To recover a 24/7 YouTube livestream after a network interruption, enable automatic reconnect in your encoder, keep the YouTube stream URL and key configured, and monitor YouTube’s stream health as well as the viewer-facing watch page. If the encoder process itself crashes, a separate process supervisor can restart it—but neither mechanism guarantees that YouTube will accept the feed or that viewers can see it. Test the full recovery path before leaving the stream unattended.
What automatic reconnect does—and does not do
An encoder’s reconnect option retries delivery when a supported output is interrupted while the encoder is still running. It is distinct from restarting an encoder program that has exited. A retry can also fail if the stream key is invalid, YouTube is not in the expected broadcast state, or the VPS cannot reach the ingest server reliably.
OBS documents reconnect controls for supported outputs. Its retry wait doubles after each attempt to avoid overloading services, and a retry count of zero disables reconnect. This is not a promise of unlimited retries or guaranteed recovery. See the OBS Output API Reference.
Set up the YouTube feed and encoder
- Create or select the YouTube stream. In YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, create or open the intended stream and obtain its server URL and stream key. YouTube’s encoder workflow uses both values; the key is sensitive, like a password. See Manage live stream settings and Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
- Configure the encoder. In OBS or your chosen encoder, enter YouTube’s stream URL and key in the streaming service settings. Keep the key private. If it is exposed, replace or reset it through YouTube Studio and update the encoder.
- Enable automatic reconnect in OBS. In OBS, open Settings → Advanced, find the Network section, enable Automatically Reconnect, and choose a retry delay and retry count appropriate to your operation. Labels may vary by OBS version. Confirm that reconnect is enabled for the output you actually use; OBS’s documented retry behavior applies to supported outputs.
- Check YouTube’s start behavior. YouTube’s auto-start and auto-stop options can start or stop a broadcast from the encoder when enabled. Confirm those settings match whether you use a scheduled event or another live setup; do not assume reconnect changes the broadcast’s state. Details are in YouTube’s stream settings help.
Choose settings the VPS can sustain
Match bitrate to resolution, frame rate, codec, and the VPS’s real upload capacity. YouTube’s current H.264 recommendations include 10 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps and 17 Mbps for 1080p at 60 fps. Those are YouTube recommendations, not evidence that a particular VPS can sustain them; other codecs have different recommendations. Check the host’s network capability and route to YouTube ingest rather than assuming an India location alone means a reliable connection. Consult YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.

OBS identifies intermittent disconnections and dropped frames as signs of a connection problem between the encoder and remote ingest server. Potential causes include the network route, congestion, configuration, or host stability, so changing reconnect settings alone may not resolve the cause. See OBS Stream Connection Troubleshooting.
Restart the encoder if its process exits
Automatic reconnect cannot retry from a program that has stopped. For a VPS deployment, configure a separate process supervisor to relaunch the encoder if it exits, and make sure its logs and restart behavior are visible to whoever maintains the stream. This is an operational safeguard, not a YouTube or OBS guarantee. After a restart, verify the key, incoming feed, broadcast state, and viewer playback; a process being alive does not prove the stream is healthy.

Test recovery before relying on it
- Start the intended broadcast and confirm that YouTube is receiving the feed.
- Deliberately interrupt the encoder’s network connection or otherwise simulate an interruption safely. Observe whether the encoder retries and whether it reconnects within the limits you configured.
- Check YouTube’s stream health/status and the public or unlisted watch page. A successful encoder reconnect alone does not confirm viewer playback.
- Test the separate process-restart path if you configured a supervisor. Confirm that the encoder returns and that YouTube accepts its feed.
- Review logs and any local recording or archive you rely on. YouTube recommends testing failover and checking the event page and archive in its live streaming tips.
Read YouTube status without confusing feed and broadcast state
The YouTube Live Streaming API’s stream resource reports states including active (data is being received), created, error, inactive (data is not being received), and ready. It also exposes health information for diagnosing stream problems. These are stream-resource states, not a complete description of every live-broadcast lifecycle state. See LiveStreams: YouTube Live Streaming API. Use the YouTube event and watch page too, especially when confirming what viewers can actually see.
Plan archives separately from continuous delivery
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That statement does not establish that a continuous 24/7 broadcast will be saved as one complete video. If the documentary stream needs a dependable archive, plan for recording and verify the resulting segments or files rather than treating uninterrupted delivery as an archive guarantee.
