To publish it as a regular channel video, use the YouTube Data API. These are separate workflows; a normal video upload does not add a video to a live stream.
This guide covers both paths, with the live encoder workflow first. YouTube’s requirements and settings below were checked against its official documentation on October 3, 2026; labels and technical guidance can change.
Choose between a live feed and a channel video

For a documentary premiere or other event, choose the live path only if viewers should watch a live broadcast. If you simply want the video available on the channel, use the library upload path.
Send a prerecorded video from a VPS to YouTube Live
1. Confirm the channel can go live
YouTube requires a verified channel with no live-streaming restrictions during the previous 90 days. First-time live streaming enablement can take up to 24 hours, so check this before scheduling an event. See YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance.

2. Create or schedule the event
- Sign in to YouTube Studio and open Go Live.
- Create a stream or schedule one. Scheduling lets you share and promote the event in advance.
- Open the event in Live Control Room and locate its stream URL and stream key.
YouTube Help says, “Stream keys are like your YouTube stream’s password and address.” Keep the key private: anyone who obtains it may be able to send a feed to that stream. Use the event’s own URL and key in your encoder rather than reusing or sharing them casually. See YouTube’s encoder setup instructions.
3. Configure the VPS encoder
Install or configure encoder software on the VPS, then enter the Live Control Room’s server URL and stream key in the corresponding fields. Prefer RTMPS if the encoder supports it. RTMPS is RTMP carried over TLS/SSL; copy the RTMPS URL from Live Control Room rather than assuming an RTMP URL is secure. YouTube’s live encoder settings list supported protocols and settings.

- Video codec: H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1 are supported for RTMP/RTMPS ingest.
- Frame rate: YouTube’s guidance supports up to 60 fps.
- Rate control: YouTube recommends constant bitrate.
- Keyframes: Set a two-second interval; do not exceed four seconds.
- Audio: AAC or MP3.
- Bitrate: Select the recommendation for your codec, resolution, and frame rate from YouTube’s settings table. For H.264, YouTube lists these examples:

These are YouTube Help configuration recommendations, not a guarantee of picture quality or a measured VPS performance result. Check the current table for other codec, resolution, or frame-rate combinations. The VPS needs stable outbound capacity for the chosen bitrate; leave headroom rather than planning around a connection that only just matches it. See YouTube’s live encoder settings.
4. Start the feed, then the event
- Start the encoder sending the prerecorded video to the URL and key.
- Wait for the incoming feed to appear in the Live Control Room preview.
- Check the picture, sound, and stream-health indicators. Correct problems before the event begins.
- For a scheduled event, start it in Live Control Room when ready. Continue monitoring the feed while it runs.
YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not treat that as a substitute for retaining your original video or verifying the resulting archive. See YouTube’s live-stream setup guidance and encoder settings.

Upload a regular channel video from a VPS
For a video in the channel library rather than a live event, use the YouTube Data API’s `videos.insert` method with OAuth authorization. The method accepts video media up to 256 GB and can set video metadata. Google documents resumable uploads so an interrupted transfer can continue rather than requiring the entire file to be sent again.
Resumable upload outline
- Set up an API client and obtain OAuth authorization for the channel account.
- Initiate a resumable upload using `videos.insert`, including the intended metadata.
- Save the upload session URL returned by the API.
- Send the video media to that session. If the connection fails, query the session for the reported byte range and resume from there.
- Check the returned video resource and the video’s visibility in YouTube Studio.

Public-publishing caveat: YouTube says uploads through `videos.insert` from unverified API projects created after July 28, 2020 are restricted to private viewing until the project passes an audit. Confirm the project’s audit status and intended privacy before building a workflow that promises public publishing. See the API method documentation.
Protect the video and channel from avoidable problems
- Use material you have rights to stream. A stream key does not grant rights to a documentary, soundtrack, still image, or other included material. Check permissions and YouTube’s applicable copyright requirements before broadcasting.
- Do not assume a live broadcast guarantees monetization. YouTube applies its channel and content policies separately from whether a stream technically works.
- Test with the intended file and settings. Verify audio levels, aspect ratio, and that the complete file plays as expected before a promoted event.
- Keep credentials private. Store API OAuth credentials and live stream keys securely; do not place them in public scripts, logs, or shared configuration.
Troubleshoot the common failures

| Video drops frames or stream health deteriorates | Compare the encoder’s selected bitrate with the stable outbound capacity available from the VPS. Lower the bitrate or resolution to a supported recommendation if the connection cannot sustain it; check the encoder’s output and stream-health indicators. |
