Run FFmpeg as a systemd service by first testing a command that sends your media to the ingest URL and stream key shown in YouTube Studio, then placing that command in a protected service unit. systemd can restart a failed local FFmpeg process; it cannot guarantee that YouTube will keep the same live event uninterrupted. The steps below separate those two jobs and show how to check each one.
1. Get the stream URL and key from YouTube Studio
In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room and create or select the live stream. Copy the stream URL and stream key shown in its encoder settings. Use the address YouTube provides for that stream rather than assuming a fixed ingest hostname or path; the available address can depend on the stream configuration. YouTube’s encoder setup instructions explain where to find and use these values.
Treat the stream key like a password: anyone who obtains it may be able to send video to your channel. Do not paste it into a public script, a shared shell command, a ticket, or a screenshot. If it is exposed, reset it in Live Control Room and replace the value used by your service.
2. Prefer RTMPS and choose compatible encoding settings
YouTube recommends RTMPS, the encrypted form of RTMP. Copy the RTMPS URL provided in Live Control Room and verify its scheme and hostname when configuring FFmpeg. YouTube’s RTMPS guidance notes port 443 as an option when troubleshooting connection or SSL errors; use the address and port appropriate to the endpoint YouTube supplies, not an assumed replacement.

Choose output settings for your source, intended resolution and frame rate, and installed FFmpeg build. YouTube’s current live encoder settings list RTMP/RTMPS and H.264, H.265 (HEVC), and AV1 video, along with AAC or MP3 audio. The accepted combination on your system depends on the FFmpeg build and input format.

There is no one bitrate that suits every stream. YouTube’s encoder table is updated over time, so consult it before setting a production service rather than treating the examples above as universal values.
3. Test FFmpeg interactively before using systemd
First run FFmpeg from a shell where you can see its output. Replace the example input and values with your actual media, encoder settings, URL, and key. This illustrative H.264/AAC command re-encodes a file; it is not a tested universal command, and input formats or installed encoders may require changes.

Verify the source dimensions and frame rate: this command does not scale arbitrary input to 1080p. Set the bitrate, frame rate, and GOP to match the intended output, and consult the current YouTube encoder table for other combinations. Keep the full destination containing the key out of shell history and shared process listings where possible; a protected credential source is preferable for a persistent service.

If the source already has compatible codecs, stream copy may reduce CPU load, but it will not fix incompatible resolution, bitrate, keyframe interval, or audio. Re-encoding provides control over those output properties at the cost of CPU. Confirm that your installed FFmpeg supports the selected encoder and options.
Once FFmpeg reports that it is sending media, check the Live Control Room preview and stream-health messages. A successful local connection does not by itself prove that the stream is healthy or that the chosen settings are suitable.

4. Store the key securely for the service
A systemd unit should run as a dedicated unprivileged account, use explicit paths, and obtain the key from a file or credential mechanism readable only by the service. Avoid putting the key directly in the unit’s ExecStart: unit definitions can be readable to other local users, and command arguments may be visible through process inspection. Also avoid enabling shell tracing or logging an expanded destination URL.
The following is a unit-file outline, not a verified configuration for every Linux distribution or systemd version. Confirm directive availability and syntax against the documentation installed on your target system. It expects a root-owned credential file at /etc/ffmpeg-youtube/stream-key, readable by the service account, and a wrapper script that reads the key without printing it.

WantedBy=multi-user.targetUse the actual FFmpeg binary location on your system; /usr/local/bin/youtube-stream above is a wrapper, not FFmpeg itself. Restrict access to the wrapper and credential directory. For example, a root-owned key file can be mode 600 if your chosen service design securely makes it available to the service account; otherwise use the credential facility supported by your installed systemd version and configure its permissions accordingly. Do not make the key world-readable merely to make the unit work.

The wrapper should construct the destination only in memory, execute FFmpeg with the intended arguments, and avoid printing the secret. Validate that its quoting handles special characters in the key. A service manager’s journal may capture FFmpeg output, so check that the tool does not emit a full destination URL containing the key before relying on persistent logs.

After saving the unit under the appropriate system unit directory for your distribution, reload the manager, enable the service for boot, and start it. These common commands apply to systemd-based distributions; check local documentation if paths, permissions, or service-management conventions differ.

sudo journalctl -u ffmpeg-youtube.service -fCheck the local process with systemctl status and inspect recent output in the journal. Separately, confirm that YouTube receives the stream, displays the expected preview, and reports healthy video and audio in Live Control Room. YouTube recommends a representative preflight test, a network speed test, and monitoring stream health while live.

- systemd status answers whether the service process is running or has failed.
- Live Control Room answers whether YouTube is ingesting and assessing the stream as expected.
- A restart policy can launch FFmpeg again after a process failure; it does not promise seamless playback, preserve a particular YouTube live event, or override platform-side limits.
6. Troubleshoot common failures
RTMPS timeout or SSL error
Re-copy the URL from the current Live Control Room settings and check the rtmps:// scheme, hostname, and port. If the endpoint permits it, try the port 443 option noted in YouTube’s RTMPS troubleshooting guidance. Check outbound firewall rules and network access as well; do not switch to a guessed endpoint.
YouTube rejects the stream or reports poor health
Read the Live Control Room health message, then check that the output codec, audio codec, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, and keyframe interval match the current encoder guidance. Confirm that the upload connection can sustain the stream bitrate and run a representative test with real motion and audio. A nominally successful FFmpeg connection is not proof of adequate network headroom or healthy media.
The service starts but FFmpeg exits
Inspect systemctl status and the unit journal for an invalid path, missing input, unsupported encoder, permissions problem, or malformed arguments. Run the same non-secret command interactively first. Confirm the service account can read the media and wrapper, and that its credential setup exposes the key without making it publicly readable.
The key may have leaked
Reset the stream key in Live Control Room, update the protected credential source, then restart the service. Review whether logs or scripts contain the old destination and restrict or remove exposed copies.

Local restart behavior and YouTube’s event behavior are separate. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived after the encoder stops sending content. A restarted process should not be assumed to restore the same event or bypass platform-side limits; check the current Live Control Room status and start or configure a stream as appropriate.
