Before you build it, confirm your channel is eligible, choose whether the VPS will re-encode the files, and test the playlist against a private or unlisted event. YouTube documents its ingest settings, and FFmpeg documents media pipelines and concatenation concepts, but neither establishes a universal, verified command for looping every kind of playlist indefinitely.
What you need before starting
- An eligible YouTube channel: YouTube Help says the channel must be verified and must not have had a live-streaming restriction in the preceding 90 days. It also states that creators must be at least 16 to livestream. Check the current requirements at YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance.
- A Live Control Room event: Create or schedule the event in YouTube Studio and obtain its stream URL and stream key. YouTube describes the key as password-like; treat it like a credential and reset it if exposed. See YouTube’s encoder setup guidance and stream settings guidance.
- A VPS and media files: Store the video files where the encoder can read them, and confirm the VPS provider’s storage, network, and data-transfer terms. There is no universal VPS size: CPU requirements depend on whether the files are re-encoded, while the network must sustain the outgoing stream.
- An encoder: FFmpeg is a plausible option for reading media inputs and writing an output stream. Its documentation explains its input/output pipeline and sequential concatenation concepts, but does not by itself validate a complete repeat-forever YouTube playlist command. See FFmpeg documentation.
Choose whether to re-encode or pass through
Re-encoding
Re-encoding converts the playlist into a consistent output format before sending it to YouTube. This is often the safer direction when clips differ in codec, dimensions, frame rate, timestamps, or audio layout, but it adds CPU work on the VPS. Confirm that the server can sustain the chosen settings with the actual files and duration.
Passing through compatible streams
Passing through avoids video re-encoding and reduces encoder workload, but it is only appropriate when the inputs and transitions are compatible with the output stream. Do not assume that arbitrary MP4 files can be joined seamlessly just because they share a file extension. Differences in codecs, dimensions, frame rates, timestamps, or audio layout can cause transition problems or ingest failures.
Set YouTube ingest settings
YouTube recommends RTMPS, an encrypted extension to RTMP, for sending an encoder feed to its ingest servers. Its current settings guidance lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 video; AAC or MP3 audio; constant bitrate (CBR) encoding; frame rates up to 60 fps; and a recommended keyframe interval of 2 seconds, not exceeding 4 seconds. Check YouTube’s encoder settings for current recommendations and codec-specific details.

Choose a bitrate and format that the source material, encoder, VPS, and sustained uplink can support. YouTube transcodes live feeds into formats suited to different viewer devices and network conditions. HDR has distinct codec and protocol requirements, so treat HDR as a separate configuration rather than assuming ordinary playlist settings apply.
Build and test the playlist on the VPS
- Prepare representative files. Put the intended clips on the VPS and inspect their video and audio properties. Include the files most likely to expose differences, such as clips with different frame rates, dimensions, codecs, or audio layouts.
- Choose the playlist behavior. Decide the play order, whether the sequence should repeat, and what should happen at transitions. FFmpeg’s official documentation describes media inputs and sequential concatenation, but the sources cited here do not validate a single command for an endlessly repeating, mixed-format playlist sent to YouTube.
- Configure the encoder for the event. Use the event’s YouTube ingest URL and stream key, preferably over RTMPS, and set the selected codec, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, audio format, and keyframe interval. Verify the exact options against the installed FFmpeg version and your chosen input files before relying on them.
- Protect the stream key. Do not place it in public code, screenshots, logs, world-readable configuration files, or shell history. Restrict access to any configuration that contains it. If it is exposed, reset it in YouTube Studio before streaming again.
- Run a test event. Use a private or unlisted event and the real VPS, files, and intended settings. Check the transitions and listen for audio problems instead of testing only a short, uniform clip.
A command copied from an example may not work with your installed FFmpeg build, file mix, or event configuration. Verify the playlist and output in a test event rather than treating an untested command as a proven recipe.

Estimate VPS network and transfer needs
The stream bitrate is the main starting point for estimating continuous outbound traffic: multiply the bitrate by the time you plan to stream, then allow for protocol overhead and the provider’s billing method. Confirm the provider’s actual transfer allowance, sustained network capacity, and any regional or service limits rather than assuming a VPS plan’s headline bandwidth is guaranteed for continuous streaming.
YouTube recommends leaving bandwidth headroom, including a 20% margin above the stream bitrate in its operational tips. That is YouTube’s recommendation, not a guarantee against VPS, routing, or provider failures. A VPS that transcodes also needs enough CPU capacity for the selected codec and output settings; no single CPU or memory specification fits every playlist.

Start the scheduled YouTube Live stream
- In YouTube Studio, create or schedule the event in Live Control Room and configure the encoder with that event’s stream URL and key.
- Start the encoder before the scheduled event so YouTube has time to receive the feed.
- Wait for the incoming preview in Live Control Room. Check picture, sound, transitions, and stream health before taking the event live.
- When the preview and health indicators are acceptable, click Go live in Live Control Room for a scheduled event.
- Monitor the encoder, VPS, and YouTube stream health while it runs. At the end, stop the stream in YouTube and stop the encoder as appropriate.
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not assume a longer broadcast will be archived in the same way; check YouTube’s current guidance for the event you plan to run. Operational setup and monitoring recommendations are covered in YouTube’s live-streaming tips.
Common problems and fixes
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube does not show an incoming preview | The event, ingest URL, key, or encoder connection may be incorrect, or the encoder may not be sending a compatible feed. | Confirm the correct event and key in Live Control Room, check the encoder’s connection status and logs, and verify the output settings against YouTube’s current encoder guidance. |
| The stream starts but drops or buffers | The VPS uplink may not sustain the bitrate, or the provider may impose transfer or network limits. | Check sustained outbound bandwidth and provider terms; reduce output bitrate or resolution if necessary, and retain YouTube’s recommended bandwidth margin. |
| Playback breaks at a playlist transition | Adjacent files may differ in media properties or timing, making passthrough concatenation unsuitable. | Test the actual transition, inspect the files’ codecs, dimensions, frame rates, timestamps, and audio layouts, and normalize or re-encode where needed. |
| Video or audio is missing or incompatible | The selected codec, audio format, or output settings may not match the source or ingest requirements. | Check the encoder output and the source streams, then choose a supported codec and audio format from YouTube’s current settings guidance. |
| The stream key may have been exposed | A key was included in shell history, a log, public code, or an accessible configuration. | Reset the key in YouTube Studio and update the VPS encoder configuration with the replacement. |
Copyright, permissions, and monetization
Before looping a documentary, soundtrack, or other recording, make sure you have the rights or permissions needed to livestream it on YouTube. A video being publicly available or previously uploaded does not, on its own, establish permission to rebroadcast it. YouTube’s copyright and monetization rules can affect a live stream and its archive; review the current rules for your channel and content before scheduling a long-running event. Technical ability to send a feed does not establish that the content is authorized or eligible for monetization.
