A live interruption and a later Content ID claim on the archive are separate events, and a license may not prevent interruption unless the rights owner has allowlisted your channel.
What happens when YouTube detects copyrighted content in a live stream?
YouTube scans live streams for third-party content, including other live broadcasts. If it detects a match, it may show a placeholder and warn you to stop using the material. Addressing the issue may let the stream continue; leaving the material in place can lead to interruption or termination. If the completed stream is archived, YouTube may make a separate Content ID claim on that recording after the stream ends. YouTube Help: Copyright issues with live streams
A license does not necessarily prevent a live interruption: YouTube says the rights owner may need to add your channel to its Content ID allowlist. Coordinate with the owner before you go live. Do not assume that restricting a stream to territories where you have rights will avoid an interruption if the channel is not allowlisted.
What to do during the live podcast stream
- Respond to the warning quickly. Stop using or remove the flagged music, clip, or other material. YouTube says addressing the issue can allow the stream to continue, while leaving it in place can result in interruption or termination.
- For licensed material, contact the rights owner. Ask them to allowlist your YouTube channel in Content ID before the broadcast. Keep a record of the permission and the channel details you provided.
- Do not treat the live warning as the final archive decision. If the stream is archived, inspect the recording’s claim separately in Studio once processing is complete.
How to review a claim on the archived stream
- Open YouTube Studio and find the archived livestream in your content.
- Open its Restrictions or Claims details. Check the matched timestamps or segment, the claimant, and the policy applied.
- Check for multiple claimants and regional differences. Different claimants may cover different segments, and a policy can vary by country or region. An unfamiliar claimant name alone does not prove a claim is wrong.
- Choose the response that matches your rights and the impact of the claim. If a claim is valid or its policy is acceptable, you can leave it in place. If the matched material should not remain, use an available Studio editing option. Dispute or appeal only when you have a legitimate basis and are confident in it.
Content ID claims can block, monetize, or track a video, and the outcome may differ by territory. A claim is not itself a copyright strike. A valid copyright removal request is different: it can remove the video and apply a strike. YouTube Help: Learn about copyright claims · YouTube Help: About copyright removal requests

Choosing between leaving, editing, disputing, and appealing
| Option | When it may fit | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Leave the claim | The claim is valid, or the policy is acceptable to you. | A claim may block, track, or monetize the video, including differently by territory. It does not by itself mean your channel has a strike. YouTube Help |
| Edit out the match | You do not need the material in the archive, or you can resolve the issue without challenging ownership. | Depending on the claim and Studio options, YouTube lists muting claimed audio, trimming the segment, or replacing a song using the YouTube Audio Library. Check the result after processing to see whether the claim was resolved. YouTube Help |
| Dispute | You have a valid basis, such as all necessary rights, a copyright exception that applies, or a likely misidentification or error. | The claimant has 30 days to respond. Credit, owning a copy, or choosing not to monetize is not by itself a valid reason. An unsupported dispute may prompt the claimant to seek removal. YouTube Help: Dispute a copyright claim — Computer |
| Appeal | You are eligible to appeal and are confident in your rights position, including in some cases where a blocked claim offers “Escalate to Appeal.” | The claimant normally has 7 days to respond. Escalating skips the initial dispute stage, and a rejected appeal can lead to a removal request. YouTube Help: Appeal a copyright claim — Computer |
YouTube does not decide ownership disputes. Its guidance says, “Ultimately, YouTube can’t decide whether you should dispute a claim.” A podcast clip or music bed cannot be declared fair use based on the platform process alone: YouTube says automated systems cannot decide fair use because it is a subjective, case-by-case decision that only courts can make. The applicable law and facts depend on the specific use and jurisdiction. YouTube Help: Fair use on YouTube
What happens to revenue during a dispute?
YouTube may hold revenue earned while a Content ID claim is disputed and later pay it to the appropriate party once the claim is resolved. If you dispute within 5 days of the claim, YouTube says revenue is held from the date the claim was placed; if you dispute later, holding starts on the dispute date. Revenue data does not appear in Analytics while an active claim is being disputed or appealed. YouTube Help: Monetization during copyright claim disputes

Common mistakes to avoid
- Assuming a license alone prevents a live interruption: arrange Content ID allowlisting with the rights owner in advance.
- Disputing because you gave credit or bought a copy: neither fact alone establishes permission to use the work in a livestream or archive.
- Assuming an unfamiliar claimant proves an error: check the actual match, timestamps, segments, and regional policy first.
- Treating a claim, dispute, appeal, and takedown as interchangeable: a claim affects the video under a Content ID policy; a valid removal request can remove it and create a strike.
- Assuming a podcast excerpt is automatically fair use: the answer depends on the use and applicable law; YouTube’s automated matching cannot make that legal determination.
