OBS Studio is the best free option for looping a prerecorded video into a YouTube Live stream from your own computer. Use OBS’s Media Source for one video file, or VLC Video Source for a playlist. The software can loop playback, but it does not keep a computer, power supply or internet connection from failing—so a local setup needs monitoring, especially for an unattended stream.
Which free software should you use?
OBS Studio for a single video
OBS Studio is free to use, open source under GPLv2, and has no watermark or usage limitations, according to its official help material. Add the video as a Media Source and enable its Loop control to restart it when playback ends. This is the simplest fit when you want to repeat one prerecorded documentary or other video file. OBS Media Sources
OBS with VLC for a playlist
For several videos, use OBS’s VLC Video Source and enable Loop Playlist. This route requires VLC to be installed; if you use 64-bit OBS, install 64-bit VLC. VLC is not required for a single file added as an OBS Media Source. OBS lists supported common formats including MP4, MOV, MKV, AVI, WebM, MP3, AAC, OGG and WAV; check that your particular file and its audio are supported. OBS Media Sources
These are the documented playback paths, not a measured comparison of performance on Indian computers or networks. YouTube also supports standalone hardware encoders, but one is not needed for this local-file OBS workflow. A webcam and microphone are likewise unnecessary if you are only broadcasting prerecorded material.

What you need before starting
- A YouTube channel eligible for live streaming. YouTube requires channel verification and no live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days. First-time activation can take up to 24 hours, so enable it ahead of your planned broadcast. YouTube’s guidance also sets 16 as the minimum age for livestreaming. YouTube: Get started with live streaming
- OBS Studio, your video files, and enough local storage to keep those files available throughout the stream.
- A stable power supply and internet connection. A loop setting repeats the media; it does not protect against a computer shutdown, power loss or network interruption.
- Permission to broadcast the video and its audio. All streamed content must comply with YouTube’s Community Guidelines and Terms of Service. YouTube: Live streaming encoder settings
How to loop a video on YouTube Live with OBS
- Enable live streaming: In YouTube Studio, start the live-streaming activation process and complete any verification steps. If this is your first time enabling live streaming, allow up to 24 hours for activation. Confirm that the channel has no live-streaming restrictions from the past 90 days before planning the broadcast. YouTube: Get started with live streaming
- Create the YouTube stream: Open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room and create or schedule a stream. Copy the stream URL and stream key shown there. Treat the stream key as a credential: do not share it publicly.
- Add your video in OBS: In the Sources panel, select + and choose Media Source. Create or select a source, choose the video file, and enable Loop. For multiple files, add a VLC Video Source, select the playlist, and enable Loop Playlist. Install VLC first if you use that source.
- Connect OBS to YouTube: In OBS, open Settings > Stream, choose YouTube as the service, and enter the stream key; if needed, configure the stream URL and key provided in the Live Control Room. OBS sends the feed to YouTube using those connection details. Keep the key private.
- Check the feed before going public: Start the encoder from OBS and inspect the YouTube Live Control Room preview for picture, framing and audio. Start the public broadcast when the preview is correct. YouTube recommends monitoring audio and video quality continuously while live. YouTube: Live streaming encoder settings
- Monitor the stream: Check that playback continues through the end of the file and restarts as expected. For a playlist, verify that it advances through the selected files and loops. Keep the computer running, the source files accessible and the stream under observation.
Plan around YouTube’s live-stream limits
Replays and long broadcasts
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Treat that as a practical replay boundary: if you need an archive, check the current Live Control Room guidance for broadcasts reaching or exceeding 12 hours rather than assuming the replay will be saved automatically. Copyright and reused material
A loop setting does not grant rights to a film, documentary, soundtrack or other material. Only stream content you own or are authorized to use, and ensure the full stream complies with YouTube’s Community Guidelines and Terms of Service. Repeating a video also does not by itself establish that a channel meets YouTube’s monetization policies; check the current policies separately if monetization is your goal. Common problems and fixes
- The stream option is unavailable: Check channel verification, live-streaming eligibility and any restrictions in the past 90 days. If activation was just requested, allow up to 24 hours.
- YouTube shows no incoming video: Confirm OBS is streaming to the correct YouTube service and that the stream key matches the stream open in Live Control Room. Stop the encoder before replacing a key, then start it again and check the preview.
- The video stops instead of repeating: Reopen the Media Source properties and confirm Loop is enabled. For a playlist, check the VLC Video Source’s Loop Playlist setting.
- VLC Video Source is missing or does not work: Install VLC. Match its architecture to OBS; 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC. A single-file Media Source avoids this VLC dependency.
- The source will not play correctly: Check the file format and audio track against OBS’s supported formats, then test playback in the OBS preview before going live.
- The stream goes offline unexpectedly: A local loop cannot recover from a powered-off computer, lost internet or encoder failure. Restore the computer and connection, reconnect OBS to the active YouTube stream, and verify the preview. Monitor the output while live.
- The archive is missing: Check whether the broadcast lasted 12 hours or longer; YouTube’s stated automatic-archive behavior applies to streams under 12 hours. Consult current Live Control Room guidance for longer broadcasts.
