For one local video, use OBS’s Media Source and enable Loop. For an ordered list of videos, use VLC Video Source; its Loop Playlist option is on by default. These are media sources inside an OBS scene—not the connection to YouTube Live. You still need to configure OBS as your encoder and start the broadcast through YouTube’s Live Control Room.
Which OBS source should you use?
| Need | Choose | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Repeat one local video | Media Source | It supports local audio/video files and has a Loop setting. |
| Play a sequence of media files | VLC Video Source | It supports playlists, with controls for looping and shuffling. |
This is a workflow choice based on the controls each source documents, not a playback-quality benchmark. OBS does not publish comparative tests establishing which source is more reliable, uses less CPU or GPU, or transitions more seamlessly. Try your actual files in the scene you plan to stream.
Loop a single video with Media Source
- Add the source: In OBS, select the scene, click the + in the Sources dock, and choose Media Source. Create a new source or select an existing one.
- Choose the file: In the source properties, select the local video file. OBS lists common formats including MP4, MOV, MKV, AVI, and WebM.
- Enable looping: Turn on Loop so playback repeats when the file ends.
- Check scene-switch behavior: Review Restart playback when source becomes active and visibility-related settings if you switch away from and back to this scene. Their effect matters when the source is activated or hidden during a production.
- Verify the result: Preview the scene and let the clip reach its end at least once. Check both picture and audio before using the scene in a broadcast.
Play and loop a playlist with VLC Video Source
- Install VLC first: OBS’s VLC Video Source depends on VLC being installed. If your OBS installation is 64-bit, OBS documentation specifies 64-bit VLC as well.
- Add the source: In OBS, select the scene, click + in the Sources dock, and choose VLC Video Source. If the option is missing, check that VLC is installed and matches OBS’s architecture.
- Build the playlist: Add the media files in the order you want them to play. Confirm the paths point to the files available on the streaming computer.
- Set playlist behavior: Loop Playlist defaults to On; Shuffle Playlist defaults to Off. Confirm both settings match your intended sequence. Review visibility behavior and network caching if relevant to your setup.
- Rehearse the whole sequence: Preview transitions between files, verify their audio, and observe the end-to-start transition before going live. The documented settings do not establish that transitions will be gapless for every combination of files and computer.
OBS describes VLC Video Source as using VLC libraries for extended media support over the built-in Media Source. That dependency is useful when playlist management or VLC-supported media handling is needed, but it is an additional installation to maintain.
Connect the OBS scene to YouTube Live
Adding either source does not start a YouTube broadcast. The source supplies media to the OBS scene; OBS then encodes and sends the produced video feed to YouTube. YouTube lists OBS in its encoder guidance. Follow YouTube’s encoder setup guidance and configure the stream in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Confirm eligibility: YouTube says live streaming requires a verified channel with no live-streaming restriction in the preceding 90 days. Its getting-started guidance says streamers must be at least 16. If you cannot start a stream, check current channel eligibility and account status.
- Configure the YouTube stream: In YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, create or select the stream and use its stream key in OBS. Treat the key as a credential: do not show or share it publicly.
- Set OBS output to match your connection and target: YouTube recommends RTMPS and supports H.264, H.265, or AV1 video, up to 60 fps, AAC or MP3 audio, and CBR bitrate encoding. The appropriate bitrate depends on codec, resolution, and frame rate.
- Use a suitable keyframe interval: YouTube recommends two seconds and says the interval should not exceed four seconds.
- Rehearse and monitor: Start a private or unlisted test with representative audio and movement, then check the Live Control Room preview. Monitor stream health and audio/video quality during the broadcast.
For H.264, YouTube lists 1080p at 30 fps as 5 Mbps minimum and 14 Mbps recommended; for 1080p at 60 fps, it lists 6 Mbps minimum and 17 Mbps recommended. These are YouTube-published encoder settings, not measurements comparing OBS sources. YouTube also recommends keeping total stream bitrate within available upload bandwidth and leaving 20% headroom.
Copyright and suitability of looped material
Looping a file does not grant permission to broadcast it. Use material you own or have permission to use, and check that any music, footage, photographs, and other included material are cleared for live streaming on YouTube. A technically valid OBS setup cannot prevent a rights claim or restriction. Also make the broadcast useful and distinctive to viewers; repeating a file is a playback method, not a guarantee that the channel or its content meets YouTube policies.

Troubleshoot common problems
| Symptom | Likely check | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| VLC Video Source is missing | VLC is not installed, or its architecture does not match OBS. | Install VLC; for 64-bit OBS, use 64-bit VLC, then reopen OBS and check the source menu. |
| A clip plays once and stops | The source’s loop setting is off. | For one file, enable Media Source’s Loop. For a playlist, confirm Loop Playlist is on. |
| The playlist order changes | Shuffle is enabled. | Turn off Shuffle Playlist if you need the listed order. |
| The scene is blank or a file does not play | The file path may be wrong or unavailable on the streaming computer. | Confirm the file exists at the selected path and test it in the OBS preview. |
| The video or audio differs from expectations | Source settings, scene visibility, media behavior, or output configuration may not match the production. | Test the complete scene with representative movement and sound; inspect visibility and activation behavior, then check the Live Control Room preview. |
| YouTube does not receive a stream | The encoder connection, stream key, channel eligibility, or available upload capacity may be at fault. | Check the key and OBS connection, confirm account eligibility, and compare total bitrate with upload capacity while leaving YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom. |
Or let it run in the cloud
If the goal is a YouTube channel that keeps playing uploaded videos while your computer is off, StreamNeo is a cloud alternative to running OBS at home. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. StreamNeo loops the uploaded videos from the cloud; it does not stream from a camera.
