To add background music to an FFmpeg YouTube loop stream, loop the video and music as separate inputs, then either route the music as the output audio or mix it with the video’s existing audio using amix. Map the intended video and audio streams explicitly, encode for the YouTube ingestion protocol selected for your stream key, and confirm you have rights to broadcast the music.
Choose how the video and music should loop
FFmpeg offers input-level looping and filter-based looping. Repeating a whole file is usually the simplest approach; filters suit workflows where looping belongs inside a media graph or only a segment should repeat. Keep the video loop and audio loop conceptually separate: you can repeat the whole video input and independently repeat the music input.
| Choice | When it fits | What to account for |
|---|---|---|
-stream_loop -1 before an input |
Repeat an entire video or music file. | Check timestamps and stream behavior for your target output. |
Video loop filter |
Repeat decoded frames in a filtergraph or loop a frame segment. | Set the frame count and start point, and manage the graph’s output duration. |
Audio aloop filter |
Repeat a decoded audio sample segment. | The filter’s size controls the maximum number of samples in the loop; choose it deliberately. A loop point can create an audible seam if the source was not prepared to repeat cleanly. |
FFmpeg documents loop=-1 for infinite video-filter looping and infinite audio looping. See the FFmpeg filters documentation and FFmpeg command-line documentation.
Decide whether to replace or mix the video’s audio
Use music alone
If the video is silent or you want to replace its sound, map the music input’s audio stream to the output instead of mapping the video’s audio. For a complete music file, repeat that input with -stream_loop -1 before its -i option. If looping only a section, use aloop with a meaningful sample count; consult the filter’s local help for the options and values available in your FFmpeg build.

Keep the original sound under the music
Use amix to combine the video audio and music. Specify how many inputs to mix, what happens when one input ends, the relative weights, and whether normalization is enabled. Normalization is enabled by default; disabling it can cause heavy clipping if levels are not managed. Weights are a starting point, not a reliable substitute for listening and checking levels. FFmpeg’s example of music at one-quarter weight is illustrative, not a universal level recommendation. See the documentation for amix.
Starting FFmpeg command for a video with existing audio
This illustrative command assumes input 0 is a video with an audio stream and input 1 is a music file. It repeats both complete inputs and mixes their audio. Replace the example destination with the RTMP or RTMPS ingest URL and stream key from your YouTube Live setup; never publish a real key in an article, command shared publicly, or log.

ffmpeg -stream_loop -1 -re -i loop.mp4 -stream_loop -1 -re -i music.mp3
-filter_complex "[0:a][1:a]amix=inputs=2:duration=first:weights='1 0.25':normalize=1[aout]"
-map 0:v:0 -map "[aout]"
-c:v libx264 -preset veryfast -c:a aac -b:a 128k
-f flv "rtmp://SERVER/STREAM_KEY"
This is a starting pattern, not a copy-and-run guarantee: the command has not been executed or validated here. Confirm the inputs’ actual stream layouts, your local FFmpeg build, the selected YouTube protocol, and the stream URL and key. The example uses an RTMP-style FLV destination; YouTube recommends RTMPS for secure RTMP ingestion. FFmpeg describes filtergraphs that combine multiple inputs as complex filtergraphs and supports manual stream mapping in its command-line documentation.
Adapt it for silent video or music-only audio
If the video has no audio stream, the reference to [0:a] will fail. Remove it from the mix and map the music audio instead—for example, use -map 0:v:0 -map 1:a:0 when the whole music input is repeated. If you want music alone even though the video has sound, likewise map the music stream rather than building the two-input mix. Verify the stream indices with your local files before starting.

Match the output to YouTube Live
Use the settings for the ingestion protocol chosen for your stream key; do not assume one codec or bitrate is right for every resolution, frame rate, or protocol. YouTube’s current encoder guidance lists H.264, H.265, and AV1 video codecs and AAC or MP3 audio codecs for RTMP/RTMPS. It calls for constant bitrate (CBR), recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds, and supports up to 60 fps. Its advanced stereo RTMP/RTMPS audio settings specify 44.1 kHz and 128 kbps. These are YouTube recommendations and settings, not performance measurements. Review YouTube’s encoder settings guidance for the current requirements and protocol-specific details.
The sample command uses H.264 via libx264 and AAC audio, but it does not specify every setting YouTube recommends. Check your encoder configuration against YouTube’s current guidance and the target format, then test before going live. YouTube recommends using representative video and audio in a test and monitoring stream health and messages during the event; see its live encoder guidance.

Clear music rights before broadcasting
A file that FFmpeg can read is not automatically safe to stream. YouTube scans live streams for third-party content. If it identifies such content, it may show a placeholder and warning; if the content remains, YouTube may temporarily interrupt or terminate the stream.
YouTube also warns: “If your channel isn’t added to their allowlist, your live stream can be interrupted even if you’ve licensed the third-party content.” Confirm with the rights owner that the license covers live streaming, the intended territories, any archived copy, and any required Content ID allowlisting. Read YouTube’s guidance on copyright issues with live streams. YouTube’s live-stream terms state that the provider represents and warrants they have necessary rights for live content, including music licensing rights from artists, record labels, publishers (including public performance licenses), and other royalty participants.

Troubleshoot common problems
- FFmpeg reports that audio stream 0:a is missing: The video may be silent or its audio stream may be laid out differently. Inspect the input streams, remove the missing stream from the filtergraph, and map the music audio directly if it should be the only output audio.
- The music plays but the original audio does not: The command may map only the music, or the mix graph may not include the video’s actual audio stream. Check input stream indices and the filtergraph labels.
- The mix clips or sounds harsh: Reduce the levels or weights and listen to the combined output. Do not disable
amixnormalization without managing levels; FFmpeg warns that this can cause heavy clipping. - The audio ends while the video continues: Check whether the music input is actually being repeated and whether the mix’s duration behavior matches the input lengths. For a complete music file, place
-stream_loop -1before that input. - YouTube rejects the stream or reports poor health: Confirm that the output protocol matches the stream key, the URL and key are correct, and the codec and encoder settings match YouTube’s current protocol guidance. Test with representative audio and video, then monitor YouTube’s health messages.
- The stream is interrupted after music is detected: Recheck the license, territories, archive permissions, and whether the channel must be allowlisted by the rights owner. A license alone may not prevent Content ID interruption.
