To stream continuously in 1080p, configure an encoder for 1920×1080, choose 30 or 60 frames per second, use YouTube’s recommended bitrate for your codec, set constant bitrate (CBR) and a 2-second keyframe interval, and provide stable upload bandwidth with headroom. Then test the whole chain—including source playback, audio, network recovery and local recording—before relying on it. You can run an encoder on an always-on computer, use standalone hardware, or use a cloud service to loop uploaded videos. YouTube does not guarantee uninterrupted operation, and a stream longer than 12 hours may not be captured as a replay.
Choose how to keep the channel live
YouTube accepts streams from encoder software running on a computer or from standalone encoding hardware; it does not require one particular encoder model. The encoder sends a live feed to YouTube, which then transcodes it into formats for viewers. Your 1080p setting describes the feed you send, not a guarantee that every viewer will receive 1080p on every device or network.
| Workflow | Best suited to | What to evaluate |
|---|---|---|
| Software encoder on an always-on computer | Flexible production using a computer you already have | Sustained encoding load, source playback, cooling, power, network stability and restart recovery. YouTube does not specify a universal CPU or GPU requirement. |
| Standalone hardware encoder | A dedicated encoding setup | Inputs, supported codecs and resolutions, network connections, recovery behavior and cost. Hardware is optional, not a universal requirement. |
| Cloud service for prerecorded video | Automated looping without leaving a local encoding computer running | Media workflow, scheduling, service limits, control, reliability and current pricing. YouTube’s verified encoder list identifies Gyre as a cloud-based 24/7 streaming tool; that listing is not an endorsement or confirmation of current terms. |
| In-camera app | Continuous streaming directly from supported camera hardware | Camera compatibility, source format, power, network and automation controls. YouTube’s verified list identifies CamStreamer as an Axis camera application for continuous or scheduled streams. |
YouTube also lists AWS Elemental MediaLive as a verified encoder for broadcast-grade live video processing; the listing does not mean a simple 1080p channel needs it. See YouTube’s encoder setup guidance for the platform’s descriptions and verified list.
Prepare channel access and the stream
- Confirm eligibility early. YouTube says live streaming requires a verified channel with no live-stream restrictions in the prior 90 days. First-time activation can take up to 24 hours, so enable it before your planned launch. See YouTube live streaming tips.
- Choose the source and workflow. Decide whether you are encoding a camera or produced feed, looping prerecorded media, or streaming from supported camera hardware. For a continuous prerecorded channel, make sure the chosen workflow handles what happens when a file or playlist ends.
- Create or schedule the live stream in YouTube Studio. Follow the current Manage live stream settings guidance for stream setup. Copy the stream key into the encoder’s stream settings and keep it private: anyone who obtains it may be able to send a feed to your stream. Use the encoder connection settings YouTube provides rather than guessing a server address.
- Set the encoder and send a test feed. Apply the resolution, frame rate, codec, bitrate and keyframe settings below. Preview the incoming picture and audio in Live Control Room before making the event public.
Set 1080p resolution, frame rate and bitrate
YouTube’s current live encoder settings distinguish both codec and frame rate. These are recommended ingestion bitrates, not guarantees of picture quality or reliability.

| Codec | 1080p30 recommended bitrate | 1080p60 recommended bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| H.264 | 14 Mbps | 17 Mbps |
| AV1 or H.265 (HEVC) | 10 Mbps | 12 Mbps |
These figures are YouTube’s recommendations on its live encoder settings, bitrates and resolutions page, accessed in 2026. Do not mix them up with recommendations for uploading a prerecorded video file: this table concerns live ingestion.
Choose 30 or 60 fps
Use 30 fps for a mostly static scene or a modest-motion loop when that matches the source. Choose 60 fps if motion benefits from smoother movement and your encoder and connection can sustain the corresponding bitrate. That is practical guidance based on YouTube’s separate recommendations, not a platform requirement.

Use compatible encoding settings
- Set the video frame size to 1920Ă—1080 and use progressive scan for ordinary SDR.
- Select a supported video codec: H.264, H.265 (HEVC) or AV1. Availability depends on the encoder and workflow.
- Set bitrate control to CBR (constant bitrate).
- Set the keyframe interval to 2 seconds. YouTube recommends two seconds and says keyframes should be no more than 4 seconds apart.
- Use RTMPS if your encoder supports it; YouTube recommends the encrypted extension to RTMP.
- For ordinary SDR, use Rec. 709. YouTube’s page also gives audio guidance, including AAC or MP3 and 128 kbps stereo audio.
Check the YouTube settings page for the complete codec and signal guidance, especially if your source uses HDR or nonstandard audio.
Allow enough upload bandwidth
YouTube recommends leaving 20% of available upload capacity unused relative to the total bitrate being sent. Measure upload, not download: a fast download result does not show whether your connection can reliably send the stream. YouTube puts it plainly: “The total bitrate you’re streaming cannot exceed the amount of upload bandwidth available.” See YouTube’s streaming tips.

| Example stream | YouTube recommended video bitrate | Minimum capacity using 20% headroom |
|---|---|---|
| H.264 1080p30 | 14 Mbps | 16.8 Mbps |
| H.264 1080p60 | 17 Mbps | 20.4 Mbps |
The capacity examples are arithmetic applications of YouTube’s 20% guidance and bitrate recommendations, not separately published YouTube figures. Leave additional room for other upload traffic. If you send a backup stream as well, include its bitrate in the total; YouTube’s guidance says to account for both primary and backup. Prefer a stable connection, avoid saturating the uplink, and test at a time when normal household or workplace traffic is present.
Test the full chain and plan recovery
- Test representative content. Send a private or unlisted test with movement and audio similar to the real program. A static test image may not reveal problems that appear with motion or sound.
- Check the preview and health messages. In Live Control Room, verify that the event is accessible from the channel and watch pages and watch for stream-health warnings. YouTube advises setting up ahead of time and previewing before going live.
- Check local recording if you need a backup copy. Verify that the archive file is growing and that it plays. A local recording can preserve the program, but it does not keep the YouTube feed online.
- Exercise failover if you have it. YouTube recommends testing a backup setup by stopping the primary encoder or disconnecting its Ethernet cable, then checking that the player rolls over to the backup.
- Decide how the system responds to interruptions. Plan for source-file completion, encoder or computer restart, power loss, network interruption and YouTube ingest errors. No single watchdog or redundancy design fits every workflow; test your actual recovery steps rather than assuming a restart will happen.
Continuous availability depends on the encoder, power, network, source media and monitoring. YouTube’s settings are guidance, not a promise of uninterrupted service.

Separate 24/7 availability from replay preservation
YouTube warns: “If your stream exceeds 12 hours, it may not be captured at all.” A live channel that stays online and a complete replay are separate goals. If preserving the whole program matters, record locally and consider ending and restarting planned shorter sessions. Those breaks interrupt literal continuity, and a local archive should be checked rather than assumed to be intact. Read YouTube’s archive live streams guidance.

Quick Recap
Troubleshoot common 1080p stream problems
| Symptom | Likely checks and fixes |
|---|---|
| Stream will not start | Confirm live streaming is enabled for the channel, allow for first-time activation, and recheck the stream key and connection details in YouTube Studio and the encoder. Do not expose the key publicly. |
| Health warnings, dropped frames or interruptions | Check outbound upload capacity and competing traffic. Compare total stream bitrate with the available upload bandwidth, including any backup stream, and retest on a stable connection. |
| Video stutters or looks poor | Confirm the output is 1920Ă—1080, the intended frame rate and the codec-appropriate bitrate. Verify CBR and the 2-second keyframe interval; test with representative motion. |
| Audio is missing or out of sync | Check the encoder’s selected audio input, codec and channel settings; monitor the preview with sound before the event. YouTube’s cited guidance includes AAC or MP3 and 128 kbps stereo. |
| Feed stops when a video ends or the computer restarts | Check playlist behavior and configure the local encoder or source workflow to resume after completion or restart. Test the recovery path before depending on continuous operation. |
| Live stream exists but replay is missing or incomplete | Streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured. Record locally and verify the file, or schedule shorter sessions if a YouTube replay is important. |
