To resume a prerecorded YouTube livestream after a server reboot, make the encoder start automatically at boot—not just reconnect after a network hiccup. On a Linux server, a common DIY approach is to run FFmpeg as a systemd service configured to start on boot and restart after an unexpected exit. You must also make sure the service can access the video and YouTube stream key, and verify how the scheduled broadcast handles encoder restarts.
Why a reboot needs a different fix from a dropped connection
A reconnect option can help when the network drops but the encoder process remains running. A server reboot stops that process altogether. Recovery therefore requires the operating system to launch the encoder again after boot, with its media and configuration available. OBS’s troubleshooting guidance discusses dropped frames and intermittent disconnections as possible network problems; it does not say that reconnect settings restart an encoder after a full reboot.
YouTube documents how to connect an encoder to a live stream, but does not prescribe how to configure a server to recover after reboot. A FFmpeg service managed by systemd is one possible Linux implementation, not a YouTube guarantee. The exact service configuration depends on your operating system, FFmpeg build, media, and channel settings.
Prepare the YouTube broadcast and encoder
- Create or select the event. In YouTube Studio, create a stream or select a scheduled stream in Live Control Room. Scheduling lets you promote an event and share its watch page ahead of time. Follow the current Live Control Room workflow for your event.
- Copy the ingest URL and stream key. Add both to the encoder configuration. YouTube describes the stream key as a password: keep it private. If you reset the key, update the encoder configuration too.
- Decide how the event should start and stop. Review auto-start and auto-stop in the stream settings. YouTube says that when these settings are on, streaming can be started or stopped from the encoder. Choose settings that fit your unattended workflow, then verify what happens for your channel and event in Live Control Room.
- Check the scheduled-stream workflow. YouTube’s guide describes starting the encoder, waiting for the preview, and then clicking “Go live.” Do not assume that restarting the encoder automatically recreates or resumes the same event.
- Confirm the encoder can run unattended. Ensure the service account can read the media file and configuration and that the host can reach the network and YouTube ingest after boot. Check the service logs and Live Control Room preview before relying on unattended operation.
Run FFmpeg under a boot-enabled service
On Linux, systemd can launch a process at boot and supervise it. A surfaced open-source project, YouTube-AutoEncoder, illustrates using FFmpeg with systemd; treat its commands and unit file as an implementation example, not a universal configuration. No reboot test is claimed here. Adapt and validate the service against your host, FFmpeg build, media, and YouTube event rather than copying a unit file blindly.

Make the service persistent
Configure the operating-system service to start at boot, rather than launching FFmpeg only from an interactive shell. Set its working directory and media path explicitly, and ensure the service account has permission to read the video and configuration. Store the stream key so it is accessible to the service but not exposed unnecessarily in shared logs or files.
Set a controlled restart policy
Configure the service to restart after an unexpected encoder exit. Use a delay or rate limit appropriate to your deployment so a bad media path, invalid key, or other persistent error does not create a rapid failure loop. A restart policy handles process exits; it cannot correct the underlying configuration or guarantee that YouTube will attach the restarted encoder to the intended event.

Wait for network availability
Make startup resilient to the network not being ready at the instant the server boots. If FFmpeg repeatedly exits or cannot connect, investigate DNS, firewall rules, outbound ingest connectivity, and server load, as well as the service logs. The precise networking and service dependencies depend on the host.
Verify recovery with a controlled reboot
- Confirm the service is enabled for boot and that the media, working directory, permissions, and configuration are available to its service account.
- Reboot the server during a planned test. After boot, inspect the service state and logs to confirm FFmpeg started and is not repeatedly failing.
- Check the Live Control Room preview and stream health, then check the viewer-facing stream. Confirm whether the event is live and behaving as intended; do not infer successful recovery from a running FFmpeg process alone.
- Verify the result for your own channel and scheduled-event settings before depending on unattended operation. No test has been performed for this article.
Understand what happens to the YouTube archive
YouTube Help says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That archive rule does not establish that every restarted encoder will seamlessly resume the same event or preserve one continuous archive. Follow YouTube’s instructions to stop sending content or end the stream in Live Control Room according to your workflow, and check the current behavior for the specific interruption and event configuration.

Choose between a self-managed server and a hosted service
A server service gives you direct access to encoder arguments, media files, and logs, but you configure and monitor boot and restart behavior yourself. A hosted service may reduce the host maintenance you manage; verify its documentation for the exact YouTube scheduled-stream and restart behavior you need.
