Raspberry Pi FFmpeg Settings for Continuous YouTube Streaming

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a Raspberry Pi 4, a practical starting point is H.264 hardware encoding at 1080p30, YouTube’s two-second keyframe interval, constant bitrate (CBR), and RTMPS. YouTube lists 14 Mbps as its recommended H.264 video bitrate for 1080p30 (5 Mbps minimum). These are targets, not a guarantee that a particular Pi, input source, or internet connection will sustain a live stream indefinitely.

Recommended starting settings

Use the settings below as a template for a Pi 4 Model B and a compatible FFmpeg build. Confirm that the encoder and its options are available on your actual operating system and board before building a long-running service.

Setting Starting point Notes
Video codec H.264 On Pi 4, Raspberry Pi documents the hardware encoder path as h264_v4l2m2m. Its availability depends on the installed OS, driver, and FFmpeg build.
Resolution and frame rate 1920Ă—1080, progressive, 30 fps Pi 4 Model B is specified for H.264 1080p30 encoding. Match the input where possible rather than needlessly scaling or changing frame rate.
Video rate control CBR YouTube recommends constant bitrate. Hardware encoder controls vary, so verify the accepted options and observed output locally.
Video bitrate 14 Mbps recommended for 1080p30; 5 Mbps minimum These are YouTube’s published H.264 live-ingest figures, not a promise of picture quality or network stability.
Keyframe interval 2 seconds At 30 fps, that is a GOP of 60 frames. YouTube says not to exceed 4 seconds.
Audio AAC, stereo, 128 Kbps YouTube lists 128 Kbps for stereo audio. Ensure the chosen audio input actually exists and is selected.
Transport and output RTMPS with FLV output Use the RTMPS ingest URL and stream key shown in YouTube Live Control Room. Prefer RTMPS when supported.

Check the Pi generation and encoder first

Raspberry Pi 4

Raspberry Pi’s Pi 4 Model B specifications list H.264 1080p30 encoding, Gigabit Ethernet, and a USB-C power input requiring a minimum 3A supply. Raspberry Pi identifies h264_v4l2m2m as the Pi 4 hardware H.264 encoder exposed through the V4L2 memory-to-memory interface. The fixed-function encoder has no user-configurable presets. That establishes a plausible hardware path, but not that every current software image exposes it or accepts the same rate-control flags.

Raspberry Pi 5

Raspberry Pi’s camera documentation describes H.264 and MJPEG encoding on Pi 5 as software-based through FFmpeg libraries, unlike the dedicated encoding hardware on Pi 4 and earlier devices. Do not copy a Pi 4 command using h264_v4l2m2m and assume it applies. The camera documentation says Pi 5’s --low-latency option can deliver encoded frames sooner at some cost to coding efficiency and potentially maximum frame rate; its stated 1080p30 result applies to that camera-software context, not every FFmpeg input or streaming setup.

Inspect the local FFmpeg build

  1. Check available encoders with ffmpeg -encoders. Look for h264_v4l2m2m on a Pi 4 if you intend to use its hardware path.
  2. Inspect the encoder’s help output, for example ffmpeg -h encoder=h264_v4l2m2m. Use only options supported by that build and driver.
  3. Test with the real input and observe CPU load, dropped frames, audio synchronization, and YouTube stream health before relying on it continuously.

Choose 1080p30 or 720p30

YouTube’s H.264 live-encoder table gives these bitrate targets:

Output YouTube minimum video bitrate YouTube recommended video bitrate
1080p30 5 Mbps 14 Mbps
720p30 3 Mbps 8 Mbps

If the source, Pi, or upload connection is constrained, 720p30 is a reasonable lower-bandwidth test choice. For 1080p30, a 5–8 Mbps trial range is below YouTube’s 14 Mbps recommendation; treat it as a practical experiment, not YouTube’s recommended range. Check the resulting image and stream-health indicators rather than assuming a lower bitrate will be stable. Test available upload capacity under conditions representative of the intended stream.

Build the FFmpeg command around your actual input

There is no universally correct command without knowing the Pi model, camera or other source, input dimensions and frame rate, audio device, OS, FFmpeg build, and upload capacity. Raspberry Pi’s published h264_v4l2m2m example writes a file; it is useful evidence for the encoder name, not a ready-made YouTube command. Hardware encoder option names and rate-control behavior can differ by driver and build.

Configure the equivalent of these output choices in the command you create: H.264 through the locally available encoder; 1920×1080 at 30 progressive frames per second if the source and device can sustain it; CBR at the bitrate selected for your test; a 60-frame GOP at 30 fps; AAC stereo at 128 Kbps when stereo audio is present; and FLV output to the RTMPS destination. Do not assume that a generic -b:v option alone produces true CBR on every hardware encoder. Verify the encoder’s help and inspect actual stream behavior.

Retrieve the ingest address and stream key from YouTube Live Control Room, then use them as the RTMPS output destination. The values are specific to your channel or stream setup. Keep the key private: anyone who obtains it may be able to send video to that destination. Never put a real key in a public script, screenshot, or example.

Set up YouTube Live and test before leaving it running

  1. In YouTube Live Control Room, create or select the live stream and copy its ingest URL and stream key. Use RTMPS if your FFmpeg output supports it.
  2. Prepare an input that represents the real stream: include typical motion, scene changes, and the audio you intend to broadcast. A static test image alone will not expose every encoding or synchronization issue.
  3. Start the FFmpeg stream and watch YouTube’s stream-health indicators. Confirm that video and audio arrive, the selected resolution and frame rate are correct, and the connection is not repeatedly dropping.
  4. Test the network’s sustained upload capacity while the stream is running. Leave headroom rather than treating a speed-test result or the encoder’s target bitrate as proof of a stable connection.
  5. Run a representative-duration test and check for overheating-related performance changes, dropped frames, audio drift, power interruptions, and network instability. Encoder flags alone cannot establish uninterrupted operation over an unspecified runtime.

Keep the stream compliant and maintainable

  • Only stream video and audio you have the rights or permissions to use. YouTube may interrupt or restrict a live stream when it detects copyrighted material; a video being available online does not establish permission to rebroadcast it.
  • Repeatedly looping prerecorded material does not itself establish that a channel meets YouTube’s monetization or reused-content requirements. Review YouTube’s current policies in the account and help resources before building a channel around loops.
  • Protect the stream key as a credential. If it is exposed, replace or reset it through the relevant YouTube controls and update the encoder configuration.
  • Use reliable power and a wired Ethernet connection where practical. The Pi 4’s Gigabit Ethernet capability does not guarantee adequate upstream service from the ISP or local network.

Troubleshooting common failures

Symptom Likely cause What to check
FFmpeg reports an unknown encoder The installed build does not include that encoder, or the board/software path differs. Run ffmpeg -encoders; confirm the board generation, OS, driver, and installed FFmpeg build. Do not assume Pi 5 has the Pi 4 hardware encoder.
Encoder rejects an option or ignores rate control Encoder flags differ by driver and FFmpeg build. Inspect ffmpeg -h encoder=... for the selected encoder; use supported options and verify the resulting stream rather than relying on generic flags.
YouTube reports unstable or insufficient bitrate Upload capacity may be insufficient or variable; the configured bitrate may not match the available connection. Test sustained upload under stream load, review YouTube stream health, and trial a lower output such as 720p30 using YouTube’s published bitrate figures as reference.
Video is delayed, choppy, or dropping frames The source, encoding path, scaling, frame rate, CPU load, or network may be unable to sustain the chosen output. Check whether capture and encode can maintain the target frame rate; reduce resolution or frame rate for a controlled test and monitor the stream-health readout.
No audio or audio is out of sync The selected audio device or input may be wrong, absent, or operating at an unexpected rate. Confirm the actual audio input and channel layout, test AAC output with representative sound, and listen to the received YouTube stream.
Stream will not connect Wrong ingest URL or key, unsupported transport, or connectivity issue. Copy the current URL and key from Live Control Room, confirm RTMPS support in the output setup, and check outbound network access. Keep the key private.
