Before connecting the filters, make the video inputs match in frame rate, resolution, pixel format, and timebase. Then calculate each transition’s offset from the actual clip durations and overlaps, map the filtergraph outputs, encode the result, and send it to YouTube’s RTMPS ingest. The setup depends on your source media and playlist; the template below is a design pattern, not a tested one-command recipe.
What you need to prepare
Inspect each clip before building the filtergraph. Record its duration, video dimensions, frame rate, pixel format, timebase, audio presence, and audio layout. FFmpeg’s filter documentation requires the two inputs to xfade to be constant-frame-rate and to match in resolution, pixel format, frame rate, and timebase.
- Choose a common output resolution and frame rate that fit your intended stream.
- Decide how to handle clips with no audio, different audio layouts, or gaps. These cases need their own filtergraph decisions; a basic crossfade does not resolve them automatically.
- Choose a transition duration and style. A short overlap makes a quicker handoff; a longer one blends the images for longer. FFmpeg’s
xfadeoffers transition effects beyond a simple fade. - Check that your local FFmpeg build includes the filters and encoder you intend to use.
Normalize video inputs before using xfade
Apply video filters to each input so the streams entering xfade have matching properties. In the schematic below, ... stands for the actual normalization filters and values selected for your files; it is not literal FFmpeg syntax to paste into a command.
[0:v]...normalization...[v0];[1:v]...normalization...[v1];[v0][v1]xfade=transition=fade:duration=D:offset=O[v]Set D to the overlap duration and O to the time on the first clip’s timeline when the transition begins. Normalization must produce constant-frame-rate video with matching resolution, pixel format, frame rate, and timebase on both sides of the transition. Don’t assume matching file extensions or nominal frame rates are enough: verify the properties of the streams that the filters will actually receive.

Crossfade the audio separately
xfade affects video, not audio. For two audio streams that are suitable for mixing, use acrossfade for the sound handoff. The schematic is:
[0:a]...[a0];[1:a]...[a1];[a0][a1]acrossfade=d=D[a]Here D is the audio overlap duration. FFmpeg documents audio duration and curve options for acrossfade; choose them to suit the material and listen to the result. If a clip has no audio or the sources have incompatible layouts, decide whether to add silence, convert or mix the channels, or use a different audio arrangement before applying the crossfade. The video and audio transitions are independent, so check that their timing and durations produce the handoff you want.

Calculate offsets for a playlist
A transition overlaps clips, so the output timeline is shorter than the sum of the source durations. For a chain of clips, connect each new clip to the preceding xfade output and calculate each later offset from the accumulated output timeline, including the overlaps already used. Do the equivalent for the audio chain. Do not copy the first transition’s offset into every later link.
Use measured durations rather than assuming that every source ends exactly at a convenient timestamp. Then inspect the joins for early cuts, black frames, freezes, or timing drift. The correct offsets depend on the actual playlist, transition lengths, and media timing.

Build and map the final filtergraph
For two clips, the overall filtergraph design joins the normalized video pads with xfade and the prepared audio pads with acrossfade:

For a longer playlist, chain the outputs and recalculate every offset from the overlapped timeline.

Label the final video and audio outputs, then map those labels in the command. FFmpeg’s command-line documentation explains that labeled complex-filter outputs must be mapped explicitly. Because filters operate on decoded frames, encode the filtered output; -c copy cannot pass through the result of these video and audio filters as if it were untouched input. Select an encoder available in your FFmpeg build and set the output frame rate, codec, bitrate, keyframe interval, and audio codec deliberately.
Set YouTube ingest and encoder settings
Use the RTMPS ingest URL and stream key provided in YouTube Live Control Room. YouTube’s current encoder settings guidance lists RTMP/RTMPS ingest, H.264, H.265 (HEVC), and AV1 video, frame rates up to 60 fps, AAC or MP3 audio, and constant bitrate (CBR). It recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds. Choose a bitrate from YouTube’s table for your intended codec, resolution, and frame rate rather than selecting one value for every stream.

YouTube recommends RTMPS. FFmpeg describes RTMPS as RTMP over a secure SSL connection in its protocol documentation. Treat the stream key as a credential: keep it out of public commands, logs, screenshots, and shared configuration files. If it is exposed, replace it in YouTube Live Control Room.
Test and monitor before relying on a continuous stream
- Run a test with representative movement, audio, transitions, and stream settings. YouTube’s encoder guidance says, “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.”
- Watch the output around every transition. Look and listen for abrupt cuts, black frames, freezes, audio gaps, clicks, mismatched audio/video handoffs, and drift.
- Check YouTube’s stream-health messages during the event. YouTube advises: “During the event, monitor the stream health and review messages.”
- For continuous operation, plan for the actual workload, network, YouTube ingest configuration, and restart or monitoring needs. The filtergraph alone does not guarantee uninterrupted 24/7 delivery.
Troubleshoot common crossfade problems
