In OBS Studio, add your podcast logo as an Image Source and place a progress graphic over the video as a Browser Source or custom graphic. OBS can position and layer these visuals, but it does not provide a built-in episode progress bar that automatically tracks playback. For a bar synchronized to the episode, use an overlay with a documented connection to the player’s current position and test it before going live.
What you need to build the scene
- OBS Studio and a scene for the broadcast.
- A podcast logo saved as an image. A transparent-background image usually sits more cleanly over video.
- A progress graphic: a static image, a manually updated bar, or a web overlay designed to animate or read playback timing.
- Your YouTube stream URL and stream key, available through YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room.
OBS supports webpages as sources and docks through obs-browser, which allows web-based overlays in a scene. OBS Browser Source documentation explains the feature. Adding a browser overlay only places it on the canvas; it does not by itself link the bar to episode playback.
Add the podcast logo in OBS
- Select or create a scene. In OBS, select the scene you will use for the livestream, or create one in the Scenes panel.
- Add the logo. In the Sources panel, select + and choose Image. Create or select the image source, then choose the logo file.
- Position and size it. Select the logo in the preview and drag it into place. Use the bounding box handles to resize it. Keep it legible at the stream’s output size and away from captions or other important on-screen content.
- Check source order. A source higher in the Sources list appears over sources below it. Move the logo above the video if it is hidden behind the background.

Choose a progress bar that matches your needs
Static or manually updated graphic
Use a static graphic if the bar is decorative, or update it manually at intervals if approximate progress is enough. This is the simplest option, but it will not necessarily match the episode’s actual playback position, especially if playback pauses, restarts, or skips.

Browser Source with a purpose-built overlay
If you want an animated bar, add a compatible web overlay as a Browser Source and set its width and height to suit your stream canvas. Before relying on it, verify that the overlay can get the current playback position and duration from the player or control method you use. A timer that merely counts down from a set duration can drift if playback changes.
Local episode playback in OBS
For an episode stored locally, OBS Media Source can play supported audio files, including MP3, AAC, OGG, and WAV. It includes playback controls such as looping and restarting playback when the source becomes active. The documented Media Source controls do not establish an automatic progress-bar display or synchronization feature. See the OBS Media Sources documentation.

Add the progress graphic to the scene
- Add the source. For a web overlay, select + in Sources and choose Browser. Enter the overlay’s URL and set dimensions that fit the stream canvas. For a graphic file, add it as an Image source instead.
- Place and layer it. Select the source in the preview, position and resize it, then arrange it in the Sources list so it appears above the video and below or above the logo as intended.
- Make its behavior clear. If the bar is static or manually timed, do not present it as a live reading of episode position. If it is meant to track playback, test that connection with the actual player and overlay combination you plan to use.
Connect OBS to YouTube
- In YouTube Studio, select Create → Go Live to open the Live Control Room.
- Connect OBS using YouTube’s stream URL and stream key. Treat the key like a password: do not show it on screen or include it in a screenshot.
- Start streaming from OBS. For a scheduled stream, wait for the preview in YouTube’s Live Control Room, then select Go live.
YouTube’s guide, Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder, describes the encoder connection workflow. YouTube explains: “An encoder converts your video into a digital format to stream on YouTube.”
Preflight the stream before broadcasting
- Check the OBS preview at the intended output size: the logo and bar should be visible, legible, and not cropped.
- Listen to the episode through the stream mix and confirm the audio source is enabled.
- For a synchronized bar, test from the beginning and after seeking or pausing. Confirm the display follows the actual playback position rather than just elapsed wall-clock time.
- Check the YouTube preview before starting a scheduled live broadcast.
- Make sure the episode and visuals are authorized for livestream use. A logo or overlay does not grant rights to music, recordings, footage, or other material in the episode.

Common progress-bar problems
