Start in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room: check Stream health, note the exact error and when it appeared, then follow the matching fix. A stream that has ended in Studio is a different problem from a stream that remains live but buffers or drops for viewers. Without the status message, encoder details, or upload measurements, there is no reliable way to identify the cause in advance.
First, determine what “stopping” means
Open the stream dashboard in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room and check the stream status or health message. Copy the wording and timestamp before changing settings. YouTube says the dashboard provides status messages and instructions; a message may remain until its underlying cause is resolved.
- The broadcast ends or will not start in Studio: follow the stream-key, encoder, format, or channel-limit checks below, guided by the displayed error.
- Studio still shows the broadcast as live, but viewers report buffering or interruptions: focus on encoder output and the outbound connection, then compare bitrate with available upload capacity.
Use the message shown for your broadcast rather than treating every possible error as the likely cause. YouTube’s Live Control Room metrics guidance and live-streaming error list explain the status information and named errors.
Fix the problem indicated by the stream status
If the encoder cannot start or YouTube rejects the key
In Live Control Room, verify the stream URL and key, then compare them with the values configured in your encoder. If you reset the key, replace the old value in the encoder with the current one. YouTube’s stream troubleshooting guidance describes retrieving the key from Live Control Room and entering it in a third-party encoder. Treat the key like a password: do not post or share it publicly.

If the message names a format or channel limit
Follow the specific error shown in Studio. YouTube’s error list documents an incorrect-format case that calls for H.264 video and AAC audio, and it also lists a daily live-stream limit. These are targeted checks—not general explanations for an interrupted stream. Do not change encoding format or assume a limit applies unless the displayed error points there.
Separate encoder faults from connection faults
Check the encoder first
- Update the encoder software and confirm it is sending the intended stream.
- Inspect the encoded preview or output and its sound. If the output itself is faulty, investigate the source input and the encoder’s workload.
- Check CPU load around the time of the interruption. Heavy load can coincide with an encoder problem; note what happens rather than assuming it is the cause.
- If available, review a local recording of the output. If these checks do not reveal the issue, YouTube suggests trying another encoder as a diagnostic comparison.
If the encoder output looks healthy, investigate the outbound connection next. YouTube’s live-stream troubleshooting steps cover encoder, output, and connectivity checks.

Test upload capacity and stability
Measure upload performance during the conditions when the stream usually fails, not only at a quiet time. Upload capacity is what sends the broadcast; a strong download result does not establish that the outbound link can sustain it. YouTube Help recommends keeping the total streaming bitrate below available upload bandwidth and leaving 20% headroom. The cited YouTube guidance does not display a publication year.
Account for other people and devices using the same connection: their traffic can reduce the capacity available to the stream. YouTube Help notes, “A disruption on your connectivity could mean a broken stream.” If you are using Wi-Fi, a wired Ethernet connection can be a useful comparison test, but it is not a guaranteed fix. Change one variable at a time and see whether the same interruption recurs.

Choose stream settings your connection can sustain
Do not raise resolution or bitrate simply to get the highest possible picture quality. Choose a quality level the connection can maintain, test before going live, and watch Stream health and its messages during the broadcast. Compare the encoder’s configured bitrate with the upload capacity measured under realistic conditions, leaving the headroom YouTube recommends.
For the current recommended bitrate ranges by resolution, frame rate, and codec, use YouTube’s encoder settings guidance. Those recommendations can change, so consult the table there rather than relying on a memorized value.

Change one thing at a time to isolate the cause
- Record the Live Control Room message and timestamp.
- At the same time, check encoder output and CPU load.
- Measure upload stability and note whether the connection is shared.
- Compare configured resolution and bitrate with available upload capacity.
- If practical, test a wired connection instead of Wi-Fi or compare with a second encoder. Keep other settings unchanged and observe whether the failure repeats.
This sequence helps distinguish an ingest or key problem from an encoder or network problem; it does not establish the cause until your own stream’s symptoms point to one.
Keep long-stream archiving separate from interruptions
YouTube’s encoder setup guidance says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That statement does not guarantee an archive for a stream longer than 12 hours, and archive availability does not explain why a live feed ended. If the issue is a missing archive after a long broadcast, treat it as a separate question and check YouTube’s current encoder setup guidance rather than assuming a 24/7 stream will be saved.
