How to Limit FFmpeg CPU Usage on a VPS While Streaming to YouTube

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To lower FFmpeg’s CPU use, first identify the video encoder, then test a smaller encoder thread count with -threads:v N. This can reduce parallel work, but it is not a fixed CPU-percentage limit: the result depends on the encoder, FFmpeg build, filters, and stream workload. Measure whether FFmpeg still encodes in real time and whether YouTube reports a healthy stream.

What a thread limit can—and cannot—do

FFmpeg’s encoder thread setting is the most direct FFmpeg-level place to start. The FFmpeg encoder reference describes thread counts and multithreading modes, but support and behavior vary by encoder. Limiting threads can reduce parallel processing; it does not impose a universal CPU ceiling on the entire FFmpeg process.

CPU use may also come from filters, audio processing, demuxing, and other work. A particular thread count therefore cannot guarantee that a VPS will stay below a given CPU percentage or that the stream will keep up.

Find the encoder and check its options

  1. Inspect the FFmpeg command or service configuration and find the video encoder. It may appear as an output option such as -c:v libx264; the encoder named there is the one whose help you should check.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
    • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
    • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
    • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
    • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
    • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
  2. Ask the installed FFmpeg build for that encoder’s options. For libx264, run ffmpeg -h encoder=libx264. Substitute the actual encoder name if different. Encoder options can vary with the build, so use the local help output to confirm support before changing a command.

  3. Check that the proposed setting applies to the video encoder, not just another stream. In common FFmpeg syntax, -threads:v N sets the video stream’s thread count to N. Place the option with the output options for the output it should affect, and verify the encoder accepts it.

Reduce threads and test the real workload

  1. Record the current command and CPU behavior so you can compare results and roll back. Start with a modestly lower thread count than the current configuration rather than assuming a universal best value.

  3. For a file being used as a live source, -re reads the input at its native frame rate and can be useful for real-time streaming. Do not add it automatically to a source that is already live. See the FFmpeg command-line documentation.

  4. FFmpeg also documents benchmark reporting for encode timing. Use timing information alongside system CPU monitoring; neither alone proves the YouTube ingest is healthy.

    • What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
  5. Decrease the thread count stepwise only while the encode remains at least real time and the stream remains stable. If delay grows, frames fall behind, or YouTube reports stream-health problems, restore the prior working setting or reduce the processing workload.

Evaluate each configuration on four measures: CPU headroom for other VPS work, real-time encoding without growing delay, acceptable visual quality, and YouTube stream health plus upload stability. There is no universally best thread count.

  • Lower resolution or frame rate: this can reduce processing demand, but changes the delivered picture or motion.
  • Try a less demanding encoder preset: it may ease CPU load while changing compression efficiency or visual quality. Compare the actual output rather than assuming quality is unchanged.
  • Use stream copy when it fits: if the source is already encoded compatibly and needs no video transformation, copying the video stream avoids video re-encoding. It is not suitable when you need to resize, change frame rate, apply video filters, or otherwise transform the video.

Keep the settings appropriate for the output instead of changing codec or quality solely to lower CPU. Validate the resulting picture, latency, and YouTube stream health.

Do not use -cpucount as a production limiter

FFmpeg documents -cpucount as an override for the detected CPU count, intended for testing; it is not documented as an operating-system CPU quota. Do not treat it as a hard cap on FFmpeg’s CPU use. See the FFmpeg command-line documentation.

If you need a hard ceiling or stronger isolation, the relevant control must come from an operating-system or VPS-level resource-control feature available in your environment. FFmpeg’s encoder thread setting is not that control.

Keep YouTube’s live settings and connection in view

Lower CPU use is useful only if the resulting stream still reaches YouTube reliably and meets the needs of the channel. YouTube’s live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions guidance lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 video options, supports frame rates up to 60 fps, recommends CBR, and recommends a two-second keyframe interval, not exceeding four seconds. It also recommends RTMPS.

Choose the codec and settings that fit your stream; do not change them just to reduce CPU without testing the result. YouTube’s bitrate recommendations depend on resolution and frame rate, so consult its current table rather than relying on a bitrate copied into an old command. Choose quality your upload connection can sustain, test with representative motion and audio before going live, and monitor YouTube’s stream-health status and messages during the event.

Troubleshoot common symptoms

Symptom Likely explanation What to check or do
CPU remains high after lowering threads The encoder may not support or honor the option as expected; filters, audio, or other process work may be significant. Confirm the actual encoder and its local help output with ffmpeg -h encoder=<encoder>. Check the command’s output options and test with filters or other workload changes isolated one at a time.
FFmpeg falls behind or delay grows The reduced parallelism or overall VPS capacity may not sustain the workload in real time. Restore the previous thread count or reduce resolution, frame rate, or encoding demands. Re-test timing and stream health.
CPU is lower but video quality or motion is worse A workload change may have altered the picture or motion; lower CPU does not guarantee equivalent output. Compare representative footage and choose a resolution, frame rate, and preset that balance quality with real-time performance.
YouTube reports poor stream health or ingest interruptions The issue may involve upload reliability or output settings, not just encoder CPU. Check YouTube’s stream-health messages, connection stability, codec, bitrate mode, keyframe interval, and RTMPS configuration. Test before the event with representative content.
-cpucount does not cap CPU use It changes FFmpeg’s detected CPU count for testing; it is not documented as a process quota. Remove it as a supposed limiter. For a hard ceiling, check which OS- or VPS-level resource controls your environment actually provides.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is a continuous YouTube stream of uploaded videos rather than controlling a VPS-based FFmpeg process, StreamNeo is a cloud alternative: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay running at home. Each slot streams your upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot; there are no quality tiers or re-encoding. StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo is for uploaded video and YouTube streaming, not going live from a camera. Start the free day with StreamNeo.
