For a simple prerecorded YouTube Live loop on a computer you can leave running, OBS is usually the easier starting point. Add the video as a Media Source and turn on Loop. Choose FFmpeg if you prefer command-line control over media input, processing and output. If you do not want the stream running on your everyday computer, consider a VPS or a cloud service instead.
How to choose between OBS and FFmpeg
The main difference is how you configure and run the stream—not a proven difference in uptime. OBS offers a graphical scene workflow; FFmpeg uses command-line options to read, process and send media. Your choice depends on how you prefer to work, whether the stream needs other visual sources, and where the process will run.
| Option | Best fit | What it offers | What to account for |
|---|---|---|---|
| OBS Media Source | You want a graphical setup, possibly with scenes or additional sources. | A local video source with a Loop control, plus playback and hardware-decoding settings. | The computer and OBS session need to remain available. No comparative reliability test establishes how OBS performs against FFmpeg. |
| FFmpeg | You are comfortable configuring media from a terminal. | Flexible input, filtering or transcoding, and output to a chosen destination. | The right configuration depends on the file’s streams, encoding choices and destination requirements. A command that works for one setup may not suit another. |
| VPS running FFmpeg | You want FFmpeg to run on a remote server and can manage hosting. | Moves the process off your everyday computer. | You must select and maintain hosting. Actual costs and operational reliability depend on the provider and setup; they are not established by the comparison here. |
| Cloud-hosted looping service | You would rather delegate hosting and stream operation. | A provider runs the loop in the cloud. | Check the provider’s current terms and capabilities. A vendor’s description is not an independent uptime or cost study. |
Set up a loop in OBS
OBS’s Media Source supports common local video formats and has an explicit Loop property. The OBS Project documentation says Loop is off by default. For a one-file loop, the essential setup is to add the source, choose the file and enable that property.
- Add the source: In OBS, select or create the scene for the stream, use the Sources panel’s add control, and choose Media Source.
- Select the recording: In the Media Source properties, choose the local video file. Confirm that the preview shows the expected image and that audio is present if the clip has sound.
- Enable the repeat: Turn on Loop. The file should start again when playback reaches its end.
- Choose playback behavior: Restart playback when source becomes active restarts the clip when the source is activated. For an always-visible source, Show nothing when playback ends can prevent a still frame from remaining visible if looping is off or playback ends for another reason.
- Test before going live: Play through the end of the file and confirm it starts again, with the intended picture and audio. If you use other scene elements, check that the video remains visible in the scene you plan to stream.
The OBS Project’s Media Sources documentation, published January 11, 2022, describes these controls. Check the current OBS interface and documentation if a label or option differs in your installed version.

Use FFmpeg when you want command-line control
FFmpeg is a command-line media tool. Its documentation describes it as “a universal media converter”; in practice, it reads inputs, can filter or transcode media, and writes to configured outputs. Its documentation also covers streaming and loop-related features, but a correct command depends on the input file and destination.
- Inspect the file: Identify its video and audio streams, codecs, frame size and frame rate. These determine whether the file can be sent as-is or needs processing.
- Configure repetition: Choose an input or processing approach that repeats the media. Verify its behavior with your FFmpeg build and file rather than assuming a loop option behaves identically in every arrangement.
- Choose the output: Set the encoding and output format to match the current requirements of the destination. Transcoding may be needed if the input is not suitable as-is.
- Route it to the live ingest: Configure the destination URL and stream key using the current instructions in YouTube Studio. Treat the key as a secret; anyone who obtains it may be able to broadcast to your channel.
- Test the complete path: Check the stream’s picture, audio and repeat behavior before relying on it for a long broadcast. Watch for process errors and confirm YouTube is receiving the intended output.
There is no single untested FFmpeg command that can be recommended as universally reliable here. FFmpeg options and behavior can vary by build, and the appropriate encoding and ingest settings depend on the file and YouTube’s current requirements. Consult the documentation for your installed build and YouTube Studio’s current live-stream guidance before configuring an RTMP output.

When the stream should run away from your computer
OBS and local FFmpeg both rely on the machine running the software remaining available. A VPS moves that responsibility to a server you administer; a hosted service delegates it to a provider. The practical trade-off is whether you want to maintain a remote environment yourself or use a managed service. Neither option can be ranked for uptime from the available evidence.
Or let it run in the cloud
StreamNeo is a cloud service for keeping a YouTube channel live from uploaded videos: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It loops uploaded video in the cloud, so your computer and home connection do not need to stay on. StreamNeo is for YouTube streams, not camera broadcasts or other platforms.

Check current YouTube policies for your situation.

Troubleshoot a loop that will not work
- The OBS clip stops at the end: Open the Media Source properties and confirm Loop is enabled; OBS documents it as off by default.
- The picture is blank or the wrong file plays: Recheck the Media Source file selection and preview the chosen local file before streaming.
- The clip restarts unexpectedly: Check whether Restart playback when source becomes active is enabled and whether your scene or source is being deactivated and reactivated.
- FFmpeg reports errors or YouTube does not receive the stream: Verify the input streams, the options supported by your installed build, the configured output destination and the current ingest details in YouTube Studio. Do not assume an example command for a different file or build will work unchanged.
- The broadcast ends when you leave: If the stream runs locally, the computer and streaming process must remain available. Move the process to a VPS you manage or use a cloud-hosted service if you need it to run away from that computer.
- The stream is interrupted by a rights or policy issue: Review the video and audio rights and check YouTube’s current live-stream and monetization policies. A looping setup does not override those rules.
