Next, remove resources your workflow does not need—such as a graphical desktop for a simple file loop—and compare the full VPS bill with cloud playout at the same hours, storage and channel count. There is no reliable savings figure without your own invoice and stream profile.
Start with the costs your stream actually creates
A 24/7 stream sends data continuously. Before changing providers or rebuilding the setup, note the figures that determine your bill and the resources your stream uses.
- VPS plan, region, recurring charge and contract terms.
- Included outbound transfer, how the provider counts it, and the overage rate.
- CPU, RAM and storage allocation, plus observed usage during the stream.
- Outgoing video and audio bitrate, resolution, frame rate and hours streamed per month.
- Whether the setup re-encodes video, runs OBS scenes, uses overlays or needs live intervention.
Estimate monthly data from the aggregate outgoing bitrate and actual run time, then compare the result with the provider’s billing definition. Do not treat a bandwidth estimate as a guaranteed invoice: providers may count traffic differently. Space-Node’s 2026 VPS guide estimates about 1 TB per month for a 2.5 Mbps example stream; that is its example, not a universal allowance or bill (Space-Node’s guide).
Test a lower stream profile before changing the VPS
Bitrate directly affects how much outbound data a continuous stream sends. YouTube publishes minimum and recommended input bitrates by resolution, frame rate and codec. The figures below are YouTube’s published settings, accessed in 2026; they are not a promise that a minimum rate will look good for every video.

Choose a supported profile that remains watchable for your material, rather than selecting the lowest number automatically. A static title card or slowly changing scene may tolerate a lower bitrate than fast motion, but test representative footage and audio before making the change permanent. Keep the old profile available for rollback and monitor YouTube’s stream health.
YouTube says it automatically transcodes live input into multiple output formats for viewers on different devices and networks (YouTube Help: encoder settings and live streaming). That means audience device options do not, by themselves, require you to ingest at the highest possible resolution. Source quality, motion and viewer needs still matter.

Apply YouTube’s ingest settings and test them
YouTube’s guidance specifies constant bitrate (CBR) and a recommended two-second keyframe interval, not exceeding four seconds. It supports RTMP and RTMPS and recommends RTMPS for an encrypted connection. Test with audio and motion similar to the real broadcast, then verify the stream-health indicators in Live Control Room before relying on the new profile (YouTube’s current encoder guidance).
Google describes RTMPS as RTMP tunneled through SSL/TLS. Its developer documentation specifies the rtmps scheme, a valid YouTube RTMPS ingest endpoint and port 443; integrations must also handle SNI as described there. That documentation was last updated 2026-09-14 UTC (Google for Developers: RTMPS).

Remove VPS resources the workflow does not use
For a straightforward prerecorded-file loop, assess headless FFmpeg
If the job is simply to send a prerecorded file repeatedly, a graphical desktop may be unnecessary. Space-Node’s 2026 guide demonstrates a command-line FFmpeg loop without a desktop environment and treats OBS as a separate graphical workflow (Space-Node’s FFmpeg and VPS guide). This is an option to evaluate, not a guarantee that any VPS size will work: measure CPU and memory under your actual workload.
Check whether your current process re-encodes the video. If the source can be sent reliably without re-encoding, that may reduce CPU demand; do not switch to stream copy without validating the file’s container and codecs, timestamps, audio and YouTube ingestion behavior. A lower-cost instance that cannot maintain a stable feed is not a saving.

Keep OBS when its production features are needed
OBS remains appropriate when you need scenes, overlays, a graphical interface, multiple sources or live intervention. Compare its real CPU and RAM use—including any encoding—against a simpler headless workflow. The right choice depends on the production, not on a general claim that one program is always cheaper.

When evaluating another VPS plan, compare the same operating hours and stream profile. A low monthly compute price can be offset by a small transfer allowance, overage charges, insufficient storage or an unsuitable region. Include support and reliability terms, contract duration, setup effort and any migration work.

Then compare self-managed hosting with managed cloud playout using equivalent monthly hours, media storage, concurrent channels and recovery requirements. Cloud services can remove the need to operate a VPS, but their time, storage and concurrency limits—and total current price—must be checked against your own use. Vendor descriptions establish advertised workflows, not that a service will cost less for your channel.
Make reductions without making outages more likely
- Save the current VPS invoice, plan details, resource-use measurements and stream settings.
- Calculate expected outgoing data from the combined audio and video bitrate and actual monthly run time; compare it with the provider’s specific transfer accounting and overage terms.
- Test a lower supported bitrate or resolution on representative content. Check picture, audio and YouTube stream health, and retain a rollback profile.
- For a simple file loop, measure whether headless FFmpeg can replace a desktop-based setup. Preserve OBS if scenes or interactive production are necessary.
- Validate any workflow that avoids re-encoding against the actual media files and YouTube ingest before deploying it continuously.
- Compare a right-sized VPS and cloud playout on equivalent hours, storage, concurrency, reliability needs and operator time.
- Keep restart or reconnect monitoring and a tested fallback. YouTube recommends testing and monitoring stream health; a cheaper configuration that repeatedly drops offline may cost more in lost viewing time.
