To make a YouTube podcast stream with a now playing screen, create a live stream in YouTube Studio, send its stream key from OBS, and build an OBS scene with your podcast audio, artwork, and episode title. Add a compatible overlay as an OBS Browser Source if you want metadata to update automatically; otherwise, use text and image sources you update yourself. Test the sound, display, and stream preview before going live.
What you need before you start
- A YouTube channel eligible for live streaming. YouTube says first-time live streaming may take up to 24 hours to become available. Its guidance also lists channel verification, no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days, and a minimum age of 16. Check YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance for current requirements.
- OBS Studio installed on a computer, plus the podcast audio you intend to broadcast or a microphone or other audio source.
- Episode artwork and a title for the screen. An automatic overlay is optional; a static title and artwork can work well for a pre-recorded episode.
- Permission to livestream the audio and artwork on YouTube, and to leave them in the archived replay if you keep one.
A now-playing display is not an automatic YouTube feature. It comes from your OBS scene, usually through text and image sources or a separate overlay page. Whether an overlay can update automatically depends on the audio source and its integration.
Create the YouTube live stream
- In YouTube Studio, select Create, then Go Live. Create a new stream or schedule one, and enter the title, description, visibility, and other event details.
- In Live Control Room, copy the stream URL and stream key. YouTube describes the key as the value that tells your encoder where to send the feed and lets YouTube accept it. Treat it like a password: do not share or publish it. If it is exposed, reset it in Live Control Room.
- For a scheduled broadcast, keep Live Control Room open so you can check the incoming preview before starting the public event.
See YouTube’s encoder setup guide for the current flow and eligibility details.
Build the podcast scene in OBS
- Open OBS and go to Settings > Stream. Choose YouTube if available, or enter the server and stream key from Live Control Room. Keep the key private.
- In the Sources dock, add the audio source for the show: for example, a microphone, captured application audio, or an existing media source. Confirm its meter responds when audio plays.
- Add an image source for the episode artwork or a background. Add a text source for the episode title, podcast name, and any other essential identification. Keep text large and high-contrast enough to read on a phone.
- Arrange and resize sources in the preview. Leave space for the title and artwork, and make sure no overlay hides important information.
OBS scenes are assembled from sources such as audio, images, text, media, and browser pages; see the OBS Sources Guide for source behavior.

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Add a now-playing overlay
Automatic metadata overlay
- Choose an overlay that explicitly supports the player or audio source you will use. A podcast RSS feed, local audio file, YouTube video, and YouTube Music player expose different information; support for one does not establish support for another.
- Copy the overlay URL provided by its service. In OBS, add a Browser Source from the Sources dock and paste the URL. Set the source width and height to match the overlay’s intended layout, then place and resize it in the scene.
- If the overlay offers transparency, check that it renders correctly over your artwork. Play or switch episodes and verify that the title and artwork update to the right item.
OBS Browser Source embeds a web page in the scene; its width and height define the browser viewport. Refer to the Browser Source documentation. The OBS community resource Music on stream describes a current-song overlay with YouTube and YouTube Music among its supported inputs. Glitch Studios’ Now Playing page describes displaying artist, title, and album art through Browser Source. These are provider descriptions, not a guarantee that an overlay will read your particular podcast setup. Confirm the exact source and metadata fields before relying on automatic updates.
Song identification can fail for muted or non-music audio and tracks that are difficult to fingerprint. For episode titles, metadata from a compatible integration is generally a better fit than song recognition. If the overlay reads the wrong player or does not refresh, use an OBS text source and image source instead.

Manual title and artwork
For a pre-recorded episode, a static scene with episode artwork and a text title is a straightforward fallback. Update the text and image between episodes. It requires a manual edit, but does not depend on an overlay detecting the audio correctly.
Set encoder output and start the stream
YouTube’s encoder guidance recommends RTMPS where available and describes H.264 video, AAC or MP3 audio, constant bitrate encoding, and a two-second keyframe interval. Choose a resolution and bitrate your upload connection can sustain; a mostly static podcast scene rarely needs elaborate motion graphics. Consult YouTube’s current live stream settings rather than copying an aggressive bitrate that your connection cannot maintain.

- Before announcing the event, run a private or unlisted test where appropriate. Confirm OBS audio meters move, the audio is reaching YouTube, and the episode title and artwork are correct.
- Listen for echo, unintended desktop audio, clipping, or silence. Check that the on-screen information remains readable and that the overlay updates when the episode changes, if you use one.
- For a scheduled stream, start the OBS encoder and wait for the preview in Live Control Room. Check stream health, then select Go live.
- During the event, monitor both audio and stream health. When finished, stop the encoder and end the event in Live Control Room.
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; check current archive behavior if you plan a longer broadcast. See its encoder guide for stream setup guidance.
Copyright and replay rights
YouTube scans live streams for third-party material. A match can trigger a warning and placeholder image; if the material remains, YouTube may interrupt or terminate the stream. Even licensed material can be interrupted if the rights owner has not added your channel to its Content ID allowlist. YouTube explains these risks in its live-stream copyright guidance.

Do not assume a subscription to a music service grants permission to broadcast its content publicly. Check that you own or have permission to use the podcast audio, intro music, artwork, and any video in a YouTube livestream, including the archived replay. Audience-limited visibility does not remove the need to clear rights.

| Problem | Likely cause | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| You cannot start a live stream | Live streaming may not yet be enabled, or the channel may not meet YouTube’s current eligibility requirements. | Check YouTube’s eligibility guidance, including verification and any restrictions, and allow up to 24 hours for first-time enablement. |
| OBS does not connect to YouTube | The stream key or server details are incorrect, or the key has been reset. | Copy the current URL and key from Live Control Room into Settings > Stream. If the key was exposed, reset it in Live Control Room and update OBS. |
| YouTube receives no audio | The wrong audio source is selected, muted, or not routed to OBS. | Check the OBS mixer meters while playing the episode, then verify the correct source and output. Listen to the YouTube preview before going live. |
| The overlay is blank or shows the wrong item | The overlay may not support the selected player, may need a different URL or integration, or may not identify spoken-word audio. | Verify its supported input and settings. If it still fails, replace it with a manually updated OBS text source and image source. |
| The stream stutters or reports poor health | The upload connection may not sustain the chosen output settings. | Use a resolution and bitrate appropriate for the available upload bandwidth, then test and monitor stream health in Live Control Room. |
| The stream is interrupted over third-party content | YouTube may have detected a rights-managed item; a licence may not include livestream rights or channel allowlisting. | Use content cleared for livestream and replay distribution on YouTube, and contact the rights owner about the required permission or allowlisting. |
