Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →To connect a VPS encoder to YouTube, copy the stream URL and stream key from YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, enter them in the matching fields in your encoder, and start sending video. For a scheduled event, wait for the preview and then select Go live. The key connects the feed; it does not keep the encoder running or make a VPS stream reliably recover after a failure.
Before you connect the VPS
- Confirm that your channel is eligible to livestream and is not restricted. YouTube says a channel restricted from live streaming cannot use another channel to livestream on YouTube; check current eligibility and limits in YouTube’s live-streaming requirements.
- Have an encoder running on the VPS and know how it expects the server URL and stream key to be entered. Some encoders offer a YouTube preset; others use separate URL and key fields.
- Decide whether you are starting an encoder stream now or preparing a scheduled event. YouTube’s stream feed and viewer-facing broadcast are separate concepts, so creating a key does not itself create or start a scheduled broadcast.
Create a stream and get its URL and key
- In YouTube Studio, select Create > Go Live.
- For an immediate encoder stream, open the Stream tab and create a stream if one is not already available. For a planned event, use Manage > Schedule stream.
- Open the stream’s settings and copy both the Stream URL and Stream key. YouTube describes stream keys as “like your YouTube stream’s password and address.” Treat the key as a credential: do not post it, include it in a public script, or share it with anyone who should not control your stream. See Manage live stream settings.
Enter the details in the VPS encoder
- Open the encoder configuration on the VPS and find its YouTube, server URL, or ingest settings.
- Paste YouTube’s Stream URL into the encoder’s server or URL field. Paste the Stream key into its stream-key field. If the encoder uses a single combined field or a YouTube preset, follow that encoder’s format rather than appending the key to the URL unless its instructions require it.
- Use the RTMPS URL copied from Live Control Room when the encoder supports RTMPS. YouTube may show an ordinary RTMP URL by default; its guidance explains how to retrieve the RTMPS URL. RTMPS is RTMP carried over TLS/SSL, and YouTube recommends it where supported. See Encrypt your stream using RTMPS.
- Configure the encoder’s video and audio settings to match the material you intend to stream. YouTube recommends H.264 video, CBR bitrate encoding, and a two-second keyframe interval; do not exceed four seconds. Choose a bitrate from YouTube’s current table for your resolution and frame rate rather than assuming one value suits every stream. Check the current recommendations for encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions and make sure your encoder supports the selected format.
Start an immediate or scheduled stream
Immediate encoder stream
Start the encoder and check YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room for an incoming preview or other indication that YouTube is receiving the feed. If no preview appears, use the troubleshooting steps below before treating the stream as live.
Scheduled event
After starting the encoder, wait for its preview to appear in Live Control Room. Then select Go live to begin the scheduled broadcast. When ending a scheduled stream, follow Studio’s event-ending flow; you may need to end the YouTube event as well as stop the encoder.
Reuse or replace a stream key safely
For a recurring stream
You can reuse stream settings or create a custom key where that suits your setup. Keep the key stored only in the intended encoder configuration and restrict access to the VPS and its configuration files.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
If the key is exposed or rejected
Reset the key in Live Control Room, then replace the old value in the VPS encoder with the new one. YouTube says only a channel owner or manager can reset a key. Do not leave the old credential in a running or saved encoder configuration.
What the stream key does—and what it does not
The key authenticates the encoder’s feed to YouTube. Google’s Live Streaming API distinguishes a stream, the incoming audio-video feed, from a broadcast, the viewer-facing event; a 24/7 channel feed can coexist with separate broadcasts. This distinction matters for scheduling and event state, but it does not provide VPS process supervision or guarantee uninterrupted streaming. See Understanding Broadcasts and Streams.

A 24/7 VPS setup also depends on the chosen encoder’s reconnect behavior, process supervision, VPS network capacity, and a way to monitor ingest. The YouTube setup instructions do not prescribe one VPS distribution, encoder package, service manager, firewall rule, watchdog, or reconnect policy. Configure and test those parts for your particular software and host; entering the key alone cannot make a stopped encoder restart.
Troubleshoot common connection problems
| Symptom | Checks and fixes |
|---|---|
| No preview or ingest not received | Check that the encoder is running and sending a supported stream. Verify that the URL and key are current, in their matching fields, and copied from the intended YouTube stream. |
| RTMPS connection or SSL error | Copy the RTMPS URL from Live Control Room rather than assuming the default RTMP URL is interchangeable. Confirm that the encoder supports RTMPS and that its protocol and port settings match YouTube’s URL. See YouTube’s RTMPS guidance. |
| Key rejected or possibly exposed | Reset the key in Live Control Room and update the encoder with the replacement. A channel owner or manager must perform the reset. |
| Encoder stops and the channel goes offline | A stream key does not supervise or restart the encoder. Check the VPS process, network, and encoder-specific reconnect and recovery configuration, and monitor whether YouTube is receiving the feed. |
| Expected archive is missing | YouTube Help says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not rely on that automatic behavior for a continuous stream that exceeds 12 hours; consult YouTube’s encoder streaming guidance for current details. |
Or let it run in the cloud
If you do not want to maintain a VPS encoder, StreamNeo is a YouTube-only cloud service for looping uploaded videos or playlists. Upload your recording, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; it streams the uploaded video as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly billing is $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo or its plans. Start your free first day on StreamNeo.
