops at the end of the file: Confirm that the correct Media Source is used and its Loop option is enabled. Preview the file boundary and verify the source continues after it wraps.
- OBS is running but viewers do not see a live broadcast: Check Live Control Room; some setups require a separate Go live action after the encoder signal arrives.
- A long-running stream has no expected archive: Check its duration and YouTube Studio. Automatic archiving is stated for streams under 12 hours, not guaranteed for longer broadcasts.
