You can loop a local video indefinitely with FFmpeg on a Raspberry Pi 4 and send it to YouTube Live, provided the Pi can sustain your chosen encoding settings and your internet connection can hold the upload. For a single file, FFmpeg’s documented pattern is -stream_loop -1 -i input.mp4. For a playlist, first choose a playlist method compatible with your files; looping one input does not automatically combine an arbitrary set of files.

What you need before you start

  • A Raspberry Pi 4 Model B running Raspberry Pi OS, with local storage for the media files.
  • A USB-C power supply rated at 5 V and 3 A (15 W), the supply rating specified by Raspberry Pi for the Pi 4 Model B. Raspberry Pi getting-started documentation
  • A stable internet connection with enough upload capacity for the stream settings you select. Test from the connection and location where the Pi will run; national or advertised speeds do not establish your actual sustained upload.
  • Video and audio you have permission to broadcast, and a YouTube channel with live streaming available.

Wired Ethernet is a practical option where available, but it does not guarantee a stable stream. The power rating is a documented requirement; no particular storage-card capacity or India-specific network speed is established here.

Install FFmpeg and check your build

Install FFmpeg through the package source appropriate to your Raspberry Pi OS installation, then check what is available before selecting codecs or assuming the Pi can encode a particular resolution:

  1. ffmpeg -version displays the installed FFmpeg version and build configuration.
  2. ffmpeg -encoders lists encoders included in that build. Check for the video and audio encoders your command will use.
  3. Use media representative of the real playlist for a test. A command that is syntactically valid does not establish that the Pi can encode it in real time.

FFmpeg options generally apply to the next input or output, so their order matters. The -stream_loop option must appear before the input it loops. See the FFmpeg documentation.

Replace input.mp4 with your file and supply the output options and YouTube ingest URL described below. The bracketed text is explanatory, not literal command syntax. This repeats that input; it does not create transitions between different files.

Several files in sequence

For separate clips, use a playlist or concat method that matches the files and the behavior you want. FFmpeg does not have one universal command that makes every arbitrary playlist format loop seamlessly. A concat-based list is one possible approach, but it requires compatible inputs and a specific list format; stream-copying mismatched codecs or parameters may fail, while re-encoding increases the Pi’s workload. Confirm the format and options against the FFmpeg documentation for your installed build, and test the full sequence before relying on it. Do not assume that adding -stream_loop -1 to a playlist file will loop any playlist format.

If your media differs in resolution, frame rate, codecs, or audio layout, decide whether to normalize it before streaming or encode it during playback. That choice affects compatibility and processing demand. No source establishes a guaranteed Pi 4 maximum resolution or performance for this workflow.

Create the YouTube Live stream and protect its key

  1. Open YouTube Studio and create or select the live stream. Follow YouTube’s encoder setup instructions.
  2. Copy the stream server URL and stream key from YouTube Studio into FFmpeg’s output configuration. Use RTMPS when YouTube provides it; YouTube recommends RTMPS as the secure ingest option.
  3. Treat the stream key like a password. Anyone who obtains it may be able to send video to that stream. Do not publish it in a script repository, screenshot, or public terminal log; rotate it in Studio if exposed.
  4. Start FFmpeg and check the incoming preview and stream-health messages in YouTube Live Control Room. Start or confirm the broadcast there as required by the stream workflow.

First-time live streaming activation may take up to 24 hours, according to YouTube’s encoder setup help; it is a possible wait, not a guaranteed activation time.

Select an ingest bitrate and test the Pi

YouTube’s H.264 recommendations give these two common 30 fps targets:

Target YouTube-recommended video bitrate What to consider
720p30 3–8 Mbps Requires less upload capacity than the 1080p30 range; choose a value your actual connection can sustain.
1080p30 5–14 Mbps Needs more upload capacity; use only if the source, connection, and Pi’s processing path remain stable.

These are YouTube ingest recommendations, not measurements of a Raspberry Pi 4 or guarantees about an Indian ISP. YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR), a keyframe every two seconds (no longer than four seconds), and AAC or MP3 audio for RTMP/RTMPS. Consult YouTube’s encoder settings for its current guidance.

Anker USB C Hub, 5-in-1 USBC to HDMI Splitter with 4K Display
  • 5-in-1 Connectivity: Equipped with a 4K HDMI port, a 5 Gbps USB-C data port, two 5 Gbps USB-A ports, and a USB C 100W PD-IN port. Note: The USB C 100W PD-IN port supports only charging and does not support data transfer devices such as headphones or speakers.
  • Powerful Pass-Through Charging: Supports up to 85W pass-through charging so you can power up your laptop while you use the hub. Note: Pass-through charging requires a charger (not included). Note: To achieve full power for iPad, we recommend using a 45W wall charger.
  • Transfer Files in Seconds: Move files to and from your laptop at speeds of up to 5 Gbps via the USB-C and USB-A data ports. Note: The USB C 5Gbps Data port does not support video output.
  • HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
  • What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
  1. Begin at the lower end of the bitrate range appropriate to your target, rather than assuming a line’s advertised upload speed is continuously available to the stream.
  2. Run the actual playlist with representative motion and audio. Watch YouTube stream health and check the Pi for dropped frames, delayed encoding, or other signs it cannot keep up.
  3. If the upload or encoder is unstable, reduce bitrate or resolution, or simplify the encoding workload. Change one variable at a time and repeat the test.
  4. Run a longer trial before scheduling continuous playback. A short successful preview does not prove that the connection, power, or Pi will remain reliable indefinitely.

Troubleshoot common failures

  • YouTube shows no incoming stream: Check that FFmpeg is running, the server URL and key are copied correctly, and the key belongs to the selected live stream. Confirm live streaming is enabled for the channel; first-time activation can take up to 24 hours.
  • FFmpeg rejects an option or encoder: Check option placement and spelling, then inspect ffmpeg -version and ffmpeg -encoders. The installed build may not include the encoder your command requests.
  • The stream buffers or health worsens: Compare the chosen bitrate with sustained upload capacity on the Pi’s actual connection. Lower the bitrate or resolution and test again; YouTube’s recommended ranges are not a promise of your available bandwidth.
  • The video falls behind or frames drop: The Pi may not keep up with the selected encoding path, especially if it must re-encode the media. Try a lighter workload or lower target and monitor another representative test. There is no established universal Pi 4 performance ceiling for this exact workflow.
  • A playlist stops at the end or clips fail between items: Verify that the chosen playlist/concat method is supported and that its file paths and media compatibility are correct. The single-file loop option alone does not define how multiple clips are joined.
  • Audio is missing or rejected: Check that the input contains the intended audio stream and that the output uses a supported audio codec such as AAC or MP3 for RTMP/RTMPS.
  • The stream key may have been exposed: Replace or reset it in YouTube Studio, then update the FFmpeg configuration. Avoid sharing the new key in logs or screenshots.

Check rights and channel status

Use recordings whose rights permit live broadcast. A valid FFmpeg command and successful ingest do not determine whether you have permission to stream the playlist, whether YouTube will allow a particular use, or whether the channel qualifies for every live feature. Check the current status and notices in YouTube Studio; rights and eligibility depend on the channel and media.

Or let it run in the cloud

If you want a 24/7 YouTube stream of uploaded videos without leaving the Pi—or another computer—running at home, StreamNeo is a cloud alternative. Upload the recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. StreamNeo loops uploaded videos from the cloud, not a live camera feed.

  • Nothing has to stay on at home; the stream runs in the cloud.
  • Uploaded quality is kept as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot, with no quality tiers.
  • Automatic recovery is provided if YouTube drops the stream.
  • The first day is free with no card required. Monthly billing is $9.99 per month.
