Your channel must qualify for the YouTube Partner Program (YPP), pass YouTube’s channel-level policy review, have the necessary rights to everything in the stream, and meet the requirements for each monetization feature you use. YouTube’s published guidance does not categorically approve or prohibit every continuous loop of a creator’s own videos.
What decides whether the stream can be monetized?
There are several separate tests, and passing one does not settle the others:
- YPP eligibility: Your channel must meet the applicable entry requirements and be accepted into the program.
- Originality and authenticity: YouTube reviews the channel as a whole. A continuous replay can raise questions if the channel appears repetitive, generic, or mass-produced, even when you own the source recordings.
- Rights: You need the rights required to livestream and monetize every element, including music and other third-party material embedded in your videos.
- Feature and ad conditions: Ads, memberships, Super Chat, Super Stickers, and other features have their own eligibility or module requirements. Ads are not guaranteed to serve, and YPP acceptance does not guarantee earnings.
YouTube’s channel monetization policy says, “Our reviewers will check your channel and content against our policies.” The policy covers live streams as well as other formats. YouTube’s July 15, 2025 policy note clarified that repetitive or mass-produced content falls under “inauthentic content”; it said the reused-content policy did not change. Reused content concerns repurposing material from YouTube or another source without significant original commentary, substantive modifications, or educational or entertainment value. That is distinct from copyright permission.
For a documentary channel, a stream that simply replays the same footage indefinitely may look different in a channel review from a carefully curated broadcast with meaningful context, varied programming, or a clear editorial purpose. That is a practical consideration, not a guarantee of a particular review outcome. YouTube’s general guidance does not specify a special pass-or-fail rule for every 24/7 creator-owned stream.

YPP eligibility and whether live watch hours count
YouTube’s current YPP help page lists baseline requirements that include complying with monetization policies, living in a country or region where YPP is available, having no active Community Guidelines strikes, turning on 2-Step Verification, having access to advanced features, and linking or being ready to set up an AdSense for YouTube account. For the higher ad-revenue eligibility threshold, the page lists:
- 1,000 subscribers and 4,000 qualified public watch hours in the last 12 months; or
- 1,000 subscribers and 10 million qualified public Shorts views in the last 90 days.
Shorts Feed watch time does not count toward the 4,000-hour threshold. Livestream watch hours can count toward the public-watch-hour route when the stream is public and is not deleted or left unconverted to VOD. Unlisted or deleted livestreams, and livestreams not converted to VOD, do not count as qualified public watch hours. Meeting a threshold only makes the channel eligible for review; it does not guarantee acceptance into YPP.
How a monetized livestream can earn
Watch Page ads and YouTube Premium
Eligible live streams can earn from advertising, but YouTube says ad slots are not guaranteed to serve. When monetization is enabled, pre-roll and display ads are automatically on; mid-roll ads can be set to run automatically or manually. An automatically starting embedded stream on an external site has ads turned off, according to YouTube’s live monetization guidance.

For ad and YouTube Premium revenue on long-form or live videos viewed on the Watch Page, a creator must accept the Watch Page Monetization Module. YouTube’s partner earnings overview says a partner who accepts Watch Page Ads receives 55% of net revenues from ads displayed or streamed on public videos on the content Watch Page. That is a revenue-share term, not an estimate of what a particular 24/7 stream will earn. YouTube does not guarantee how much—or whether—a creator will be paid.

Memberships, Super Chat, and Super Stickers
YouTube lists channel memberships, Super Chat, and Super Stickers among live-stream monetization options for eligible creators. Access depends on the relevant feature requirements and, where applicable, accepting the Commerce Product Module. YouTube’s earnings overview lists 70% of net revenues for certain fan-funding features under that module; it is not a general livestream revenue rate. Check the current feature eligibility and module terms before relying on any of these options.

Shopping and brand partnerships
YouTube Shopping may let eligible YPP creators feature their own products or products from other brands, subject to current eligibility and terms. Tag products only when they genuinely fit the documentary or the audience. YouTube also describes brand partnerships as a possible creator revenue path, but arrangements depend on the creator and brand; they are not guaranteed platform income.
Check rights in every part of the recording
Owning the camera footage does not necessarily mean you own or have monetization rights to the whole finished video. Before putting a recording into a continuous live stream, check the permissions for:

- Music, including background tracks, theme music, and performances.
- Archival footage, photographs, illustrations, and clips from other creators or broadcasters.
- Voice, performance, or other licensed material included in the edit.
- Any license terms that limit live transmission, commercial use, territory, duration, or platform.
YouTube’s livestream terms require the provider to have the rights needed to exploit the live content, including relevant music licensing rights, and to comply with applicable law and Community Guidelines. A license to use an asset in an uploaded video may not necessarily cover continuous livestreaming or monetization. Resolve that scope with the rights holder or license terms rather than assuming that a previously published video is cleared for every use.

Practical checks before you run the loop
- Confirm channel eligibility. Review the current YPP requirements and feature availability for your region, then check the channel’s status in YouTube Studio.
- Audit the programming. Consider whether the stream adds a coherent viewing experience rather than repeatedly presenting identical material without context. Review the channel’s theme, newest and most-viewed videos, watch-time distribution, metadata, and About section: YouTube says reviewers may consider these channel-wide signals.
- Clear every asset. Verify livestream and monetization rights for music, archival content, images, and any other third-party material in every video in the rotation.
- Set the archive outcome deliberately. If you want eligible livestream hours to count toward the public-watch-hour threshold, keep the stream public and ensure it is converted to VOD rather than deleted or left unconverted.
- Check monetization modules. For Watch Page ads and YouTube Premium revenue, accept the Watch Page Monetization Module. For eligible fan-funding features, review and accept the relevant Commerce Product Module terms.
- Set realistic revenue expectations. A long-running stream can accumulate viewing time, but that does not establish YPP acceptance, guarantee ad delivery, or predict earnings.
Keep the stream running: DIY or cloud
YouTube supports live streaming with an encoder, but its guidance does not establish that dedicated hardware is required. If you manage the stream yourself, use a compatible encoder and follow the setup instructions for that encoder and YouTube’s live control room. You remain responsible for the computer, internet connection, playlist or media playback, stream key, and recovery if the stream stops. Keep the stream key private; anyone with access to it may be able to broadcast to your channel.

Common reasons monetization or watch hours may not work as expected
- The channel meets the numbers but is not accepted. Thresholds trigger a channel review; they do not override monetization policies or guarantee YPP acceptance.
- Live hours do not appear in the public-watch-hour total. Check that the stream was public and converted to VOD, and that it was not deleted or left unconverted.
- The video is yours, but the stream faces a rights issue. Recheck music and other embedded material. Visual ownership does not clear third-party assets for live use or monetization.
- The stream runs, but ads do not appear consistently. Ad slots are not guaranteed to serve. Confirm that the appropriate monetization settings and Watch Page module are in place, but do not treat configuration as a promise of ad delivery.
- A continuous replay raises originality concerns. YouTube’s channel review can consider repetition and channel-wide signals. Ownership alone does not establish that the channel meets the originality and authenticity policies.
- An embedded stream does not show ads. YouTube says ads are turned off for automatically starting embedded live streams on external sites.
