To keep OBS streaming overnight on a Windows PC, prevent Windows from sleeping while plugged in, enable OBS automatic reconnect for supported network interruptions, and plan separately for power cuts. A UPS may keep essential equipment running for a limited, load-dependent time; none of these steps guarantees an uninterrupted stream.
Keep Windows awake while OBS is streaming
Sleep suspends processor activity, so OBS cannot continue streaming while the PC is asleep. Windows 11 has separate controls for turning off the screen and putting the PC to sleep: the display can turn off while the computer stays awake.
- Open Settings > System > Power & battery > Screen, sleep & hibernate timeouts.
- For the plugged-in session, set the sleep timeout long enough that the PC will not sleep during the stream. If available, choose Never for the planned session.
- Set the screen-off timeout independently. You can allow the display to turn off if you do not need to monitor it, while keeping the PC awake.
- Keep the computer connected to power and verify the settings apply while plugged in. Windows may show different timeout choices for battery and plugged-in use.
Windows settings can vary by device and edition. If you do not see the same labels, search Settings for sleep or power options and confirm that the plugged-in sleep behavior—not just the screen timeout—is configured.
If you are using a laptop
Closing the lid may put a laptop to sleep. Before leaving it unattended, check the lid-close action in Windows Power Options and confirm that it will not suspend the PC. Do not close the lid or press the power button without verifying what action Windows is configured to take.

Enable OBS automatic reconnect
OBS automatic reconnect can help recover from supported output or network interruptions. It is separate from Windows power settings: reconnect does not wake a sleeping PC or restore a computer that has lost power, and it cannot guarantee that YouTube will accept a reconnect.
- In OBS, open Settings > Advanced and find the Network section.
- Enable Automatically Reconnect.
- Set the retry delay and maximum retries to values appropriate for your connection and the length of interruption you want OBS to attempt to survive.
- Apply the settings and test the behavior before relying on it overnight. The available labels or placement can vary with OBS versions.
OBS contributor Fenrirthviti wrote in a GitHub issue discussion about replay-buffer behavior around sleep: “There is no way to reasonably recover from this while an output is active, and we explicitly inhibit sleep while OBS is active. Bypassing this or forcing the PC to sleep is unsupported.” That comment is specific to the issue’s context; it is not a blanket compatibility guarantee for every OBS setup.

Plan for power interruptions in India
OBS reconnect and a computer UPS address different failure modes. Reconnect can address some network interruptions; a UPS supplies backup power for a limited period. It does not guarantee an overnight run.
To assess a UPS, identify the total watt load of the equipment that must stay on and compare it with the UPS’s supported load and runtime at that load. Include only essential devices, such as the PC and the router or other network device required for the stream. Adding equipment increases the load and can reduce runtime. The right capacity depends on your measured or specified load and the backup time you need; there is no single model or VA rating that fits every setup.

Test the full setup before leaving it unattended
- Run a private or otherwise low-risk test stream and confirm the intended OBS scene, picture and audio.
- Confirm the PC remains awake with the display timeout and plugged-in sleep settings you plan to use.
- Check that OBS automatic reconnect is enabled and observe how the stream behaves if your connection briefly drops, using a low-risk test rather than relying on the result unverified.
- If using a UPS, confirm that the essential equipment is connected and that its load and estimated runtime meet your needs.
- Check the stream from another device before leaving the PC, and make sure you know how you will regain access if OBS, Windows or the network needs attention.
Optional: launch OBS and start streaming automatically
OBS documents --startstreaming as a launch parameter. This can be part of an unattended startup workflow, but it does not resolve Windows sign-in requirements, network or power failures, or service-side problems.
- Create or edit the OBS shortcut or Windows task you intend to use for launching OBS.
- Configure the launch to pass the
--startstreamingparameter. - For Windows automation, set the shortcut or task’s Start in working directory to the folder containing
obs64.exe. - Test the complete startup sequence, including any Windows sign-in behavior and the OBS scene and stream connection, before depending on it overnight.
