How to Keep a YouTube Live Stream Active Between Playlist Videos

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To keep a YouTube live stream active between prerecorded videos, send YouTube one continuous feed from an encoder. Put the videos, transitions and any holding content in the encoder’s output sequence; do not rely on YouTube’s playlist Loop button, which repeats a viewer’s playlist rather than creating a live broadcast.

Why a stream can stop between videos

YouTube receives a live feed from an encoder connected to the Live Control Room. If that encoder stops sending its output when one file ends, YouTube is no longer receiving the continuous program you intended. The solution is to keep the encoder’s output running while it moves from one video to the next. YouTube’s encoder setup guide explains how to connect that feed.

Which playlist do you mean?

  • YouTube viewer playlist: The player’s Loop control repeats an ordinary playlist for playback by a viewer. It does not schedule videos as a live stream. See YouTube’s playlist looping instructions.
  • Encoder sequence: The encoder plays or produces your chosen videos and sends their combined output to YouTube using the stream URL and key. Set up the sequence in the encoder or production system, not in a viewer playlist.
  • Auto-start and auto-stop: These are controls for starting or stopping a YouTube stream; they do not insert content between files. See YouTube’s live stream settings guide.

Set up one continuous prerecorded-video feed

  1. Confirm live streaming is enabled. In YouTube Studio, open Create → Go Live and create or schedule an encoder stream. YouTube says enabling live streaming for the first time can take up to 24 hours, so do not leave activation until the broadcast is due. See encoder setup and live streaming tips.
  2. Choose an encoder that can run your sequence. Check that it supports the file sequencing, transitions, repeat behavior and unattended operation you need. Those controls vary by encoder; YouTube’s general setup instructions do not establish specific playlist or gapless-transition settings for individual products. YouTube lists verified encoder options, including the optional hardware product LiveU Solo, but says listed encoders are not made by YouTube. Confirm a device’s current support and suitability with its maker before choosing it.
  3. Copy the stream connection details from YouTube. In the Live Control Room, copy the server URL and stream key into the encoder’s corresponding fields. Treat the key as a password: YouTube describes stream keys as “like your stream’s password and address.” Do not publish it or share it with people who should not control your broadcast. See manage live stream settings.
  4. Build the outgoing sequence. Add the prerecorded videos in order and configure the encoder to keep sending its program output as it advances between them. If a clip boundary creates a gap, use an encoder scene, slate, holding image, black screen or suitable audio bed so the feed continues instead of stopping. YouTube’s general guide explains the encoder-feed workflow but does not prescribe a universal transition setting.
  5. Run a full test before relying on it unattended. Start the encoder, inspect the Live Control Room preview, and check the channel or watch-page playback on both desktop and mobile. Watch stream health and listen for missing or cut-off audio through the transitions. YouTube recommends setting up at least two hours before a live event and starting the encoder 15 minutes before its scheduled time. See live streaming tips and encoder settings.
  6. Allow network headroom and use supported settings. YouTube recommends upload bandwidth with 20% headroom. Its encoder guidance recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds. These are YouTube’s operational recommendations, not a guarantee that an unstable connection will stay up. See streaming tips and encoder settings.

Plan the archive and replay experience

YouTube’s encoder setup guide says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. For streams longer than 12 hours, DVR may be limited or unavailable, according to YouTube’s DVR help. If viewers need to rewind during the broadcast, account for that limitation when deciding how long to run a single stream.

Troubleshoot gaps, interruptions and missing playback

  • The broadcast ends at a file boundary: The encoder may be stopping its output when the clip ends. Configure it to continue the program sequence, with a transition or holding scene where needed; test that boundary before going live.
  • The next video never starts: Check the encoder’s sequence and repeat settings, then confirm that the file can be read and played in the selected workflow. Exact controls and supported formats depend on the encoder.
  • The preview is black or has no audio: Check the outgoing scene and media source in the encoder, then inspect the Live Control Room preview before asking viewers to rely on the stream.
  • The stream health deteriorates or the feed disconnects: Check the upload connection and available headroom against YouTube’s 20% recommendation. Review the encoder’s status and YouTube’s streaming tips; bandwidth headroom cannot compensate for every unstable network.
  • You cannot start a first stream: If live streaming was only just enabled, allow up to 24 hours for first-time activation, as described in YouTube’s encoder setup guide.

Or let it run in the cloud

StreamNeo keeps a YouTube channel live from uploaded videos, without a home computer or connection having to stay on. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops the uploaded videos from the cloud; it does not broadcast a camera feed.
