How to Loop Multiple Prerecorded Videos in a YouTube Livestream from a VPS

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Run an encoder such as FFmpeg on the VPS, feed it an explicitly ordered playlist of your video files, and send its output to the stream URL and key for a YouTube live stream. In FFmpeg, -re paces file input in real time and -stream_loop -1 loops an input indefinitely. Those options do not, by themselves, arrange several files into a playlist or guarantee seamless joins: prepare and test the sequence first.

Before you start

  • A Linux VPS with the media files available locally or on mounted storage, and enough sustained compute and outbound network capacity for your chosen encoding and stream. There is no universal CPU, memory, or bandwidth minimum established for this workflow; requirements depend on whether you re-encode, the output settings, and provider limits.
  • FFmpeg installed on the VPS. Check the installed build and its available input, demuxer, and encoder support before relying on a particular command.
  • A YouTube channel eligible to livestream. YouTube says the channel must be verified and must not have had live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days; live streaming is for users at least 16 years old. First-time activation may take up to 24 hours. Confirm your account’s current status in YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance.
  • Permission to use every video, soundtrack, image, and other element in the broadcast. YouTube requires livestream content to follow its Community Guidelines and Terms of Service. A loop setup does not establish copyright permission or monetization eligibility.

Prepare and order the videos

Inspect the files

List the files in the order you want viewers to see them. Inspect each file’s video and audio streams, resolution, frame rate, codec, duration, and timestamps before choosing a playlist or concat approach. FFmpeg’s documentation describes its input and looping options, but no single multi-file command is reliable for every combination of files.

Choose a sequencing method and test it

Use a playlist or concat workflow that fits the actual media and your installed FFmpeg build, then arrange for that sequence to repeat. Matching codecs, dimensions, frame rates, audio layout, and timestamp behavior can make files easier to combine, but do not assume that matching headline settings guarantee a clean join. Play through the transitions and listen for gaps, clicks, silence, or audio/video drift before sending the feed to YouTube. The official FFmpeg option documentation does not certify seamless transitions for arbitrary files.

Configure YouTube Live Control Room

  1. Open YouTube Studio and create or select the intended livestream in Live Control Room.
  2. Copy the stream’s ingest server URL and stream key from the encoder setup. YouTube’s encoder connection guide explains this flow. Use the details for the specific stream you intend to run.
  3. Keep the stream key private. Avoid placing it in a public script repository, shell history, screenshots, or logs. If it is exposed, replace or rotate it in YouTube Studio and update the VPS configuration.
  4. Prefer RTMPS when your encoder and workflow support it. YouTube recommends RTMPS and describes it as encrypting data to and through Google’s servers; see its RTMPS guidance.

Build and start the FFmpeg encoder

Use real-time pacing and loop the sequence

For a single file, the conceptual command shape is ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i video.mp4 ... OUTPUT. Put input options before the corresponding -i. For multiple files, first make FFmpeg read the intended ordered sequence through a suitable playlist or concat input; then apply looping to that input as appropriate for the method. The exact command depends on the input format, stream mapping, codecs, timestamps, and installed FFmpeg build, so test with your files rather than treating the single-file example as a drop-in multi-file command.

  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

-re reads the file at its native frame rate rather than sending it as fast as the server can process it; FFmpeg notes that real-time pacing is useful when output packet timing matters, such as live streaming. -stream_loop -1 requests an infinite loop of the relevant input. Neither option handles process supervision, a dropped network connection, or a VPS restart.

Choose output settings for the YouTube stream

Map the intended video and audio streams, select codecs and a bitrate supported by the installed FFmpeg build, and match the output to the resolution and frame rate you intend to broadcast. Check YouTube’s current encoder settings for the recommended settings that fit that output. YouTube recommends constant bitrate encoding and a 2-second keyframe interval; its guidance says not to exceed 4 seconds. Do not copy a bitrate without checking the current recommendation for your resolution, frame rate, and codec.

Stream copy may reduce VPS encoding work when the source already meets the output requirements, but codec compatibility, timestamps, and file-to-file differences can make it unsuitable. Re-encoding provides more control over output compatibility but uses VPS CPU or GPU resources. Test the complete sequence and output settings on the actual VPS before relying on an unattended broadcast.

Supply the ingest destination securely

Configure FFmpeg’s output destination with the server URL and stream key from YouTube Live Control Room, using a method that does not expose the key in public logs or shell history. The final output options and URL syntax depend on the selected protocol, encoder, and FFmpeg build; consult the relevant FFmpeg and YouTube documentation rather than copying an unverified command.

Verify the broadcast and keep it running

  1. Start the FFmpeg process and check its output for input, encoding, and connection errors.
  2. In Live Control Room, wait for YouTube to report an incoming signal and show the preview.
  3. If the event is scheduled and awaiting manual start, use the Live Control Room’s Go live control when the preview is ready. Follow the controls shown for the selected stream.
  4. Monitor the VPS process, available storage, outbound connection, and YouTube ingest state. Arrange separate process supervision and alerting if unattended operation matters; -re is pacing, not a retry system.
  5. When ending the broadcast, stop the encoder and use the applicable Live Control Room control. YouTube’s current stream-management workflow determines the remaining event and archive steps.

Troubleshoot common failures

Symptom Likely cause What to check
YouTube receives no video Wrong stream URL or key, encoder connection failure, or incorrect output configuration. Confirm the selected stream’s current ingest details in Live Control Room, check FFmpeg’s connection errors, and verify protocol and output settings.
Video arrives too quickly or playback timing is wrong File input is not being paced for real-time output. Check that -re is placed before the relevant input’s -i option.
The sequence does not repeat as intended The loop option is applied to an individual file or input rather than the complete intended sequence, or the playlist/concat method does not behave as expected. Test the sequence and its loop boundary locally or in a private test stream, then adjust the playlist or concat approach for the actual files.
Black frames, silence, a gap, or a jump at a join Differences in streams, codecs, dimensions, frame rates, audio, or timestamps between files. Inspect the files and play through each transition; normalize or re-encode where needed, then retest.
Encoding falls behind or the stream becomes unstable The VPS may not sustain the selected encoding workload or outbound stream, or its network/provider limits may be reached. Check CPU/GPU load, encoder output, network stability, and provider bandwidth rules. Reduce encoding workload or output demands only after matching the change to YouTube’s current settings.
The feed stops after a VPS, process, or network failure FFmpeg looping does not restart a crashed process or restore a failed connection. Use tested process supervision and alerts, and verify restart and reconnection behavior independently before leaving the stream unattended.

Plan for VPS cost and operational limits

VPS cost depends on the chosen instance, storage, sustained outbound bandwidth rules, and whether FFmpeg must re-encode. Concurrent streams and higher-resolution output can change resource needs. The available official FFmpeg and YouTube guidance does not establish a universal instance size or provider price, so check the provider’s current limits and test the intended workload. Include the time needed to monitor failures and maintain the playlist in the operating cost.
