You can automate a 24/7 YouTube stream by running FFmpeg continuously on a computer or server that can read your video file and maintain a stable upload connection. FFmpeg sends the feed to YouTube’s live ingest; you monitor the stream and arrange your own recovery and recording. For an unattended setup, test the full workflow before relying on it: YouTube warns that a stream longer than 12 hours may not be captured as an archive.
The steps below use a looping video file and a 1080p30 H.264 example. YouTube’s bitrate figures are recommendations, not guarantees of connection stability. In India, as elsewhere, choose settings based on your own sustained upload and test from the location where the stream will run.
What you need before starting
- A YouTube channel that is verified and has had no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility and setup guide explains the requirements.
- FFmpeg installed on a computer, virtual machine, or other host that can access the video file and stay connected to the internet.
- A recording you have the rights to stream, plus a stable upload connection appropriate for your selected quality.
- A stream key created in YouTube Live Control Room. Treat it as a password: anyone who obtains it could send a feed to your stream.
For a documentary or music channel, confirm that you hold the rights needed to stream the material. YouTube’s livestream terms make the content provider responsible for necessary rights, including music rights, and applicable legal requirements. Having a copy of a film, recording, or soundtrack does not by itself establish streaming rights.
Choose a host and test your upload
FFmpeg can run on a local computer or on a cloud virtual machine. With a local host, the files and controls are nearby, but the machine, power, and connection must remain available. With a virtual machine, the process runs away from your home computer, but you still need to manage the server, media storage, monitoring, and recovery. The sources cited here do not establish a universally best Indian ISP, cloud region, bandwidth threshold, power backup, or hosting price; measure and test your own setup.

YouTube recommends testing upload speed, selecting a quality your connection can reliably sustain, and testing with similar motion and audio before going live. Its current encoder settings guidance gives these H.264 bitrate recommendations:

These are YouTube recommendations, not minimum guarantees for an Indian home or server connection. Leave capacity for ordinary network variation and test the actual stream in Live Control Room. YouTube recommends CBR, a 2-second keyframe interval (not more than 4 seconds), and RTMPS. Its guidance lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 video, and AAC or MP3 audio; the command below is specifically an H.264/AAC example.

Create the YouTube stream and protect its key
- Open YouTube Live Control Room and create or schedule a live stream.
- Copy the ingest server URL and stream key shown for that stream. Use the RTMPS endpoint and ingest details provided in the current control room. The YouTube RTMPS guide explains the secure ingest protocol; sending cleartext RTMP to an endpoint expecting RTMPS may connect without producing a usable response.
- Store the URL and key outside the command history and public scripts. For a Linux shell, environment variables are one option; restrict access to the account and files that can read them. Do not paste a real key into a tutorial, screenshot, or public repository.

Loop a prerecorded video with FFmpeg
Set the ingest URL and key in your shell, then adapt this example to the path of your file. It targets 1080p at 30 fps, H.264 at YouTube’s 10 Mbps recommendation for that mode, and AAC audio. It is an example command, not a tested or guaranteed 24/7 service configuration.

The command uses FFmpeg’s real-time input pacing and indefinite input looping; check the FFmpeg protocol documentation for protocol options. Confirm your installed FFmpeg build supports the chosen encoder. The scale-and-pad filter fits the image inside a 1920×1080 frame without cropping; it can add bars when the source aspect ratio differs. If your source has no audio, or uses an unusual format, test and adjust the audio handling before deployment.
The example’s 60-frame GOP at 30 fps corresponds to a 2-second keyframe interval. For a different frame rate or resolution, change the frame rate, GOP, dimensions, and bitrate together rather than copying the 1080p30 values unchanged. Keep CBR behavior via matching target and maximum video bitrate settings, and verify the resulting stream health in YouTube Live Control Room.

Make the process unattended
A command that works in a terminal is not yet an unattended system. Treat monitoring and recovery as part of the setup; the following are practical engineering considerations, not a claim that any particular setup will stay online or reconnect successfully.
- Run under a service manager. Configure a service such as systemd on Linux to start FFmpeg after reboot and restart it after an unexpected exit. Test restart behavior deliberately before relying on it.
- Monitor both sides. Check the FFmpeg process and logs, the host’s CPU, memory and disk, network connectivity, and YouTube’s stream health. A process that is running does not prove viewers are receiving a healthy feed.
- Plan recovery. Document how to restart the process, replace a compromised key, and restore the stream after host, network, or YouTube-side interruption. Do not assume an FFmpeg reconnect flag or a restart policy alone guarantees recovery.
- Protect storage. If you create a local recording, monitor free space and decide how recordings are rotated or moved. A continuous archive can consume substantial storage.
- Test the real workload. Run a private or otherwise appropriate test using the same file, resolution, frame rate, audio, host, and network conditions. Confirm that the feed appears correctly and that your restart and recovery steps work.
For a managed alternative architecture, Google Cloud’s Live Stream API accepts RTMP or SRT input and outputs HLS or DASH; its documentation gives FFmpeg as an example input sender. That is a managed transcoding pipeline, not a required component in the direct FFmpeg-to-YouTube workflow.

Keep a complete recording separately
YouTube can automatically archive streams under 12 hours, but warns that a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. A 24/7 broadcast therefore should not rely on YouTube’s automatic archive when a complete recording matters. Keep a separate local or otherwise controlled recording and test its storage, file integrity, and rotation. See YouTube’s archive live streams guidance.
Common problems and fixes
- FFmpeg runs but YouTube shows no usable feed: check that the URL is the RTMPS endpoint displayed for this stream, that the key is current and copied exactly, and that the output uses the expected container/protocol. YouTube’s RTMPS guidance describes the cleartext-versus-secure endpoint failure mode.
- Stream health reports instability: reduce resolution, frame rate, or bitrate, then test again on the actual host connection. A published bitrate recommendation does not establish that your measured upload can sustain it reliably.
- The stream drops after a host restart: check service-manager status and logs, credentials availability, file paths, and network access. Test a full reboot and recovery sequence before leaving the stream unattended.
- Video has bars, looks stretched, or is cropped: inspect the source aspect ratio and filter. The example preserves the full picture by scaling and padding; remove or change that filter only if you have checked how the source should be framed.
- Audio is missing or distorted: confirm the source contains an audio stream and test the selected AAC encoding and sample rate. Verify sound in a private test before broadcasting.
- The archive is missing or incomplete: for a broadcast longer than 12 hours, this can fall within YouTube’s stated archive limitation. Use a separate recording path if a complete copy is essential.
Monetization and policy are separate from automation
A technically continuous feed does not guarantee monetization or acceptance into the YouTube Partner Program. YouTube’s current overview describes a full ad-eligibility path of 1,000 subscribers and either 4,000 qualified public watch hours in the prior 12 months or 10 million qualified Shorts views in the prior 90 days, subject to other account, policy, and review conditions. It excludes watch hours from livestreams that are unlisted, deleted, or not converted to VOD. Check the current YouTube Partner Program overview for the full terms. Eligible channels may have live-stream ads, Super Chat and Super Stickers, or memberships, but ad slots are not guaranteed to serve; see YouTube’s live monetization guidance.
