Use FFmpeg on an always-on remote server: put the videos you want in a deliberately ordered concat playlist, loop that playlist as the input, and send the encoded output to YouTube Live using the stream URL and key from YouTube Studio. The exact command depends on whether the files have compatible streams and on your FFmpeg build, so test the whole setup before relying on it unattended.
What you need before starting
- An always-on server with FFmpeg installed, access to the video files, and enough stable outbound bandwidth for the chosen stream bitrate.
- A YouTube channel that is verified and has had no live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days, as required by YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance.
- A stream URL and stream key created in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room. Treat the key as a secret: it authorizes the encoder feed.
- A set of files you have the rights to stream, and a plan for monitoring and restarting the encoder if the process, server, or network fails.
For a documentary channel, permission to upload or show a film does not necessarily settle whether you may rebroadcast it as a continuous live stream. Check the rights and any license terms for the specific use, and review YouTube’s current Community Guidelines and copyright rules before scheduling a public stream.
Create the YouTube Live stream
- Open YouTube Studio and go to Live Control Room. Create or schedule an encoder stream.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key shown for that stream. Use the current values from Studio rather than an address copied from an old script or tutorial. YouTube recommends RTMPS, the encrypted form of RTMP, where your encoder supports it; see its live encoder settings.
- Check privacy, auto-start, and auto-stop settings in the Live Control Room before an unattended run. Confirm whether the stream should be public, unlisted, or private and what should happen when the encoder connects or disconnects. YouTube documents these controls in its encoder streaming setup guide.
- Keep the key out of public scripts, repositories, and logs. Restrict access to any file that stores it. If it is exposed, reset it in YouTube Studio before continuing.
Prepare an ordered playlist from the folder
Do not assume the server will enumerate files in the order you intend. Choose and sort the videos explicitly, then create a text file in FFmpeg concat format. For example, a playlist named playlist.txt can contain:
file '/srv/videos/film-01.mp4'
file '/srv/videos/film-02.mp4'
file '/srv/videos/film-03.mp4'
Use paths that exist on the server and quote or escape filenames containing special characters according to FFmpeg’s concat-demuxer rules. The FFmpeg concat demuxer documentation explains the playlist format and path-safety behavior. Test that every entry opens before setting the stream live.

Check whether stream copy is suitable
The concat demuxer reads files sequentially and adjusts timestamps, but stream-copy concatenation is not a universal solution for arbitrary folders. FFmpeg expects compatible streams across the files, including matching stream layouts, codecs, and time bases; inaccurate durations can also cause timestamp artifacts. Inspect representative files and the playlist before choosing stream copy. If codecs, resolutions, frame rates, pixel formats, or audio layouts differ, normalize or re-encode to a consistent output instead.
Choose YouTube-compatible output settings
YouTube’s current encoder guidance supports H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1 video; AAC or MP3 audio; up to 60 fps; constant bitrate encoding; and a recommended two-second keyframe interval, not exceeding four seconds. For a basic SDR stream, YouTube’s guidance includes Rec. 709 and 8-bit video. Do not apply HDR-specific settings to an SDR stream. Check the current YouTube encoder settings page for codec- and resolution-specific requirements.

| H.264 output example | Minimum bitrate | Recommended bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| 720p30 | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 1080p30 | 5 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
| 1080p60 | 6 Mbps | 17 Mbps |
These are YouTube’s published H.264 examples, not a guarantee that a particular server can sustain the rate. Pick a resolution and frame rate appropriate to the material, then leave about 20% network headroom above the stream bitrate, as YouTube recommends in its streaming tips. Measure the actual server’s route to the internet; a home or office speed test does not establish the remote host’s upload capacity.
Build and test the FFmpeg command
The command below shows the structure, not a guaranteed copy-and-run recipe. Replace the example URL, key, and encoding options with values for your channel and media. The infinite input-loop option belongs before the playlist input. The concat demuxer and input-loop options are documented in FFmpeg’s format documentation and FFmpeg’s command-line documentation.

-f flv 'rtmps://YOUTUBE_INGEST_URL/YOUR_STREAM_KEY'
This illustrative profile targets 720p30 only if the source and any scaling choices produce that output; it is not a substitute for inspecting the files or checking YouTube’s current settings. Set a two-second keyframe interval for the chosen frame rate (for example, 60 frames at 30 fps), keep bitrate behavior appropriate for constant-bitrate ingest, and use an output URL and key exactly as displayed in Studio. If the files are already compatible and you choose stream copy, replace the encoding options only after confirming that the resulting stream meets YouTube’s requirements; stream copy does not convert incompatible files into a consistent output.
- Run a short test with representative video and audio. Check transitions, picture, sound, bitrate, and timestamps.
- Start the encoder and wait for the incoming preview in Live Control Room. Confirm the watch page at the intended privacy setting and inspect stream health before treating the feed as live. YouTube recommends testing the encoder setup and preview in advance in its encoder setup guide.
- Verify the server’s outbound capacity while the stream is running and leave the recommended network headroom. If the feed drops or quality degrades, reduce output bitrate or resolution, or move to a server/network path that can sustain the selected profile.
- Only after the test succeeds should you configure unattended process supervision, alerting, and restart behavior.
Keep the stream running and recover from failures
A remote server removes dependence on a home computer staying powered on, but it does not by itself guarantee an uninterrupted YouTube session. YouTube advises monitoring audio and video quality and testing encoder failover; see its streaming tips. For an unattended setup, monitor at least the FFmpeg process, server disk space, playlist file availability, network connectivity, encoder errors, and whether the stream remains visible in Live Control Room. Configure a service manager or equivalent supervision to restart a failed process, and test recovery deliberately rather than assuming it works.

YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived in its encoder how-to. That guidance does not establish indefinite operation of one session or promise an archive for a session longer than 12 hours. For a continuous channel, define and test a session-rotation or restart policy and confirm the current behavior in Studio.

- YouTube receives no signal: Check that the server can reach the current ingest URL, that the stream key belongs to the selected Live Control Room stream, and that the key has no accidental whitespace or quoting errors. If a key may have been exposed, reset it and update the server configuration.
- The playlist stops at a file or fails to open: Confirm every path is valid and readable by the account running FFmpeg. Check concat-format quoting for spaces or special characters and test each file independently.
- Audio or video glitches at transitions: The files may have incompatible stream layouts, timestamps, or durations. Review FFmpeg’s concat compatibility requirements; normalize or re-encode the playlist to consistent streams rather than relying on stream copy.
- Buffering, dropped frames, or poor stream health: Compare the selected bitrate with stable outbound capacity from the server, allowing the recommended 20% headroom. Reduce bitrate, resolution, or frame rate if the server’s path cannot sustain the profile.
- The feed stops after running unattended: Check process logs, server restarts, disk exhaustion, missing files, and network loss. Add process supervision and an alert path, then test a restart and confirm the encoder reconnects in Live Control Room.
- The stream is live but not archived as expected: The stated automatic archive guidance applies to streams under 12 hours. Check session length and current Studio behavior; do not assume a longer session will be archived automatically.
