For a standard OBS stream to YouTube Live, choose CBR (constant bitrate). YouTube’s live encoder settings specify CBR. Set your bitrate separately to suit your resolution, frame rate, codec and stable upload capacity.
Why CBR is the right choice for YouTube Live
YouTube’s official live encoder settings specify “Bitrate encoding: CBR.” That makes CBR the platform-aligned rate-control choice for a typical OBS stream sent to YouTube.
VBR (variable bitrate) may appear among the options for an encoder, but an available encoder feature is not the same as YouTube’s recommendation. OBS’s NVENC documentation explains that its maxBitRate option is used for VBR and ignored in CBR mode. That describes an NVENC-specific behavior; it does not establish a universal quality comparison between CBR and VBR or apply identically to every OBS encoder.
Choose rate control and bitrate separately
Rate control determines how the encoder manages bitrate. The bitrate value itself is a separate choice: YouTube’s recommendations vary according to codec, output resolution and frame rate. For H.264, the current YouTube Help table lists these examples (accessed in 2026; the page does not state a publication date):

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
| H.264 output | YouTube recommended bitrate |
|---|---|
| 720p at 60 fps | 8 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 17 Mbps |
These are recommendations for the listed H.264 modes, not universal bitrates for every stream. Check YouTube’s encoder settings table for your chosen codec and output mode rather than copying one number across resolutions or frame rates.
Set up OBS for a YouTube stream
- Select CBR in the stream encoder settings. In OBS, open the output settings for the encoder you selected and set its rate-control mode to CBR. The exact label and available options depend on the encoder and OBS version; YouTube specifies the desired mode, but the reviewed guidance does not establish one menu path for every setup.
- Choose a bitrate for your output. Use YouTube’s recommendation for the codec, resolution and frame rate you will stream. Keep the combined stream bitrate within your stable upload capacity.
- Set a two-second keyframe interval. YouTube recommends two seconds and says not to exceed four seconds.
- Use RTMPS when configuring transport. YouTube recommends RTMPS, the secure extension of RTMP. Transport and rate control are separate settings: RTMPS does not replace the CBR choice.
- Run a representative test and monitor stream health. Include audio and movement similar to the actual show, then check YouTube’s stream-health messages during the test and event.

Check upload headroom before going live
The upload speed that matters is stable capacity, not just a peak result from a speed test. YouTube recommends leaving 20% of upload bandwidth unused. Make sure the total stream bitrate fits within your available upload bandwidth with that headroom, especially if other devices or apps will use the connection.
If the stream has connection problems, OBS’s connection troubleshooting guidance recommends considering a lower video bitrate. Re-test under conditions similar to the live event rather than assuming a brief successful test guarantees a stable show.

Common CBR and bitrate problems
- OBS offers VBR, so you are unsure which to select: select CBR for a standard YouTube Live stream, following YouTube’s encoder guidance. Encoder options do not override the platform recommendation.
- The stream drops frames or struggles to stay connected: check that your stable upload capacity can support the total stream bitrate while leaving YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom. If needed, lower the video bitrate and test again.
- Your bitrate seems too low or unnecessarily high: confirm the codec, resolution and frame rate, then consult YouTube’s matching recommendation. The H.264 figures for 720p60 and 1080p60 are not interchangeable or general settings for other modes.
- You changed RTMP to RTMPS but still need a rate-control setting: configure CBR separately; transport protocol and encoder rate control solve different setup questions.
- A test looks stable, but the real stream behaves differently: make the test resemble the planned show in audio and movement, and keep monitoring YouTube’s stream-health messages during the event.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep uploaded videos looping on a YouTube channel 24/7, StreamNeo is a different option from running a live OBS session: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. StreamNeo loops the uploaded video from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. It streams the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo for details, or start your free day.
