For a recurring YouTube podcast, use a custom stream key if you want the same encoder configuration for every episode, or schedule each episode with Reuse settings to copy a previous stream’s settings and key. Neither approach is mandatory: choose the one that best fits how you manage each event. Treat the key like a password; reset it if exposed, then update the encoder.
How do I choose a stream key for a recurring YouTube podcast broadcast?
A stream key is part of the connection between your encoder and YouTube. YouTube describes stream keys as “like your YouTube stream’s password and address.” Your encoder uses the key together with YouTube’s stream URL to send its audio and video feed. See YouTube Help: Manage live stream settings and Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
- Choose a custom key for reuse if you want a stable encoder setup across episodes.
- Choose Reuse settings if you create a new scheduled event each time and want to carry over the previous stream’s settings, including its key.
- Create or select a different key if your workflow requires it, or if you need to replace a key that may have been exposed.
Review the settings copied to a new event before publishing it. A reused key does not replace the event itself: each scheduled episode still needs its own event page and a working encoder connection.
When should you reuse a key, and when should you reset it?
Use a custom key for a consistent encoder setup
A custom stream key is useful when the same encoder configuration will serve recurring episodes. Keep it in the encoder or another appropriately protected configuration; do not share it publicly or include it in show notes, screenshots, or production documents visible to people who do not need it.

Use Reuse settings to carry details into a new scheduled episode
In YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, schedule a new stream and choose Reuse settings from a previous event. The copied settings include the stream key. Check the copied metadata and settings—including the episode information—before making the event public.
Reset a key after possible exposure
If a key has been shared or exposed, reset it in Live Control Room and replace the old value in the encoder before the next broadcast. YouTube says channel owners and managers can reset a key; editors and viewers cannot. Resetting only in YouTube is not enough if the encoder still holds the old key.

How to connect the encoder for a scheduled episode
- Schedule the event: In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and schedule a live stream. Select Reuse settings from a prior event or set up a new stream.
- Configure the encoder: Choose YouTube if the encoder offers direct integration. Otherwise, enter YouTube’s stream URL and paste in the selected stream key. YouTube’s encoder workflow is documented at Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
- Start the encoder and check the preview: Confirm that the incoming feed appears in Live Control Room before starting the scheduled event.
- Test the actual show conditions: Check speech, music, and moving visuals similar to the planned episode. Watch stream health and monitor audio and video quality during the broadcast.
- Verify any key change: If you reset the key, make sure the encoder has the replacement before the next episode.
YouTube recommends RTMPS, an encrypted extension of RTMP. That is YouTube’s guidance; it is not a claim of independent security testing.
Encoder settings to check before going live
Use settings appropriate to your resolution, frame rate, and codec rather than applying one bitrate to every podcast. YouTube’s current encoder guidance includes H.264, H.265, and AV1 for ordinary SDR configurations, frame rates up to 60 fps, constant bitrate encoding, AAC or MP3 audio, and a 2-second keyframe interval (not more than 4 seconds). Consult YouTube’s full encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions guidance for the configuration you plan to use.

For example, YouTube lists H.264 1080p30 at a 5 Mbps minimum and 14 Mbps recommended; for AV1 or H.265 1080p30, it lists a 4 Mbps minimum and 10 Mbps recommended. These are YouTube recommendations, not measured results. Match the encoder’s codec and frame rate to the relevant entry in YouTube’s guidance, and test the feed before the event rather than assuming a setting that worked at one resolution will work at another.
Do you need a hardware encoder?
No—not just to reuse a stream key. YouTube recommends professional-grade hardware encoders for higher-production-value events, but its setup instructions also cover a general encoder workflow. Choose hardware when your production requirements justify it; key reuse itself is a setting and connection workflow, not a reason to buy dedicated hardware. YouTube’s preparation advice is in YouTube live streaming tips.

Troubleshooting a recurring stream-key setup
The encoder cannot connect
- Check that the encoder is using the correct YouTube stream URL and the key selected for the scheduled event.
- If the key was reset, replace the old value in the encoder. A reset key will not work in an encoder that still has the prior key.
- Confirm the event is set up in Live Control Room, then start the encoder and check whether YouTube receives a preview.
The new event has the wrong settings or episode details
When using Reuse settings, inspect the copied metadata and stream settings before publishing. Update the episode details for the new broadcast rather than assuming the previous event’s information is appropriate.
The preview appears, but the feed has quality problems
Test audio and movement similar to the actual show, then check stream health and the encoder configuration. Verify that the bitrate recommendation corresponds to the selected resolution, frame rate, and codec. YouTube’s troubleshooting page is Troubleshoot your YouTube live stream.
