For a self-managed server in India, Google Compute Engine (GCE) in Mumbai or Delhi and Amazon Lightsail in Mumbai are defensible starting candidates—not proven winners for every fireplace stream. Choose only after fixing your resolution, codec and bitrate, calculating continuous outbound data, checking the current regional price and transfer terms, and testing the actual encoder or relay workload. Neither a provider’s India region nor its plan description guarantees uninterrupted streaming.
If you would rather avoid running a server and encoder yourself, StreamNeo is the first option to consider for a prerecorded YouTube loop: it runs from the cloud, accepts uploads at any quality up to 4K 60fps for one flat price per slot, and gives the first day free. It is not a general-purpose India-region server and does not stream from a camera.
Which India-region options are worth comparing?
GCE documents Compute Engine zones in Mumbai (asia-south1) and Delhi (asia-south2), with regional VM pricing. Lightsail offers bundled VPS plans in Mumbai. These are candidates to evaluate, not a finding that one costs less or performs better for this particular stream.
| Factor | Google Compute Engine | Amazon Lightsail |
|---|---|---|
| India locations evidenced | Mumbai and Delhi zones, per Google Cloud’s regions and zones documentation. | Mumbai regional plans, per AWS Lightsail pricing information. |
| Service shape | Configurable VM families and sizes; check the selected machine and zone’s current price. | Fixed bundles combining compute, memory, SSD storage and a transfer allowance, as described in AWS Lightsail features. |
| Transfer concern | Check current network pricing and estimate egress for your workload; a specific stream bill is not established by the available provider information. | AWS says Mumbai plans include half the data-transfer allowance shown for most regions. Excess outbound transfer may be chargeable; verify the current bundle terms. |
| Compute consideration | Choose a family and size after measuring the actual encoder workload; no fireplace-stream benchmark establishes a suitable size. | AWS describes compute-optimized plans as useful for compute-intensive encoding and directs users needing consistently high CPU performance to EC2. See Lightsail features. |
These sources do not establish comparative uptime, latency to YouTube ingest, or performance under a continuous fireplace broadcast. Treat provider choice as a workload and cost decision, then test before relying on the stream.

Decide what the server will actually do
Server sizing depends first on the architecture. A VM encoding video continuously needs CPU capacity appropriate to the chosen codec, resolution and frame rate. A VM that only relays an already-prepared stream may have a different compute profile, though network egress still matters. Do not select a VM size from the provider name alone.
- Choose the target resolution, frame rate, codec and bitrate before comparing plans.
- Determine whether the VM will encode, relay a prepared source, or perform both jobs.
- Estimate continuous outbound data from the actual bitrate and hours streamed, then check how the provider counts billable egress and what the selected plan includes.
- Check current machine availability, regional price, taxes and transfer terms in the account and region you intend to use; prices and terms can change.
Set the YouTube encoder for a continuous stream
YouTube’s encoder guidance recommends RTMPS, a secure extension to RTMP. For H.264 at 1080p and 30 fps, YouTube lists a recommended bitrate range of 5–14 Mbps. That is platform guidance, not a guarantee that a particular VM can encode at the chosen setting.

- Protocol: Use RTMPS where your encoder supports it.
- Rate control: Set constant bitrate (CBR), as YouTube recommends.
- Keyframes: Set a two-second interval; YouTube says not to exceed four seconds.
- Bitrate: Use the recommendation for the selected codec, resolution and frame rate. The 5–14 Mbps range applies specifically to H.264 at 1080p/30 fps.
- Network headroom: YouTube recommends 20% upload headroom. Plan network capacity above the configured stream bitrate rather than matching it exactly.
Read YouTube’s current encoder settings by codec and resolution in Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions, and its network guidance in How much upload bandwidth do I need for a YouTube live stream?.
Deploy and validate before leaving it unattended
- Provision the VM in the intended region. In GCE, choose a zone in Mumbai or Delhi and a machine configuration suited to the planned work. In Lightsail, compare the Mumbai bundle’s included transfer with your estimated outbound use.
- Prepare the source and encoder. Confirm whether video is being encoded on the VM or relayed from a prepared source. Apply the appropriate YouTube settings and verify audio and picture in a private or otherwise controlled test before making a long broadcast.
- Connect using the stream key. Enter the key in the encoder’s YouTube destination settings and keep it secret. YouTube describes stream keys as like the stream’s password and address; reset the key if it is exposed. See YouTube’s stream key guidance.
- Run a sustained test. Check encoder CPU use, network stability, stream health and reconnect behavior under the intended settings. No published benchmark here establishes the performance of a particular plan for this workload.
- Set monitoring and recovery. Arrange alerts and a restart or reconnect procedure for encoder failure, VM interruption or a dropped YouTube connection. YouTube warns that a connectivity disruption can break a live stream; do not assume automatic recovery without testing your own setup.
- Check archive expectations. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not treat that rule as a guarantee that a continuous broadcast longer than 12 hours will become one archive; confirm the current YouTube workflow for longer streams.
Estimate the continuous data and operating cost
A 24/7 stream sends data continuously, so even a modest bitrate can make transfer allowance a decisive factor. As a planning estimate, multiply the stream bitrate by operating time to estimate outbound volume; use the bitrate actually configured and account for protocol overhead. Compare that estimate with the selected plan’s allowance and current outbound-transfer charges. Lightsail’s Mumbai allowance is half the amount shown for most regions, so do not apply another region’s allowance to a Mumbai plan. For GCE, check the selected VM’s current network pricing. The available information does not establish a workload-specific monthly bill for either provider.

Common failure points and what to check
- Stream repeatedly disconnects: Check available upload capacity against the configured bitrate plus YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom, then inspect network stability and reconnect behavior.
- Encoder overloads or drops frames: Measure CPU use at the intended codec, resolution and frame rate. If the VM is encoding, test a more suitable machine configuration rather than assuming a bundle can sustain the workload.
- Transfer costs or allowance are higher than expected: Recalculate from the sustained bitrate and verify the region-specific allowance and billing rules. Pay particular attention to Lightsail Mumbai’s reduced allowance relative to most regions.
- YouTube will not accept the stream: Recheck the selected ingest protocol, encoder settings and stream key. Treat the key as a credential and replace it if compromised.
- A long broadcast has no single expected archive: YouTube’s automatic archive statement applies to streams under 12 hours; verify the current handling of longer broadcasts rather than relying on one continuous archive.
Or let it run in the cloud
For a prerecorded fireplace video or playlist, StreamNeo is a simpler alternative to maintaining a VM and encoder: upload the video, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops the uploaded material from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. It streams the upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot; it also attempts automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. You can review the service at StreamNeo; the monthly option is $9.99 per month. UPI and cards are available in India, and card checkout is available worldwide. StreamNeo is for uploaded videos and YouTube streams, not camera broadcasts. Start the free day on StreamNeo.
